Obituary for Velma L Knowles ( )

Velma Lorene Knowles, 93, of Atchison, KS, passed away, Saturday, August 16, 2014 at Atchison Senior Village.
Funeral services will be held at 6:00 pm on Tuesday, August 19th, 2014 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, KS, with Rev. Ben Ockree officiating. Burial will follow at the Family Cemetery, Atchison, KS. Family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to Family Cemetery and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Online condolences may be left at www.beckerdyer.com.
Velma was born January 2, 1921, in Atchison, KS, the daughter of J. Ross and Lorene Maude (Case) Knowles. She graduated from Atchison High School in 1938; she attended St. Joseph Missouri Junior College and Emporia State Teachers College before graduating from Kansas University with a Degree in Art Education in 1942. She taught art in the Atchison Jr. & Sr. High Schools for 2 years, in Hays Kansas Elementary Schools for 2 years, and in Soldiers’ and Sailors Children’s Home in Knightstown, Indiana for 27 years. She also worked in an Army Supply Depot in San Bernardino, CA. for a year. While she was in Indiana she directed the children in painting a Mural in the Dentist area depicting the history of Dentistry. She retired in 1974 and moved back to Atchison, KS. Velma was a member of the First Christian Church, the Christian Women’s Fellowship, Atchison Garden Club where she served as treasurer and historian, the former Shepherd’s Center and Sr. Mary Faith’s Poetry Class. She attended various art instructions in retirement years including a water color class that took excursions. She enjoyed drawing and painting especially water color painting and writing prose and poetry. She particularly liked writing Haikus, gardening, health food, vitamins, herbs and minerals. She was a member of the Food COOP.
Survivors include a sister, Dorothy Thompson, Atchison, KS. three nephews, Alan (Cathy) Higley, Atchison, KS., Morris (Mary) Thompson, Leona, KS. and Leonard (Sylvia) Thompson, Denton, KS. a niece, Bonnie (Kent) Rosdahl, Topeka, KS. Her parents, and sister, Helen Higley, preceded her in death.
