Paul's Partner

At the Sunflower games in Topeka, the directors were experimenting with a new doubles format. Before this day, the participants were allowed to choose their partners, and the event coordinators placed them with the appropriate classifications. Somehow, I showed up, needing a partner, because I hadn't planned on being in the doubles competition. Paul Voelker, who I had always admired from afar from his days as the president of the Kansas Horseshoe Pitchers' Assn., asked me to be his partner for the event. Of course, how could I decline a sweet deal like that? I hadn't reached my glory days when I would make the state's highest quality men's class ten times in a row. I was just your average Joe, having a little fun on a warm summer's day. Paul, on the other hand, was a seasoned professional. Bottom line was, we romped right through the competition for first place. It was a pleasure having Paul as my unexpected partner. R.I.P. Paul. My condolences to his family and friends.
