Bertha W. (Huth) Maes, Atchison, KS, died July 12, 2011. For those who knew her they would say she died a 101 years “young.” She loved and cherished everyone who came into her life.

Bertha was born November 1, 1909 in Olpe, Kansas. She always enjoyed telling everyone she was born on All Saints Day. She was one of 4 children. She graduated from Emporia High School and Emporia Business College. She prided herself in her handwriting which was published in a penmanship magazine. Those who knew her could testify to this with the wonderful letters she was famous at penning.

She is survived by her daughter Sue Maes, Sue’s husband Dennis Hemmendinger, two grandchildren, Matt Hemmendinger and Claire Lindh, and Claire’s husband Aaron Lindh.

She married Jack Maes in 1934 and he preceded her in death. During the Depression both Jack and Bertha worked at the Fox (Granada) Theatre in Emporia, he as assistant manager and she as secretary/bookkeeper. She tells of falling in love when he asked to walk her home one evening after work. Their theatre career took them to Beatrice, NB, Marysville, KS, and Ottawa, KS where their daughter Sue was born. Their final career stop was Atchison, Kansas were Bertha lived for over 60 years.

Once her daughter reached school age Bertha returned to work and held three positions in Atchison; bookkeeper at Intfen Furniture Company, Deputy Registrar of Deeds, and secretary at Atchison Children’s Receiving Home. Serving as president of the local Zonta International club, St. Joseph School PTA, St. Joseph’s Church Altar Society, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Atchison Garden Club, she tirelessly gave her spirit to her community.

She was an avid bridge player and enjoyed calling to tell you when she took every trick at afternoon bridge club. Working in her yard and playing her organ were important parts of her life when she didn’t have an opportunity to be with her two grandchildren. Pitching baseballs and playing miniature golf were part of their younger days with Grandma Bertha. At 99 she amazed wedding guests when she enthusiastically engaged her son-in-law and grandson on the dance floor during her granddaughter’s wedding reception. And she loved to recount tales of her grandson on the campaign trail during the 2008 presidential election.

Relatives from across the country celebrated her 100th in grand fashion and she treasured each and every niece and nephew that shared her life.
