Jean Frances Hysten, 85, of Topeka, KS, formerly of Atchison, KS, passed away, Sunday, February 28, 2010 at her home in Topeka.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Atchison, KS. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 pm on Tuesday at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 PM, Saturday, March 6, 2010 the Colly Creek Congregation of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 4230 SW Gage Blvd, Topeka, KS. Jean Frances Boydston was born on September 27, 1924 in Holton, KS the daughter of Howard C. and Clara Lillian (May) Boydston. She attended grade school in Holton, junior high in Ozawkie, KS and Washburn University after she moved to Topeka. Jean had worked at Atchison Leather Products, Mt. St. Scholastica Dormitory and the former Atchison Hotel. She was a member of the Congregation of Jehovah’s Witness in Atchison and Topeka. Mrs. Hysten enjoyed sewing, raising chickens and flowers. She was an excellent cook who cherished time spent with her grandchildren.

Jean was married to Clem C. Hysten on Feb. 15, 1939 in Topeka, KS. Mr. Hysten preceded her in death on March 22, 1998. Her parents, son, Richard Hysten; daughter, Cynthia Hysten; brothers, Robert L. and Charles M. Hyman and sisters, Betty Nelson and Marian L. Morgan also preceded her in death.

Survivors include sons, Fred Hysten and John Hysten, both of Atchison, KS, Clifford Hysten, Kansas City, MO, Joseph Hysten, Topeka, KS, Lloyd Hysten, Lawrence, KS, and Patrick Hysten, Topeka, KS; daughters, Margaret Grier, Hiawatha, KS, Mary Rudy, Ozawkie, KS, Judy Billings, Topeka, KS, Valeri Hysten, Topeka, KS, Victoria Stone, Horton, KS, Rose Godfrey, Compton, CA, and Christine Hightower, Topeka, KS; sister, Charlotte K. Morgan, Chicago, IL, 44 grandchildren, more than 50 great-grandchildren and more than 10 great-great-grandchildren.

Opal Melba Davis, 97 years of age, of Atchison, KS died Friday, February 26, 2010 at the Atchison Senior Village.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, March 1, 2010 at the Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Robert Ziegler officiating. Burial will follow in the Sugar Creek Cemetery, Rushville, MO. Opal was born on Oct. 8, 1912 in Piermont, MO, the daughter of John C. and Wilhelmine “Minnie” (Koch) Witte. She attended Trinity Lutheran Grade School, Atchison, KS. She moved to East Atchison (Winthrop) from Stover, MO, resided there for 69 years. She moved to Texas for a short period and then back to Atchison, KS, in July 2009. Opal had worked at the Stein Laboratories, F.W. Woolworths as a clerk for many years and at the Saunders Mop Factory for 16 years, retiring in 1972. Opal was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, the Martha Circle, and Mission of Love, both of Trinity Lutheran, and enjoyed fishing, gardening, sewing and working with flowers.

She was married to Albert Marvin Davis on Aug. 26, 1933 at Trinity Lutheran Church. Mr. Davis preceded her in death on May 23, 1978. Survivors include a son; Ron (Midge) Davis, Friendswood, TX; a brother, Albert Witte, Rushville, MO; a sister, LaVerne Magers, Atchison, KS; three grandchildren, Ronell (Greg)Humble, League City, TX; Derek Davis, Friendswood, TX; and Sarah(James) Heinbaugh, Colorado Springs, CO; two step-grandchildren, Matthew Shook, Friendswood, TX and Marc Bigley, Friendswood, TX; and two great grandchildren, Lauren E.& Aaron Humble. Her parents, two brothers, Leonard and Edward Witte, and one sister, Leota Boatright preceded her in death.

Marilyn A. 'Sparkie' Scherer, 54, of Atchison, passed away, Sunday, February 21, 2010 at the Atchison Medicalodge with her loving family by her side.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, February 25, 2010 at St. Louis Church, Good Intent, with Fr. Benjamin Tremmel, OSB, officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. A parish rosary will be recited at 6:00 PM, Wednesday at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with visitation to follow until 8:00 PM. Sparkie was born January 2, 1956 in Atchison, KS, the daughter of Lawrence H. and Louise ‘Betty Lou’ (Gronniger) Scherer. She attended school at St. Louis Parish Hall and then graduated from ACCHS in 1974. Sparkie worked as a secretary for Gottschalk & Company for many years. She was a member of the St. Louis Church Altar Society and was a long time youth group leader. Sparkie cherished her many trips to Branson, MO. She enjoyed camping with her family, shopping, fishing and her dog, Hoss. Spark was a lover of nature, taking in creatures of all kinds. She especially enjoyed feeding and watching birds. Most of all, Sparkie cherished time spent with her family. She would make cakes for all occasions for her nieces and nephews, who she cared for deeply. Sparkie worked tirelessly, caring for her mother until she passed away in November, 2009.

Survivors include brothers, Henry (Bonnie), Jerome and Carl Scherer; sister, Rita (Chris) Jones, all of Atchison; nieces and nephews, Kristie Wessel, Mike Scherer, Teresa Hegarty, Brad, Brian and Bruce Spilman, Amy Seager, Cole Scherer, Corey, Derek and Tyler Jones and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

Sparkie was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Dorothy Spilman.

Phyllis LaVerne Lewis, 72, was called home to be with the Lord February 16th. She died of natural causes, at her home in Overland Park, KS and was found by her sister February 17th.

Services will be held Wednesday February 24th at 2:00 PM at the Effingham Union Church with burial in the Effingham Evergreen Cemetery. Phyllis will lie in state for one hour preceding the service where the family will receive visitors. She was also a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Overland Park where she sang in the choir.

Phyllis was born May 3, 1937 on the farm near Effingham, first daughter of Raymond and Mary Broyles. She grew up in Effingham and was a devoted servant of the Lord, mother, daughter, grandmother, sister and friend who remained very active even while devoting much time to caring for her mother in recent years.

Survivors are her mother Mary Sharp of the home, two sons, Kenneth (Barbara) Lewis of Michigan, David (Tamra) Lewis of California, and grandsons, Craig, Alexander, Kenneth, Corey and two great-grandchildren. She also leaves three sisters, Esther (Arthur) Figueroa of California, Linda (Calvin) Burch and Rosemary (Robert) Hiebsch of Kansas City, along with many nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends.

Joyce L. Haupt, 69, passed away, Tuesday, February 16, 2010 at the Liberty Terrace Nursing Home, Liberty, MO.

A Memorial Mass will be held 11:00 AM February 20, 2010 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Fr. Gerard Senecal, OSB, as celebrant. Burial of cremains will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. Joyce was born August 17, 1940 in Atchison, KS the daughter of William and Dorothy (Hampton) Navinskey. She graduated from Mt. Saint Scholastica in 1958 and began working for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. She was a trainer for SBC working her way up to supervisor before she retired. She enjoyed square dancing, dancercise, camping, and gardening. Joyce was a CCD instructor for many years and volunteered at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Pharr, TX and also for the Tip O Texas RV Park. She also enjoyed trips to South Padre Island and loved going to the casino.

She married Richard Haupt on August 26, 1958 at Sacred Heart. He preceded her in death on July 9, 2008. Survivors include three sons, Greg and Michelle Haupt, St. Joseph, MO; Leland Haupt, Gladstone, MO and LaMonte Haupt, Kansas City, MO; brother, Edward Navinskey, Cummings, KS; sisters, Frances Handke, Atchison; Carol Erpelding, Atchison; Virginia Schrick, Winchester, KS; and Janet Myers, Cummings, KS; 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a son, Darren LeRoy Haupt, brothers, Richard, Gerald, and William Navinskey and a sister, Dorothy Navinskey.

Artie Belle Benjamin, 84, of Kellogg, Idaho passed away February 16, 2010 at the Shoshone Medical Center of Kellogg, Idaho. She was born October 17, 1925 in Everest, Kansas; Artie was the daughter of Charles Calvin and Anna Irene (Eyer) Blankenship.

Artie attended and graduated from the Atchison County Community High School of Effingham, Kansas in 1943; she then attended college. Artie married John Benjamin on June 4, 1949 at Effingham, Kansas. They moved to the Silver Valley (Kellogg, Idaho) in 1955 from Kansas.

Artie taught in the Atchison County Community school district for seven years. She had also worked at the Kellogg Floral and Gift of Kellogg, Idaho for many years.

Artie was a member of the St. Rita’s Catholic Church of Kellogg, Idaho for fifty-five years; she was also a member of the Catholic Daughters and the Rosary Group. Artie loved and enjoyed bowling, fishing, gardening, crocheting and craft work.

Artie is survived by her beloved husband, John Benjamin of the family home of Kellogg, Idaho; two brothers, Charles Ernest Blankenship of Topeka, Kansas, Albert Leroy Blankenship of San Jose, California; three sister-in-laws, JoAnn Benjamin of San Bernardino, California, Frances Benjamin of Highland, California and Marge Blankenship of Topeka, Kansas; Artie is the proud Aunt of seventeen nieces and nephews, forty-nine great-nieces and nephews and fifty-seven great-great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother John Calvin Blankenship, one sister Helen Irene Busenbarrick; her brother and sister-in-laws Joseph and Elizabeth Platter and Richard and Rebecca Yeager; brother-in-laws Joseph Benjamin, Jerry Benjamin, and John Busenbarrick; sister-in-laws Jean Blankenship, JoAnn Blankenship and Wanda Maxine Blankenship; one niece and two great-nephews.

A Rosary service will be held on Friday, February 19, 2010 at 5:00 P.M. at the St. Rita’s Catholic Church of Kellogg, Idaho; a Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, February 20, 2010 at 11:00 A.M. at the St. Rita’s Catholic Church with Father Tom Loucks serving as Celebrant.

A funeral service will also be held in Effingham, Kansas at the St. Ann's Parish Hall on Saturday, February 27, 2010 at 10:30 A.M. with Father Ben Tremmel, OSB, officiating. Burial will be held at the St. Ann's Cemetery of Effingham. Family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 PM Friday February 26, 2010 at the Becker Chapel Effingham, KS.

The family suggests that memorials may be made to the Catholic Daughters of the St. Rita's Catholic Church of Kellogg, Idaho.

Harold E. Becker, 81, of Atchison, KS, formerly of Palmyra, MO, passed away on Wednesday, February 3, 2010 at his son’s home in Atchison.

Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM, Monday, February 8, 2010 at Zion Lutheran Church in Palmyra, with the Rev. David Johnson, officiating. Burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Palmyra. Harold was born on August 3, 1928 in Sweet Springs, MO, the son of Rev. A.J. and Bertha (Wiebusch) Becker. He attended schools in Sweet Springs, MO, Slater, MO, Concordia, MO and graduated from Palmyra High School in 1946. He went to work for the Robey-Robinson Lumber Yard in Palmyra prior to entering the military. He served overseas in the US Army Field Artillery during the Korean War from February 1951 until November 1952. When Harold returned from military duty, he again worked for the lumberyard until he began working for, and eventually managed, the Ben Franklin Store in Palmyra. He left there and worked as an Assistant Manager for the Quincy (IL) Farm and Home Supply for over 20 years.

In 1986, Harold and his wife, JoAnne, moved to Atchison and he worked with his sons at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. After Harold retired, they moved back to Palmyra in 1996 where he worked part-time for Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel. Harold and JoAnne have been living the past two years in Atchison with their son, Bryan.

Harold was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Boots-Dickson American Legion Post and the Norfolk-Smith VFW Post # 11041, all of Palmyra. He had been a former member of the Lutheran Laymen’s League at Zion and a bowling league secretary for over 10 years. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, growing tomatoes, watching the St. Louis Cardinals Baseball team and especially his grandchildren. Harold was looking forward to welcoming his first great-grandchild this coming May.

Harold was married to JoAnne Sutton on December 16, 1950 at Zion Lutheran Church. She survives of the home in Atchison. Additional survivors include three sons; David & Maureen Smallwood Becker, St. Louis, MO, Bryan & Pattie Becker, Atchison, KS, and Paul and Tonya Becker, Nortonville, KS; three sisters, Norma Schade, Palmyra, MO, Carolyn (Marvin) Myers, Hannibal, MO, and Emily Becker, Quincy, Il; six grandchildren, Christina (Aidan) Dunleavy, Omaha, NE, Tim (Sara) Becker, Effingham, KS, Matt (fiancé Shannon Johnson) Becker, Manhattan, KS, Andrew Becker, Nortonville, Rachel Allen and Kelly Carnal, both of St. Louis; two nieces, Joy (Rodney) Williams and Nancy (Jim) Schaefer, both of Palmyra; one nephew, Denny (Judy) Myers, Palmyra.

His parents, Rev. A.J. and Bertha Becker; an infant daughter, Beverly Becker; and a brother-in-law, Robert Schade, all preceded him in death.

Richard 'Dick' McCue, 68, of Atchison, passed away Thursday, February 04, 2010 at his son’s home.

Richard was born November 27, 1941 in Philadelphia, PA the son of John and Margaret (Thompson) McCue. He graduated from South Philadelphia High School and joined the United States Air Force. Dick was a work control technician in the Air Force. He had worked at Northwest Pipe as a Machine Operator, retiring in 2006. Dick was a member of the VFW and an extremely hard worker.

Survivors include three sons, Kevin, of Atchison, Ryan, of St. Joseph, MO, and Kelly of North Carolina.

Dick was preceded in death by his parents and 10 brothers and sisters.

Jerry Maurice Laflin, 77, Bendena, KS, passed away, Sunday, January 31, 2010 at the Heartland Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be 3:00 PM, Thursday, February 4, 2010 at the Atchison United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:00 PM Wednesday at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Jerry was born February 19, 1932 in Newton, IA, the son of the late Ray Delbert and Levena Minnesota (Cammack) Laflin. He graduated from High School in 1949 and then graduated from the University of Iowa in 1955 with a degree in Pharmacy. Jerry served in the US Air Force from 1955-1959 where he was stationed in Fairbanks, AK and Salina, KS. Mr. Laflin also worked for the Civil Service in Salina and Clovis, NM at the Cannon AFB. In 1975 he began working for the Department of the Army as a pharmacist at the Army Hospital in Ft. Riley, KS, until his retirement in 1998. Upon retirement, Jerry and Phyllis moved to Bendena, KS to be closer to family. He was a member of the Audubon Society where he went on many Christmas Bird Counts throughout the state of Kansas. Jerry was an avid Bible scholar who taught Sunday school for over 30 years and a bible study at Vintage Park for four years. He enjoyed his flower gardening, reading books, collecting stamps and playing tennis in his younger days. Most of all, Jerry enjoyed time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 54 years, Phyllis (Giles) Laflin. They were married on March 4, 1955 in Red Oak, IA. Additional survivors include sons, Michael Ray (Karen Sue) Laflin, Grayville, IL, Rea David (Karen Jo) Laflin, Atchison, KS; a daughter, Rachel Elizabeth (Vern) Miller, Thermopolis, WY, and seven grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by 3 brothers and 1 sister.

John W. "Billy" Wood, ,54, of Atchison, KS., died Sat. Jan. 30, 2010 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Kansas City, MO.

Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM on Wednesday, Feb. 3rd, 2010 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. The body will be cremated following the funeral service and burial of the cremated remains will be 11:00 AM on Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010 at Doniphan Cemetery. Billy was born on Dec. 5, 1955 in Atchison, KS., the son of John W. and Julia (Brookshire) Wood, Sr. He attended grade school at Independence Valley and graduated from Atchison High School. Mr. Wood attended the Ohio Art College. Upon moving home he worked as a farmer/stockman on the family farm. He also had worked at the former Rockwell International in the pattern shop, and had become proficient as a ‘gunsmith”. Mr. Wood enjoyed fishing, hunting, work on guns, and computers. He was also an accomplished artist, creating beautiful landscape oil paintings.

Survivors include an aunt; Francis Cripe, Blue Rapids, KS., a special best friend; Mike Catalanotto, Garfield, AR., and several cousins.

Carl E. Surritt , 90, Atchison, KS. died Sunday, Jan. 31st, 2010 at the Atchison Medicalodge.

Mr. Surritt will be cremated and a private family service will be held at a later date.The Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Carl was born on Jan. 17, 1920 in Atchison, KS. the son of Roy Grover and Mary (Smith) Surritt. He graduated from Atchison High School. Mr. Surritt owned and operated the former Surritt Garage in Atchison.

He was married to Velma Bidding on Oct. 1, 1940. Mrs Surritt preceded him in death on Aug 23, 1960. After Velma’s death, he relocated to California. There he married Maria Martin in l980. They later divorced. He relocated to St. Joseph, MO., and was employed by the St. Joseph Convention & Visitors Center.

Survivors include two sons; Carl (Carolyn) Surritt, Atchison, KS., and Thomas (Heidi) Surritt, St. Joseph, MO., a daughter; Donna Peak, Phoenix, AZ., a brother; Roy Surritt, Monrovia, KS., six grandchildren, four great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. His parents and three sisters also preceded him in death.

Esther M. Neill , 93, Cummings, KS, died Sat. Jan. 30th, 2010 at the Atchison Hospital.

Esther was born on March 16th, 1916 in Cummings, KS. the daughter of August and Anna (Wohlgemuth) Bodenhausen. She graduated from Camp Creek School District #28, and attended Atchison High School for one year. She had worked in the family home for 11 years, the Horton Garment Factory nine years, and the Atchison Hospital Laundry for 2 ½ years. Esther was a member of the Camp Creek United Methodist Church, where she was the Primary and Nursery Sunday School Teacher for many years. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, and church janitor for 8 years. Mrs. Neill enjoyed gardening, babysitting grandchildren, sewing, making quilts, gooseberry pies, and cookies for family and friends.

Esther married Curtis Neill on May 16th, 1942 in DeRidder, LA., Mr. Neill preceded her in death on Nov. 17, 2008. Her parents and four sisters; Ruth Graner, Edith Bodenhausen, Helen Neill and Alice Becker also preceded her in death. Survivors include two sons; Rev. Charlie (Barbara) Neill, Atchison, KS., Robert (Karen) Neill, Cummings, KS., two daughters; Shirley Neill, Atchison, KS., and Barbara (Cliff) Metcalfe, Cummings, KS., seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Conrad McConnaughey , 80, of Everest, passed away, Thursday, January 28, 2010 at his home.

Conrad was born July 25, 1929 in White Cloud, KS the son of James William and Mable Clair (Mershon) McConnaughey. He attended Atchison High School and then joined the Army. Conrad worked as a heavy equipment diesel mechanic for ASARCO in Tuscan, AR for 27years. He was a member of the First Christian Church and Lions Club in Everest, KS. Conrad enjoyed tinkering and puttering around the house. He was a handyman that could fix nearly anything in the house. Connie was also an avid reader of western novels.

He married Leila Behler on June 10, 1951 in Everest, KS, she survives of the home. She was a member of Faith Bible Fellowship, Winsomdozen Club and Priscilla Club. Ileta enjoyed playing cards, sewing and quilting, gardening and canning.

Ileta Mae Hadway married Jess Kuykendall March 31, 1950 in Summerfield, KS; he preceded her in death on January 7, 2002. Katherine E. McClenahan was born on Sept. 19th, 1921 in Topeka, KS. the daughter of Robert and Winnie (Schaefer) McClenahan. She had attended schools in Highland Park, KS, and Sterling College, Sterling, KS. Katherine was married to Charles D. Stinson on May 14, 1942 in Topeka, KS. She worked at the Santa Fe Railroad offices during World War II, taught piano and was a pre-school teacher for the YMCA, and para professional at Franklin School. Mrs. Stinson was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and played in the Bell Choir, and was a member of the Circle 5, of the church. She enjoyed raising flowers, doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and watching her children and grandchildren’s sporting activities.

Survivors include her husband; Charles D. Joan L. Stanton, 79, Atchison, passed away, Thursday, January 28, 2010 at the Atchison Senior Village.

Joan was born January 31, 1930 in Atchison, the daughter of the late Clarence and Cecil (Clements) Bigelow. She graduated from Atchison High School in 1947. She worked as a telephone operator from 1947-1948 and then attended nursing school at KU Medical Center. Joan was a Registered Nurse at the Atchison Hospital from 1951-1970 at which time, she also worked for the Bethany Hospital, Kansas City, and the Osawatomie Psychiatric Hospital. In 1972, Joan worked for the St. Luke’s Hospital in the Hemodialysis Unit. Joan was a member of the Atchison Hospital Auxiliary and Bellevue Country Club. She volunteered for Atchison’s Habitat for Humanity, enjoyed going to auctions, was an avid golfer and especially cherished time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In 1950 Joan married Jack Roth. They had two children together John (Eileen) Roth, Atchison, KS and Teri Field, England. She later married Speed Stanton in 1975 and they were divorced in 1995.

In addition to her children, she is survived by sisters, Sally Hayes, Atchison and Sandra Brown, Murphy, N.C.; grandchildren, Joe and Tiffany Gazarek, Savannah, MO and their daughter, Chloe; Megan Gazarek, Amazonia, MO and her children, Kalen, Isabella and Willow Russell; Katie Field, Savannah, MO; Jackie Carlton and her children, Chance, Crimson and Tessa; Calvin Roth and his daughter, Kassi; Kristie Roth and her son, Christopher, good friends, Mark and Janet Jackson, Weston, MO; Jean McKinney, who painted the portrait of Joan and many other close friends.

She was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Jocelyn Gazarek.

Joan was devoted in love, to her family and church.

She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, enjoyed sewing, baking and doing things for others.

James L. 'Jim' Hundley, 88, Cummings, KS, passed away, Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at his home with his loving family by his side.

Jim was born December 29, 1921 in Atchison, the son of the late Henry B. and Ruby M. (Tull) Hundley. He was a member of the U.S. Army Infantry serving during World War II. Jim had worked at Midwest Solvents for 31 years retiring has a supervisor. He was a life member of the VFW and a member of the American Legion. Jim enjoyed going to the casino, playing cards, farming, conservation, traveling and especially spending time with all of his grandchildren.

Jim married Virginia Dunn-Ball on April 17, 1946 in Troy, KS. She preceded him in death on November 18, 1993. Survivors include sons, Leonard (Barb) Hundley, Lancaster, KS, Phillip (Jody) Hundley, Cummings, KS; a daughter, Sharon (Dan) Schuetz, Cummings, KS; brothers, Charles Hundley, Highland, CA, and Harold Hundley, Kirbyville, MO; sisters, Dorothy Wilburn, Delia ‘Pete’ Burge and Bettie Jean Miner, all of Atchison; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Stephen had worked as a gas station attendant in Kansas City, MO, as a welder and electrician for Trail Mobile and most recently in the custodial maintenance department in the VA Hospital, Topeka, KS. He enjoyed watching television and various types of movies.

Survivors include a sister; Donnie Langston, OK, and several nieces and nephews, including Steve Kley who had been his caretaker for the past few years.

She was a cook for sixteen years at Valley Hope in Atchison and was a member of St. Benedicts Church and the VFW Auxiliary, Atchison, KS. Mrs. Perkins enjoyed gardening and cooking.

Marvin O. Mikkelson, 72, went to be with the Lord on January 1, 2010. He was surrounded by his loving family at Heartland Regional Medical Center as he lost his battle with cancer. He was born on March 1, 1937 in Ortley, South Dakota. Marvin was the son of Ole and Anna (Pederson) Mikkelson.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, January 9, 2010 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Atchison. Marvin was employed with Pillsbury in Minneapolis, Minnesota in the Research and Development department and transferred to open a new division for Pillsbury in Atchison, Kansas. He went to work for AnaCon Foods as the Director of Operations until his retirement. He was an active member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. He was an avid reader. He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren; golfing, bowling, hunting, fishing, bird-watching and all sports.

On June 7, 1958 he married Jeanette Dallager in Minneapolis, MN. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include two sons: Michael (Kathy) Mikkelson, Stilwell, KS, Mark (Debra) Mikkelson, Atchison, KS, one daughter, Kimberly (Wendall) Smith, Atchison, KS, a brother; David Mikkelson, Whitewood, SD, three sisters; Elvina Birney, Waubay, SD, Irene Bloom, Webster, SD and Ardys Becking, Webster, SD, and seven grandchildren. Robert was born March 19, 1939 in Wave Land, IN, the son of the late Russell Floyd and Esther (Hunt) Richardson. Red had worked as a Security Guard and drove the Athletics bus at Benedictine college until his retirement. He had also worked at Wal-Mart, as a bus driver for USD #409, for the city of Atchison and at the Youth Center. Red was an avid sports fan and was a Sprint race car driver earlier in life. He especially enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren.

Red married Bonnie Reese on October 29, 1964 in Atchison, she survives of the home. Additional survivors include sons; Mike and Danny Richardson, both of Atchison and Jeff Russell, St. Joseph, MO, a daughter; Patty and Shane Brewer, St. Joseph, MO, brother; Max Richardson, Crawfordsville, IN, sisters; Patty Stemick and Janet Peters, both of McAllen, TX, 9 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

JL was born on May 7, 1928 in Huntsville, Arkansas, the first born of thirteen children to James and Alice (Johnson) Bolinger. JL went to school in Huntsville, finishing 9 grades before leaving to help on the family farm. He served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954. JL and Lorraine Jones were married in Winchester, KS on October 1, 1955. Together they farmed in the Nortonville area.

JL loved other people and it was often said that he knew no stranger. JL was known as the “Mule Man” to many because his mule team and wagon, which he made, would attend parades and other public events. He also enjoyed welding.

Survivors include his wife, Lorraine of the home; son, Wayne of Lansing, KS; daughter, Annette Barnes of Eudora, KS; one brother, Charles of Valley, MO; six sisters, Maxine Beal and Lorene Bolinger of Wichita, KS, Lavera MacAfee and Vina Kidd of Huntsville, AR, Lucille Collins of Springdale, AR, and Polly Majors of Beaumont, TX; and four grandchildren.

JL is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Art and Joe; three sisters, Tiny Lawson, Norma Walden and Mary Tuttle.

Judy was born on September 17, 1939 in Atchison, KS the daughter of the late Max and Zilpha (Cummings) Ball. She graduated from Atchison High School and then received her teaching degree from Emporia State Teachers College. Judy was a member of the Pi Chapter of Sigma, Sigma, Sigma Sorority. She taught school for several years and then stayed home to raise her family. Judy was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, lifetime member of the Friends of the Library, on the Friends of the Library Board and was a member of the Bridge Club, playing in the Roundelay Bridge Tournaments. She enjoyed reading, puzzles, playing bridge and especially her grandchildren.

Judy was married to James L. Taylor on June 4, 1961 in Atchison, KS. Mr. Taylor survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son; Chris S. He was born in Pearl City, Hawaii on October 1, 1957 to Benjamin and Barbara (Benton) Brown. He was united in marriage to Sandi Stynski on December 28, 1984 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Richard served with the U. S. Marines and U.S. Army. Rick had worked for the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Leavenworth for a number of years before moving to Florence, CO in 1993 to work at the prison there, retiring in 2008. Richard is survived by his wife, Sandi of Florence; daughter, Rachel Brown; mother, Barbara; siblings, Dan (Joyce) Brown, Judy (Wes) Lentz, Jane (Dwaine) Klingman, Paul (Sherry) Brown, and Beth (Rob) Stone; father-in-law, Norbert Stynski; sister-in-law, Suzie (Charles) Reilly; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father; brother, Audie; and mother-in-law, Patricia Stynski.

Marian C. Gilliland, 92, passed away Monday, December 14, 2009 at her home in Atchison.

Funeral Services will be 12:00 noon, Friday, December 18, 2009 at the First Christian Church in Atchison with the Rev. Lee Hendon, officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Marian was born October 29, 1917 in Atchison, KS. Her adoptive parents were Andrew L. and Philippine Willimena (Dilgert) Kurtz. Marian graduated from Atchison High School in 1936 and had worked part-time at J.C. Penney’s and Sears, both of Atchison. Marian was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who loved spending time with her family. She was a member of the First Christian Church, a deaconess of the church and belonged to the Christian Women’s Fellowship of the church where she had served as its treasurer. She was also a 25 year member of the Independence Home Extension Unit. Marian was an avid seamstress and enjoyed making many ceramic projects.

Marian and Elmer Berry were united in marriage on April 24, 1937 in Atchison at the First Christian Church. Elmer preceded her in death on March 21, 1975. Marian married Charles ‘Ed’ Gilliland on October 16, 1976 also at the church and he preceded her in death on November 30, 2005. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one step-son, Charles E. Gilliland, II; two brothers; and five sisters.

Survivors include two daughters, Karen (Joe) Noll of Atchison and Jeanette Damkroger of Richardson, TX; one step-daughter, Peggy Gilliland of Horton, KS; one step-son, Stephen (Dorothy) Gilliland of Jacksonville, FL; one brother, Ted Otte of Atchison; five grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; thirteen step-great grandchildren; two step great-great grandchildren.

Larry Dean Jones, 67, of Atchison passed Friday, December 11, 2009 at his home, surrounded by his family.

Larry was born May 16th, 1942 in Atchison KS, the son of Loren and Anna (Hembrough) Jones. Mr. Jones was a self-employed welder and auto mechanic. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and working on cars.

He married Sharon Frasher on July 10, 1962 in Omaha, NE, she survives of the home. Darrell was born on April 3, 1951 in Atchison, KS. the son of Raymond and Waneda (Baker) Huff. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1969. He went to work for the Missouri-Pacific Railroad, then Flemings, as a sales clerk for J.C. Penney, then Feldman’s Clothing Store, Diebolts Clothing Store, and then moved to Leavenworth, KS. where he owned and operated the Huff Shoe Store, for over 13 years. While in Leavenworth he served on the City Council, and help originate the Downtown Association. Mr. Huff loved cars and later worked at Phalen Motors selling cars then as the used car sales manager for Vic’s Chevrolet, St. Joseph, Mo. Mr. Huff was a member of the (BPOE) Elks Lodge, Leavenworth, and the Masonic Lodge, Atchison.

Survivors include his mother; Waneda Huff, of Atchison, KS., a brother; Don (Martha) Huff, Atchison, KS., a niece; Brandy Wilson, Mooresville, IN., three great grandnephews, and one great grandniece.

CATHERINE E. NOLL , Catherine E. “Katie” Noll, 92, formerly of Hiawatha, KS. died Thursday, December 10th, 2009 at St. Mary’s Manor, Blue Springs, MO.

Catherine E. Wigand was born on April 22, 1917 in Nortonville, KS. the daughter of Martin and Catherine (Schrick) Wigand. She moved to Effingham in 1928 and graduated from St. Ann’s grade school in 1931 and from the Atchison County Community High School in 1935. She worked for the Extension Service and Soil Conservation District in Effingham for 5 years. She also worked for the Soil Conservation Service (Watershed Program) at Atchison, Cedar Vale and Frankfort until she retired in November 1982 after 27 years with the Service. She received several Outstanding Awards and Letters of Commendation during her years as a Government employee. Mrs. Noll was a member of St. Ann’s Church and the Altar Society at Effingham and Hiawatha, KS., and an auxiliary member of the Legion of Mary. Catherine was a member of the Kansas Chapter of Association of Retired SCS Employees, and a member of (NARFE) National Association of Federal Employees Chapter #2164. She especially enjoyed quilting and needle work in addition to gardening and flowers.

She was married to Oscar Noll on April 12, 1939 at St. Ann’s Church in Effingham. Mr. Noll preceded her in death on March 27, 1990. Survivors include two daughters; Donna Lee (John) Schletzbaum, Indianola, IA, and Sharon (Robert) Antes, Grain Valley, MO. a son; Jerry Noll, Wichita, KS., two sisters; Viola Wigand, Atchison, Ks. and Edith Hund, Paxico, KS., seven grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Her parents, husband Oscar and three sisters, Emma Wohletz , Ruth Adcock and Frances Koenig , and one great granddaughter, Kylie Antes preceded her in death.

Marcella was born October 3, 1926 in Effingham, KS, the daughter of the late William J. and Ella Elizabeth (Schumacher) Warren. She graduated from Potter High School in 1944. Marcella was a homemaker; substitute Post Master at the Potter Post Office and a Teacher’s Aide at the Potter Grade School. She enjoyed reading, solving puzzles, attending sporting events for her grandchildren and had also played on a women’s basketball league in Potter earlier in life. Marcella married Herman Dibbern on April 12, 1947 in Leavenworth, KS. He preceded her in death on November 11, 2005. She was also preceded in death by a son, William H. in January of 1966 and a daughter, Bonita J. Watkins in August of 1995.

Survivors include two children; Richard and Linda Dibbern, Atchison, KS and Joann Holland, Easton, KS, a sister; Wilma Benshoof, Silverdale WA, 8 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

LaMarne (Bryan) Bowen McNett, 89, of Atchison went to be with God on Wednesday, December 2, 2009.

LaMarne was born February 14, 1920 the daughter of Lawson and Sarah (O’Dell) Bryan. She was a housewife and homemaker. LaMarne was a member of the Salvation Army and Home League. She enjoyed embroidery, reading and volunteer work, but especially enjoyed her family, grandkids and friends.

LaMarne married Alvin Bowen in 1938; he preceded her in death in August 1966. She married Robert McNett in 1969; he also preceded her in death in March 1985. Survivors include five sons; Kenneth (Jackie) Bowen, Harold “Buzzy” Bowen, Frank (Sue) Bowen, Lyle (Lydia) Bowen, all of Atchison, and Michael (Janet) Bowen, Horton, KS; eight daughters; Frances (Fred) McFeeters, Van Buren, AR, Mary (Jim) Kopp, Alton, IL, Edith Billings, Bremington, WA, Lucy Warner, Ladys Island, SC, Rosa (Steve) Stryker, Palmetto, FL, Carolyn (Bud) Muncie, Valerie Thompson, and Pamela Weishaar all of Atchison. Rachael was born March 11, 1923 in Nortonville, KS, the daughter of the late William J. and Katherine E. (Hoffman) Noll. She attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School and graduated from Nortonville High School in 1940. Rachael was a housewife, member of St. Joseph’s Altar Society, American Legion Auxiliary and the Lane Unit. She enjoyed playing cards, embroidery, crocheting, gardening and volunteering for 4-H. Rachael especially enjoyed making projects for her family and adored her grandchildren. Farming related activities included Atchison County Livestock Board Spouses and Farm Bureau.

Rachael married Carl Wagner on April 20, 1944. He preceded her in death on May 2, 1979. She later married Thomas Rauth in 1983 and he preceded her in death in 1994. Survivors include two sons; Steve and Jodie Wagner, Little Rock, AR, Greg and Sherry Wagner, Nortonville, three daughters; Jane and Jim Guest, Waco, TX, Roberta (Byrdy) Wagner and John Hall, LaCoste, TX, Stacey and Terry Wolfe, Atchison, KS. David Laurie , 91, former Mayor of Atchison, KS, died Sunday, November 29,2009 at the Alders Gate Village, Topeka, KS.

David was born on June 13, 1918 in Atchison, Kansas the son of John and Hazel (Carrico) Laurie, Sr. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1936 and attended Kansas State University for one year. Mr. Laurie worked as a molder, then casting foreman for the former LFM and Rockwell International of Atchison for over 41 years before retiring in 1980. He served eight years as a City Commissioner for the City of Atchison, six of those years as Mayor of the City. Mr. Laurie was a charter member of the MO-KAN Regional Council, serving as Chairman from 1980 through 2006 and as a member until 2008. He was a Board member of the Kansas League of Municipalities, had received the Rockwell International’s Good Citizenship Award in 1981, and served on the Board of National Associations of Regional Councils, and the National League of Municipalities Public Safety Commission. In addition, he helped organize the local Midget Football program and was active in the American Legion Baseball program and YMCA Basketball League. He served on the Atchison City Recreation Commission, Kansas Youth Center of Atchison Advisory Board and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He was a member of the First Christian Church, an Elder Emeritus, served on the Scholarship Committee as Chairman for many years, the Active Masonic Lodge # 158, the Atchison YMCA, was an avid golfer, a member of several coffee clubs, and the Tuesday Lunch Canada Fishing Club.

Mr. Laurie was married to Geraldine Merritt on September 6, 1939 at the First Christian Church, Atchison, KS. Mrs. Laurie survives him of the home in Topeka, KS. Additional survivors include three sons; John Laurie, Overland Park, KS, David (Claudette) Laurie, Manhattan, KS, and Phil (Kay) Laurie, Topeka, KS, two sisters; Letha Colton, Tulsa, OK, and Betty Berger, Greensboro, NC, nine grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren. His parents, two brothers; James Laurie and John Laurie, Jr., and four sisters; Annie Laurie Johnson, Hazel Oaks, Barbara Conner, and Sandra Goodwin all preceded him in death.

Leonard was born January 17, 1918 in Atchison, the son of the late Leonard and Olive (Trainer) Barker, Sr. He attended school in Atchison and served in the US Army. He was a truck driver for the 414th Engineering Battalion serving in the Philippines. Junior worked 32 years at Pillsbury as a wheat and elevator cleaner. He was a life member of the VFW Post 1175 and enjoyed attending auctions and reading. Leonard liked to fly model airplanes, enjoyed gardening and tinkering with old cars and especially liked listening to music and spending time with his grandkids.

Leonard married Willetta Gilliland on August 18, 1940 in Atchison. She preceded him in death on April 20, 2005. Survivors include a son; Leonard W. and Annette Barker, Oak Grove, MO, daughter; Willetta Louise and Claude Zacharias, Sr., Atchison, 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Junior was also preceded in death by brothers; James, LeRoy, and Raymond Barker and sisters; Mary Flattre, Violet Franzel, and Della Franzel.

Helen worked for a short time at the Hallmark Cards Company, Leavenworth, KS and then as a clerk for the Santa Fe Railroad in Topeka, KS. She retired in 1992. Miss Kempin was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church, Topeka, KS, she enjoyed the Theatre, Stage plays, and especially loved her dog and animals.

Lila was president of the Willing Wonders Club, wrote many newspaper articles, was a member of the ILGWU 538 Club, and was the family historian.

Lila married John “Jack” Woods in December 1964; he preceded her in death August 12, 2002. Ruth M.Tipling was born on Sep. 20, 1919 in Muscotah, KS. She worked as a clerk for the Saunders Manufacturing Drug Store, Valley Falls. She was a former member of the Christian Church, Valley Falls, KS. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, canning, sewing, plants and flowers, camping and talking with family. Ruth was a loving wife and mother. She was a wonderful grandmother who enjoyed helping family. She is at peace now that the Lord has re-united her with her soul-mate James E. Willming , who preceded her in death on May 24, 2002.

Russell E. Kiehl ,85 years of age, of Atchison, KS., died unexpectedly Sat. November 28, 2009 at the Atchison Hospital.

Russell was born on March 4, 1924 in Atchison, KS, the son of Russell L. and Harriett (Kopelk) Kiehl. Mr. Kiehl graduated from Atchison High School in 1942. Following graduation from high school he moved to Benicia, CA, and worked at Benicia Arsenal. He was a retired Chief Master Sgt of the U.S. Airforce Reserves serving 33 years, and during World War II with the 506th Fighter Squadron. He served on Iwo Jima, and was honored with two Battle Stars for air combat and the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal. Mr. Kiehl was called to active duty during the Berlin Crisis in 1961-1962 and was stationed at Andrews Air Force Base outside of Washington, D.C. When he returned home Mr. Kiehl worked at the Kiehl Brothers Service Station, Atchison, then the Martin Oil Company, CHC Tire Supply, and then Page Airways until he retired in 1986. He continued to work at the Veterans Administration Medical Center and Fort Leavenworth, in Leavenworth KS for many years following his retirement. He was a member of the St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Nortonville, KS, the V.F.W. Post # 1175, and the American Legion Post # 6, both of Atchison, KS, a member of the Air Force Sergeants’ Association, was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and was an avid bowler.

Russell was married to Della Walker on February 23, 1945 in Jasper; AL. Mrs. Kiehl preceded him in death on November 30, 2004. His parents, a son; Russell E. Kiehl, Jr., two brothers; Harry E. Kiehl, and Carl E. Kiehl, also preceded him in death. Survivors include a daughter and Son-in-law; Jeannine A. and Stephen R. Wyatt, Topeka, KS, a brother; John H. Kiehl, Sun Lake, AZ., two grandchildren; J. Norman Hayes, 72, Atchison, passed away, Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at the Atchison Senior Village.

Norman was born November 2, 1937 in Atchison, KS the son of the late Fred and Bernice (Bigenwalt) Hayes. Norman worked on a shrimp boat in the Gulf of Mexico, in the maintenance department at Boston College and as a handyman around town. He enjoyed to go fishing, working on vehicles and Uncle Normy loved to make people laugh.

Norman married Nancy Dalbey and she preceded him in death. Later he married June Simpson, who also preceded him in death. He is survived by his children, Danny, Rodney, Michael and Randy Hayes, Susan Hayes, Jamie Wainright and Patty Hector, Sisters; Judy Prohaska, Atchison, KS and Patricia Negonsott, Effingham, KS, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a brother; Walter Hayes, and two sisters; Barbara Gilliland and Jeanette Hayes.

Leo G. Boos, 62, formerly of Atchison, passed away, Sunday, November 22, 2009 in Paola, KS.

Leo was born April 1, 1947, in Atchison, KS the son of the late Harold Charles and Evelyn S. (Novinski) Boos. He graduated from Maur Hill in 1965 and moved to Iowa where he worked as a butcher for Oscar Mayer. Leo married Yvonne Wood and they later divorced. He was a member of Sacred Heart and the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include two sons; John Boos, Hiawatha, KS, and James Boos, Kansas City, KS, four brothers; John (Dee), Vancouver, WA, Steve (Cheryl) Excelsior Springs, MO, George (Jane) and Harold (Olivia) both of Atchison, three sisters; Mary (Ray) Kopaska, Olathe, KS, Cecilia (Frank) Bisang, Overland Park, KS, and Kathy Kisenmacher, Valley, WA, and one grandson; Cody Boos, Reno, NV.

Leo was also preceded in death by two brothers; Charles and Al Boos and one sister; Theresa Baker.

Frances Mary Loob-Herricks, formerly of Everest, KS passed away November 19, 2009 at the age of 92. She was a resident of the Maple Heights Nursing Home, Hiawatha, KS. Frances was born in Beattie, KS on September 29, 1917 to Patrick Loob and Elizabeth Ludchen-Loob. She attended Mt. Saint Scholastica College in Atchison, KS and was an illustrator for Walt Disney on Snow White and other productions. She married Robert Nicholas Herricks on February 16, 1942 in Los Angeles, CA. They lived in Europe and many places across the United States during his 33-year career in the Army and civil service. They retired to Everest, KS in 1975. Frances was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Altar Society, Purcell, KS.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert and sisters, Aurilia Loob, Ethylinda Bollinger, and Katherine Schmidt.

Frances is survived by her brother Raymond Loob, four children, Clifton Robert Herricks, Edwin Eugene Herricks, James Michael Herricks, and Elizabeth Allyn Landau, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Ruth Nevitt Schmitt, 78, of Rushville, MO, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at the Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, MO.

Memorial services will be 7:00 pm, Tuesday, November 24, with visitation to follow until 9:00 pm at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home in Atchison, with the Rev. Bruce Haltom, officiating. Ruth was born on November 2, 1931, in Clarksdale, MO, the daughter of David and Velma (Welsh) Nevitt. She graduated from high school in Allerton, IA. She received her Theological degree from Central Baptist Theological College in Kansas City, KS and was the first woman American Baptist Minister in the State of Kansas. Ruth, along with her husband Lawrence, ministered to congregations in Whiting, Onaga, and Laclede, KS. Ruth had also taught Bible Study classes at the University of Kansas and had been a member of a Presidential Task Force under President Ronald Reagan.

Ruth was very passionate about sharing the Gospel with others. Her ministry and family were most important in her life. She enjoyed crocheting, tatting, crossword puzzles, cooking, making deserts, playing the piano, reading, drawing, painting and being with her grandchildren.

Ruth and Lawrence David Schmitt were married on April 15, 1951 in Topeka, KS. He survives of the home in Rushville. Other survivors include three sons, David (Darlene) Schmitt of Topeka, KS, Douglas (Candy) Schmitt of Horton, KS, Jack (Betti) Schmitt of St. Joseph, MO; one daughter, Heidi Nolte of Atchison; one sister, Vivian Karns of Nixa, MO; 20 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and their beloved dog, Rascal.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; one brother; and one granddaughter, Angel Schmitt.

Betty Lou was born March 29, 1925 the daughter of the late James B. and Alice M. (Foley) Gronniger, Sr. She graduated from Bendena High School and St. Joseph Business College. Betty Lou was a member of the St. Louis Church, Good Intent, and St. Louis Altar Society. She devoted her life to helping her husband and best friend on their farm and raising their children. She lived all of her married life on the same farm in the Good Intent Community.

Betty Lou married Lawrence H. Scherer on March 5, 1946 at St. Benedict’s Church, Kansas City, KS. He preceded her in death on October 6, 1998. Survivors include three sons; Henry & Bonnie, Jerome and Carl Scherer, all of Atchison, KS, two daughters; Rita and Chris Jones, and Marilyn Scherer, both of Atchison, a son-in-law, Bill Spilman, Effingham, KS, 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter; Dorothy Spilman, February 20, 1999, daughter-in-law; Grace Taylor Scherer, December 1, 1986 and brothers James, Odilo and John Gronniger.

Mr. Noll was born on Sept. 9, 1929 in rural Winchester, KS., the son of A.T. and Pearl (Servaes) Noll. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Noll was a farmer for most of his life in the Easton/Winchester community. He was a member of the Corpus Christi Church, the Leavenworth Area Chamber of Commerce, the Elks Lodge, Leavenworth, KS., and enjoyed fishing, hunting, finding mushrooms, traveling and checking on crop progress in the fields.

He was married to Dorothy Sass on Feb. 14, 1964 in Jarbalo, KS.. Mrs. Noll survives of the home in Winchester. Gerald E. Ford , 83 years of age, of Atchison, KS. died Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at the Atchison Medicalodge.

Gerald was born on May 9, 1926 in Atchison, KS. the son of Lester and Irene(Barnett) Ford. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1943. Mr. Ford was a World War II US Army veteran serving in the 30th Infantry, US Army. He was wounded in Germany and spent several months recovering in the hospital in Holland, and was a recipient of a Purple Heart. Mr. Ford was a master brick and concrete craftsman. He owned and operated Ford, Inc., in Atchison for many years until he retired in the late 1990’s. He was a Master Mason and member of the Martha Washington Chapter of the Masonic Lodge, Atchison, the Knights Templer, and 60 year member of the American Legion Post # 6, and V.F.W. Post # 1175. Gerald helped each summer with the markers for new inductees and installation of all the sidewalks in the Forrest of Friendship. He enjoyed traveling and investing in Casino’s.

He was married to Evelyn Nadine “Dee” Kurtz on Jan. 31, 1945 in Troy, KS. Mrs. Ford survives at Medicalodge of Atchison. Additional survivors include a daughter-n-law, Robyn Ford-Handke, Atchison, KS,a brother-in-law, Dennis Kurtz, Topeka, KS and several nieces and nephews. His parents, a son, Terry Lee Ford(3-14-1984), and a infant daughter, Vicki Kay Ford,(1948) two brothers; Norman and Lester Junior Ford, all preceded him in death.

Mary D. Potter, 96, formerly of Brushton, NY, passed away at Medical Lodge, Atchison, KS, Friday, November 6, 2009.

Born July 12, 1913 in Batavia, New York, to Sheldon D. and Mary Chase Dunlap, who preceded her in death. Upon graduation from High School, Mary attended Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, MA, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts Degree. She earned her Masters of Science Degree from Columbia University, New York, NY. She taught Science and Chemistry for 35 years at Brushton-Moira Central High School, Brushton, NY, retiring in 1975. Mary married Earl “Ted” Potter in 1935. Ted, one son, David Earl Potter, and one daughter, Mary Patricia Daury, preceded her in death.

She is survived by one daughter and son in law, Shellie and Don Smith of Rushville, MO, one daughter in law, Sharon Potter of Brushton, NY, 11 grandchildren, 19 great grandchildren, 3 great-great grandchildren, a niece and her husband, Barb and Norm Boyea of Malone, NY, and several other nieces and nephews.

There will be no service held in Atchison. Services will be held at Brushton, NY, in the Spring with interment at the Sand Hill Cemetery, Dickinson, NY. Mary was a member of the Ft. Covington, NY, Eastern Star for 60 years.

Christina and Andrew L. Evans were married on October 15, 1930 in Troy, KS. Together, they farmed for several years before moving to Scio, Oregon in 1952. While in Scio, Christina worked for the Stayton Cannery until her retirement in 1980. They moved to Huron, KS in 1981. She was a member of the Lutheran faith, and enjoyed gardening, crocheting, cooking, baking, and especially being with her family.

Survivors include one son, Andrew J. Evans, Scio, OR; five daughters, Anna Lee Kirkham, Cummings, KS, Dorothy Sferlazza, Dallas, OR, Rose Mary Nollen, Turner, OR, Vivian Hamilton, Huron, KS, Donna Broyles, Albany, OR; a brother, Victor Robbins, of Missouri; numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren.

William (Bill) M. Dugger, 74, Atchison, passed away, Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at the Atchison Medicalodge.

Bill was born on July 22, 1935 in Atchison, Kansas the son of the late Martin V. and Lillian (Surritte) Dugger. He attended Atchison public schools, and served in the U.S. Navy from 1954 to 1957. Mr. Dugger worked as a firearms assembler in the Navy from 1957-1962. He was formerly a truck driver for Bromley & Son’s Concrete, the former LFM Company, Atchison, and retired from Midwest Grain. Mr. Dugger enjoyed fishing, woodworking, traveling and spending time with family.

Mr. Dugger was married to Mildred Elaine Hansen, she preceded him in death. They had four children, a son; Bill Dugger, Jr., San Diego, CA, and three daughters; Patricia Collier, California, Elizabeth Dugger, Scotts Bluff, NE, and Renae (Rick) Vice, McCoole, NE. He was later married to Pam Behler. They had two children; a son; Steven Dugger, Sr., Atchison, KS, and a daughter, Melody Dugger, Farmersville, TX. He then married Ronda Walker, she preceded him in death. They had three children; a son Martin (Kerry) Dugger, Atchison, KS, and two daughters; Angela Dugger, Atchison, KS, and Belinda Foust, who preceded Bill in death. Bill was then married to Clarice Werth, she preceded him in death. Their children are Jamie Morast, Olathe, KS, Jolene Smith, Spring Hill, KS and John Nunn, who also preceded him in death. Bill is also survived by brothers; Donnie, St. Joseph, MO, and Kenny, Leavenworth, KS, sisters; Shirley Black, Rushville, MO, Betty Bramble, Sugar Lake, MO, Helen O’Trimble, Topeka, KS, Linda Stahl, Atchison, Carol Myers, Omaha, NE, Sherri Crane, Orlando, FL, Mary Smith, Leavenworth, KS and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She loved reading, crocheting, plastic canvas stitching and quilting. Betty will be missed by many.

Betty married Merle Benson on October 26, 1947 in Cameron, MO. He preceded her in death on June 30, 2000. She was also preceded in death by brothers; Charles and Henry Hanks and sisters; Irma Corfman, Lucille Bernoy and Lora Todd.

Survivors include two daughters; Judy (Darryl) Kerns Platte City, MO and Diane (Roger) Wise, Savannah, MO, and four grandchildren; Devin and Dustin Kerns and Cody and Callie Wise.

Bette was a homemaker, member of the First Baptist Church and enjoyed reading, sewing, and traveling. She especially enjoyed time spent with her family.

Bette married Grimes Edwin Behler on February 5, 1956 in Marana, AZ. He survives of the home. Additional survivors include sons; Gregory (June) Behler, Weston, MO; David Behler, Leavenworth, KS; Justin (Bobbi) Behler, Atchison, KS; a daughter; Dianna (Dennis) Snell, Atchison, 15 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.

Leta R. Whiteman, 78, of Hiawatha, passed away, Thursday, October 29, 2009 at the Lighthouse Guesthouse in Hiawatha.

Leta was born January 19, 1931 in Taylor, Nebraska to the late Abe A. and Conda (Hoobler) Duryea. She worked as a clerk for the General Services Administration for the US Government. Leta was very active in helping the Muscular Dystrophy Association, enjoyed making crafts and was an excellent cook. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family and helping those in need.

Leta married Robert S. Whiteman on May 13, 1958. He preceded her in death on April 22, 2004. LeRoy Weishaar, 91, of Nortonville passed away Wednesday, October 28, 2009.

Mr. Weishaar was born on August 23, 1918 in Nortonville, KS the son of J.L. and Susan (Lucius) Weishaar. Pike joined the Army in 1941, and served in Normandy, Northern France and Rhineland during WWII. He is a recipient of the Purple Heart, Good Conduct Medal and American Defense Service Ribbon. He co-owned and operated with his brothers Weishaar Bros. Inc. an International Harvester implement dealership and hardware and propane gas company, he retired in 1974. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, the VFW, Lion’s Club, and American Legion. He was a 4th degree knight of the Knight of Columbus. He was a sponsor for international students in Leavenworth, and was a key member in making the centennial book of Nortonville in 1973. He enjoyed fishing, big band music, crossword puzzles, solitaire, traveling, family tree genealogy and especially spending time with his family.

Pike married Bessie Weber on April 15, 1944 in Durham NC; she preceded him in death on August 10, 1981. He then married June Robey on September 4, 1982 in Nortonville, they later divorced. Survivors include two sons, Phillip (Marilyn) Weishaar, Chapman KS, David (Anne) Weishaar, Nortonville, KS, a daughter Laura (Bill) Keirns, Nortonville, KS, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, also a special friend, companion and caregiver Margaret Long. He is preceded in death by his parents, eight brothers and five sisters.

Margaret Lillian Bizianes was born on June 2, 1917 in Louisville, KY, the daughter of John G. and Clara (Siegel) Bizianes. She was first married to Alfred W. Stanhope in 1932. Mr. Stanhope preceded her in death in 1935. She was later married to William “Ed” Hall on April 20, 1942 in Lebanon, MO. Mr. Hall preceded her in death on Nov. 7, 1996. Mrs. Hall worked as a sewer for the Saunders Mfg. for approximately twenty-five years. She was a member of the Cummings Christian Church, was an active worker for the Ladies Aide of the church. She enjoyed reading, and especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include a son; Larry (Tina) Hall, Cummings, KS., three daughters; Betty J. Ellison, Cummings, KS., Phyllis (Gayle) Robbins, Cummings, KS., Linda (Marvin) Myer, Atchison, KS., seven grandchildren, four step grandchildren, and thirteen great grandchildren. Her parents, both husbands,a son; William Ed Hall, Jr., a brother; August J. Bizianes, and a sister; Elaine Byrne also preceded her in death.

Lester Roy Grame, 88, Lancaster, KS, passed away peacefully at his home, Thursday, October 22, 2009.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM, Monday, October 26, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Galen Belcher officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Lester was born January 11, 1921 in Cummings, KS to the late William and Della (Wolf) Grame. He graduated from Atchison High School and later became a farmer and rancher. Lester was the president of the West Platte School Board and a member of the Masonic Lodge for a number of years. He and Virginia were avid auction attendants, refinished antiques and he continued to combine up until several weeks before his death.

Lester married Jeanne Hayes on April 12, 1942 and they later divorced. He then married Virginia Johnson on July 21, 1970; she survives at a nursing home in Highland, KS. Additional survivors include daughters; Marie Grame, Camden Point, MO; Roxanne (Charles) Trautloff, Atchison, KS and Wanda (Michael) Rose, Platte City, MO; brothers, Bill Grame, San Diego, CA and Charles Grame, Platte City, MO; sister, Jesse Boney, San Diego, CA; step-children; Pat Gering, Peg Hargrove, both of Atchison, and Tim Johnson, Bucyrus, KS, grandchildren, Heather (Sean) Johnson and Samantha Comer, great-grandchild; Reagan Johnson; numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren, special nephew, Richard (Arlene) Grame, Cummings, KS and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lester was also preceded in death by a son; Kenny Grame, April 24, 1965 and brothers; August, Harry, Walter, Robert and Kenneth.

Irene "Cookie" Frances Barker, 89 of Atchison passed Tuesday October 13, 2009 at her home with family by her side.

Irene “Cookie” was born February 24, 1920 on her mother’s birthday the daughter of John and Irene (Johnston) Jones. She was the oldest of five children. Irene grew up in Atchison and attended the Atchison schools. Irene “Cookie” married Howard Barker on August 13, 1938. They had been married 67 years until Howard passed away February 7, 2006. They spent most of their years living in Atchison except for a brief time in California while Howard was in the Navy.

She had several jobs in Atchison which included a cashier at Schmiere’s Drug Store, elevator operator at the Professional Office Building, salesclerk at United Dept. Store, Dept. Manager at Wards, assisting Howard with stenciling work for Snowden Mize and last but not least Salesclerk at Waisner’s. She especially loved selling brides-to-be that special wedding gown. She worked for three generations at Waisner’s and was there for 26 years until her retirement at age 79. She was a member of the First Christian Church. Irene will always be remembered for her kind heart and for her love of people. She enjoyed embroidering tea towels and giving them to her family and friends. She loved making pies and giving them away to the special people in her life. Irene always loved preparing meals and entertaining at her home. She loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. She enjoyed her years working downtown on the mall and was a friend to everyone associated with the other businesses downtown and all the customers. Irene also enjoyed shopping and buying for others, especially her grandchildren. Playing cards (especially pitch) with family and friends was a favorite enjoyment for her. Since the grandchildren and great grandchildren were 3 years old they enjoyed a yearly vacation to the Lake of the Ozarks or Branson with Grandma Cookie and Pop.

Survivors include two daughters Connie and Bob Swogger, Atchison, KS Nancy and Steve Oliver, Atchison, KS, three grandchildren Sandy (John) Fresh, Lisa(Paul) Haynes, David (Jaime) Oliver, five great grandchildren, Eric Skidmore, Austin Skidmore, Caden Oliver, Carter Oliver, and Lauren Haynes and numerous very special nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Howard Barker, her sister Corinne (Harold) Nitz, Betty (John) Cameron, Mary (John) Potts and a brother John Sonny (Gerry) Jones.

Special thanks to Rev. Lee Hendon, Dr. Eplee and special neices, Joyce Klein, Mary Liggett, Barb Smith, Linda Parrott, and Kay Baker and Abundant Life Hospice who assisted in her care during her time of need.

James Albert 'Angel' Shockey, 62, of Atchison, KS, passed away unexpectedly on October 10, 2009 at his home in Atchison, KS.

James was born on September 2, 1947 in Atchison, the son of Louie A. and Goldie (Snopak) Shockey. James attended Atchison High School and had worked as an arc welder for the former Rockwell International steel foundry in Atchison. James was of the Catholic faith and enjoyed traveling, hiking, motorcycles and collecting knives.

James and Thea Smith were married in 1979 in San Antonio, TX. Thea preceded James in death in 2002. James was also preceded by his father, Louie Shockey, an infant son, and his brother, John.

Survivors include his mother, Goldie Smyth and her husband, Victor, of Atchison; four sisters, Diane Craine of Waldron, MO, Sandy Chronister of Riverside, MO, Willa Fowler of Pattonsburg, MO, and Louise Poplewell of Howardwick, TX; several Aunts, Uncles, nieces and nephews; and his best friend, Alvin Norton of Atchison.

Ellen married Don Hollenbeck March 1, 1968 in Hiawatha, KS; he survives of the home in Effingham. Additional survivors include three sons; John and Monica, Atascadero CA, Steve and Lynn, Wichita, KS and Ron and Christie, Algona, IA, a daughter; Donelle and Mike Rork, Horton, KS, sister; Phyllis Bomberger, Atchison, KS and 6 grandchildren.

Mac was born April 3, 1922 in Nortonville, KS to the late William and Hazel (McCoy) Hoffman. He graduated from Nortonville High School, made his home in Effingham, and married Thelma Christie, on June 1, 1946. Mac worked 27 years for the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a soil conservation technician. He also farmed and was a dairyman until 1986, when he retired.

He was a member of the Effingham Union Church and is survived by his wife, Thelma, of Effingham, one daughter; Ann (Darrell) Christensen, Topeka, KS, three sons; John (Laurie) of Sioux Falls, SD, Jim (Sandi) and Jeff (Tana) both of Effingham, KS, fourteen grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, and two sisters; Dorothy Jo Hagen, of Dallas, TX and Rosmary Cummings, West Des Moines, IA. Two brothers, Bill and Jack, preceded him death.

Mel was born January 2, 1947 in Atchison, KS the son of the late Wilford and Leila Schuler. He graduated from Nortonville High School in 1965 and attended Highland Community College. Mel worked for Bromley Quarry; was a self employed roofing contractor and had most recently worked at the V.F.W. He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, gardening and watching classical movies. Mel was an avid KU fan who adored his grandchildren.

Mel and Sue Sullivan were married July 20, 1968 in Atchison. Sue survives of the home. Mildred I. Lee, 88, formerly of Atchison, passed away Monday, October 5, 2009 at the Bickford Assisted Living Home in Overland Park, KS.

Mildred was born October 18, 1920, the daughter of William A. and May (Hoffman) Noll in the Mooney Creek Community of Winchester, KS. Mildred and Harold E. Lee were married on July 23, 1940 at the Corpus Christi Church in Mooney Creek. Together they owned and operated Lee’s Body and Fender shop in Atchison, where Mildred was the bookkeeper. After Harold passed away on Oct. 11, 1996, Mildred moved to Kansas City in 1997. She was also preceded in death by her parents and two grandchildren, Heidi Muensch and Lawrence Kaminsky, Jr.

Mildred was known as a skilled seamstress for making clothing, curtains and bedspreads. She enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening; fishing, especially on their fishing trips to Canada; and was an excellent cook. Mildred was a member of St. Joseph’s and St. Benedict’s Church’s, the Altar Society, PTA, and had been a Girl Scout Leader.

Mildred is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Dora (Ray) Muensch of Kansas City, MO and Linda (Larry) Kaminsky of Olathe, KS; two brothers, Ray Noll of Atchison and Ken (Dorothy) Noll of Winchester, KS; one sister, Virginia McCoy of Atchison, KS; four grandchildren, Lee Muensch, Alex Muensch, Kristin (Quentin) McArthur and Matt (Rochelle) Kaminsky; eight great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mildred’s family would also like to thank Catholic Charities Hospice Staff and Volunteers and the staff of Bickford Assisted Living for all their love and support.

Mr. Turpin farmed and worked as a welder for over 40 years at the former LFM, Rockwell International and Atchison Casting before retiring in 1991. Gerald was a member of the Sugar Creek Christian Church, a member of the Rushville/Sugar Lake Levy Association for many years, and served on the Public Water Supply Board, Rushville, MO. for many years.

He was married to Donna Church on Aug. 20th, 1950 at the Rushville Christian Church; Rushville, MO., Mrs. Turpin survives at her home in the Atchison Medicalodge. He graduated from West Platte High School in Weston, MO in 1945 and attended the University of New Mexico while serving in the U.S. Navy. Ed retired from Rockwell International after over 40 years as the Machine Shop Superintendent. He worked and lived on the Kidwell Farm near Bean Lake until 1993 when he moved to Paradise Lake, Effingham. Ed enjoyed spending time with his family, golfing, fishing, hunting and winters in Texas. He was a passionate pilot and belonged to Ducks Unlimited, Bean Lake Hunting Club, and Atchison’s own Riverman. Mr. Kidwell was also a big game guide for numerous outfitters in the northwest U.S.

Ed is survived by his wife of over 62 years Gertrude (Trudy) Haapala; his eight children: Anna Lynne (Joe) Poss, Farley, MO, Gail (Steve) Goldberg, Sausalito, CA, Donna (Larry) Geritz, Atchison, Ben (Judy) Kidwell, Atchison, Jeff (Peggy) Kidwell, Bethesda, MD, Denise (Gene) Day, Platte City, MO, Lisa (Dwight) Burge, Atchison and Jan ( Darrin) Crockett, Weston, MO, a sister; Betty Jean Vollmer, Louisburg, KS, 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a son; Robert Wayne Kidwell in 1947.

Ralph L. Church of Atchison passed peacefully from this life on September 24, 2009 at the La Verna Village in Savannah, MO. Born November 8, 1914, Ralph was preceded in death by his beloved wife of over 75 years, Margie (Ferris) Church, earlier this year. Also preceding him in death were his parents, Steven and Willella K. (Jones) Church, and four brothers, Roe, Raymond, Earl, and Jim. Ralph is survived by one brother, W.T. Church Sr., of Amazonia, Missouri, and by many nieces and nephews and their families.

In his professional life, Ralph left the family farm during the Depression to work for the Burlington Railroad. After WWII, Ralph moved to Bonner Springs, Kansas, and began as a linesman for Kansas Power and Light. Eventually he transferred to Salina and rose to a supervisory position in which he oversaw the installation of substations and new lines. He continued performing the job he loved until his retirement over 40 years later. With an eighth-grade education, Ralph laughed about sometimes teaching electrical engineering classes to new KP&L recruits who held graduate degrees.

Following retirement, Ralph dedicated his abundant energy to the Brotherhood of the Masonic Lodge, Lions Club, Eastern Star, and charitable activities throughout the community. He loved people. Until his final months, Ralph remained a familiar, cheerful face in the Atchison and Rushville communities, where he considered his many, many friends as close as family.

Funeral Services will be 2:00 pm, Saturday, September 26, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home in Atchison. Burial will follow in the Sugar Creek Cemetery, south of Rushville, MO. Family will receive friends Saturday from 1:00 pm until service time at the funeral home. Harry F. Still ,90 years of age, long time business owner of Atchison Sheet Metal, died peacefully on Sat. Sept. 19th, 2009 at his home surrounded by his loving caretakers.

Mr. Still was born on Oct. 29, 1918 in Des Moines, IA, the son of Frank and Gladys (Horner) Still. Harry graduated from Atchison High School in 1936. Mr. Still worked on military aircrafts during World War II in Alexandria, LA. Mr. Still owned and operated the Atchison Sheet Metal Company in Atchison for many years, and he also raised cattle on his farm. Harry was a member of the Elks Club for over 30 years, a member of the Sheet Metal Workers Union, Local # 2, Kansas City, MO.and had served on the JU4 School Board in the early sixties. He enjoyed spending time with friends and family at the VFW, duck-deer and turkey hunting, and commercial fishing on the Missouri River.

He was married to Marie E. Sanders on May 1, 1940 in Harrisonville, MO., Mrs. Still preceded him in death on April 30, 2004. Survivors include a sister; Ellie Brown, Albuquerque, NM, two grandchildren; Larry Still, Phillipsburg, NJ., and Susan Heim, Topeka, KS., and several nieces and nephews, special friend; Evelyn Domann, Nortonville, daughter in law; Vicki Gray, Florida, and brother in law, Ed Baker, Carlisle, IA , and his caretakers; Lyle and Lydia Bowen of the home. Kevin was born July 20, 1972 in El Dorado, KS to Frank and Pam (McCord) DeFisher. He graduated from Circle High School, Towanda, KS, in 1990, Butler County Community College, El Dorado, KS, 1992, and Emporia State University, Emporia, KS, 1995. Kevin loved working for the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks as Game Warden and Boating Safety Officer. In 2007, he earned the Boating Law Enforcement Officer of the Year Award from the National Association of State Boating Law Administrators. He also found fulfillment as a member of the Atchison County Rescue Team. Kevin will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Betty J. Cline, 82, of Atchison, passed away Tuesday, September 8, 2009 at Vintage Park of Atchison.

Betty was born November 23, 1926 in Grant City, MO the daughter of Albert G. and Goldie M. (Rucker) Hill. She worked at the Atchison Hospital and in the food department of the Atchison Middle School. Betty was an active member at Trinity Lutheran Church belonging to the Altar Guild and LWML and also serving as a greeter. Betty enjoyed camping, fishing and spending time with her family.

Betty married James E. Cline on April 4, 1942 in St. Joseph, MO. Mr. Cline preceded her in death on June 4, 2005. Survivors include her sons; James W. and Diane Cline, Mound View, MN, Thomas D. and Connie Cline, Atchison, Ronald E. and Judy Cline, Atchison, Daniel E. and Cathleen Cline, Tacoma, WA, Michael and Betty Cline, Atchison, Paul C. and Tracy Cline, Atchison, a daughter; Cheryl and Samuel Hitchens, Atchison, 22 grandchildren and 46 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by her parents, a son; Gary R. Cline, brother; Lionel Wayne Hill, and two sisters; Frances Goodwin and Barbara Larkin.

Robert was born on Oct. 27th, 1931 in Atchison, KS. the son of Mont O. and Edith (Norris) Ball. He graduated from Atchison High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Ball worked for over 40 years at the Midwest Grain Products the last several years in the Alcohol shipping department, before retiring in 1995. Mr. Ball was a member of the Faith Bible Fellowship Church, was a life member of the VFW, Post #1175, Atchison, and enjoyed bowling, fishing, his dog, Sammy, and was a water color Artist.

He was married to Elaine Schubert on Nov. 22, 1971 in Atchison, KS. Mrs. Ball survives of the home. Additional survivors include a daughter; Vivian (Roland) Moore, Atchison, KS., and two sons; Monte Ball, Atchison, KS. and Jack Miller, Kansas City, MO., a brother; Elmer G. Christopher R. Wehking ,46 years of age, died Tuesday, September 1, 2009 following a tractor accident on his farm in the Old Huron,Kansas area.

Chris was a farmer and farmed on the Wehking family farm between Lancaster and Everest, KS. He was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lancaster, KS. and enjoyed gardening, dogs, and especially his family, and his nieces and nephews.

He was married to Deanna Cummings on July 12th, 1986 at St. John’s Church, Lancaster, KS. She survives of the home. Mr. Goodpaster was born August 31, 1912 in Owingsville, Kentucky the son of William Nelson and Mina Pearl (Craig) Goodpaster. Morgan attended school until his father passed away and he and his brothers had to stay home and work the family farm. He owned and operated his own farm in Weston for many years. He attended church at the Church of Nazarene in Weston, MO; he enjoyed reading, gardening, mushroom hunting and being outdoors.

Morgan married Violet Dawn Galbreath on June 19, 1923 in Indiana, she survives of the home. Additional survivors include one son JB and Ann Goodpaster, Weston, MO, four daughters, Anna Pearl Cox, Weston, MO, Charlene and Everett Bishop, St. Joseph, MO, Billie Jean Lovelady, DeKalb, MO, Rebecca and John O’Connor, Camden Point, MO and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His parents, two sons David Nelson Goodpaster, and Michael Leo Goodpaster, five brothers James, Charles, Espie, Banks, Ambers Goodpaster, three grandchildren Shelley Diane Goodpaster, Jason Lee Goodpaster and Zechariah Matthew Crawford all preceded him in death.

She owned and operated His & Her’s Beauty Shop in Everest, KS and the Muffies Café in Everest, KS. She was a member of the Rushville Christian Church, enjoyed cooking, traveling and especially her children and grandchildren.

She was married to Gary V. Killoren on February 13, 1970 in Rushville MO. Mr. Killoren preceded her in death on April 11, 1999. Survivors include two sons; Bryan (Heidi) Killoren, Terry Killoren, a daughter; Katrina Killoren and Joe Hall, all of Rushville, MO, a sister; Cheryl Jeffery, Topeka, KS, brother-in-law; Eddie Browning and sister-in-law; Nancy Browning, both of Rushville, MO, eight grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was a devoted mother and housewife who also had worked at various times for the Blish-Mize Company, Atchison Globe and Steinite Labs, all of Atchison. Marilyn was a member of the Cummings United Methodist Church, WCGU Circle of the church, and Pineview Country Club. Marilyn enjoyed golfing, bowling, camping, boating, going to truck pulls and spending time with her family and friends.

Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents and an infant daughter, Brenda Kay.

Survivors include her husband, Rodney, of the home; son, Tim Kooser and his wife, Chris, of Basehor, KS; son, Rick Kooser and his wife, Peggy, of Basehor; four devoted grandchildren, Colby, Shelby, Travis and Derek; a sister, Barb Hisey of Cummings; a brother, Gary Schrader of Topeka.

Marvin A Volle 72, of Effingham, passed away, Monday August 24, 2009 at his home.

Marvin was born December 31, 1936 in Summerfield KS, the son of Arthur and Mable (Brouhard) Volle. He served in the US Navy during the Korean War. Mr. Volle worked for Ashland Oil Company doing road construction for 48.8 years. He was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and the VFW. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed his dogs.

He was united in marriage to Patricia Johnson on May 16, 1959. She preceded him in death on August 29, 1981. Survivors include two sons Bill(Sheila) Volle, LeCompton, KS, Dan (Deanna) Volle, Atchison, KS, Four daughters Debbie Volle, Topeka, Beth (Gary) Thompson, Horton, Theresa Miller, Atchison and Janelle Poff, Topeka. Two sisters Velma (Steve) Rogacki, Colorado Springs, CO, Ruby (Chuck-preceded) Roberts, Cottage Grove, OR, sixteen grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Edith worked as a tax preparer for the H & R. Block Company in Atchison, KS for over 25 years, before retiring in 1990. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, and the National Kennel Club. She enjoyed raising poodles, camping, sewing, crocheting, and letter writing.

She was married to Francis W. Sinclair, Sr., on November 22, 1943, Oklahoma City, OK. Mr. Sinclair preceded her in death on May 1, 1977. She was later married to Delbert Dodds and he also preceded her in death. Survivors include three sons; Richard (Willette) Sinclair, Atchison, KS, David (Regina) Sinclair, Atchison, KS, Jerry Sinclair, Seligman, MO, two daughters; Marilyn (Vernon) Brobst, Lawrence, KS., Barbara Smith, Atchison, KS, fourteen grandchildren, twenty-six great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter. She was retired from the Rushville State Bank and was a member of the Sugar Creek Christian Church and the Sugar Creek Ladies Aid. Louise enjoyed quilting, gardening, her flowers and her family, especially the grandkids.

Louise was married to Northie Brown, on March 5th 1942 in St. Joseph; he preceded her in death in 1989. Her parents, a step-mother Louise Schmitt Johnson, a sister Edna Fitzgerald and a brother Herbert Johnson also preceded her in death. James was born March 23, 1924 in Conway, AR, the son of G.W. and Eva (Gentry) Kelley. He left school and served in the Coast Guard from 1941-1945 during WWII. After completing his tour of duty in the service he went back to finish his senior year of high school. He worked full time at Rockwell during the night and attended Atchison High School during the day to earn his high school diploma. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, a lifetime member of the Masonic Lodge #158 and the First Baptist Church, where he served as usher and trustee for a number of years. James enjoyed gardening and spending time with his family.

James married Mary Sue Masingill on November 9, 1946 in Little Rock, AR; she survives of the home in Atchison. Additional survivors include a daughter; Peggy (Kenny) Scholz, Atchison, one granddaughter; Nikki (Shawn) Hamre, Kansas City, MO, one grandson; Craig Scholz, Atchison, KS, three great-granddaughters; Lauren and Alex Hamre and Hayden Scholz, two sisters; Marie Hopkins and Elaine Glover and one brother; Harold Kelley.

Drug Store for many years. She was presently working as a secretary/ bookkeeper for Rockey’s Service. Sue married Bill Bales in 1979 and they were later divorced. She was known for her famous chocolate chip cookies and fried chicken. Sue enjoyed gambling, reading and especially spending time with her grandson.

Bertha was born on Febraury 13, 1911 in Effingham, KS the daughter of Charles Benton and Evaline (Meyer) Henderson. She graduated from Atchison County Community High School, attended Emporia State Teachers College and Mt. St. Scholastica. Bertha was an Atchison County school teacher from 1929 to 1942 teaching 17 years at District #42, Farmington, Sunnyside, and White Clay schools. After teaching Bertha worked as a bookkeeper and office girl at Atchison Iron & Metal Company working there over eighteen years. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Atchison, having served as a deaconess, then as a Deaconess Emeritus and was active in the Christian Women’s Fellowship, taught a Sunday School Class, was a former member of the Kansas Retired Teachers Association, and a seventy-five year member of the Arime Chapter # 231, Order of the Eastern Star, Effingham, KS. She came to Atchison in 1935.

Bertha was married to William D. Bunnell on May 23, 1937 at the farm home south of Effingham, KS. The later built a home in the Bellevue Community, in Sept. of 1940 and lived there for many years. Mr. Bunnell preceded her in death on August 23, 1969. Her parents, two brothers; Harry C. and Milton W. Henderson, and a sister; Frances E. Henderson Hargrove also preceded her in death. She is survived by many nieces and nephews including Lois Jean Myers and Milton Hines, both of Lancaster, KS.

Dorothy was born on a farm in Effingham, KS on June 6, 1930 the daughter of Walter E. and Edna (Schupbach) Wardin. She attended grade school in Maple Grove and high school in Effingham and graduated from Atchison High in 1948. After graduation she attended business school in Kansas City, MO. She was married to Bobby Dick Hargrove on July 2, 1950 and they resided in Effingham, KS. She worked at Page Airways in Atchison until 1954. She then worked at the Effingham Grade School as secretary until 1976 and then as a full time secretary at Atchison County Community High School. She moved to Overland Park, KS in 1993 to live closer to her children after her husband passed away. She worked as a secretary for the Olathe School District until she retired. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, liked to travel, listening to the radio and loved to work. She especially enjoyed her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by daughters; Carol Hargrove-Devlin, her husband; Matt of Overland Park, KS and his children Ryan Devlin, New York City, NY and Heather Steinkamp and her daughter; Jordan of Topeka, KS, Sharon Antes, her husband Leo, and their children Morgan, 20, Mia, 18, and Mitchell, 13, all of Olathe, KS, a son; Tom Hargrove, his wife, Pam, and their children; Madison, 18, Jaxon, 15, and Alyssa, 9, all of Shawnee, KS. She also leaves behind her beloved dog; Mitzi.

Dr. Hutchinson practiced optometry in Bonner Springs, KS for seven years, and later at Ft. Leavenworth, KS.. He was a member of the American Optometric Assoc, and the Kansas Optometric Association. David enjoyed music and photography.

He was married to Ann Green on Sept. 1, 1990 in Topeka, KS. Mrs. Hutchinson survives of the home. Frances Tuley , 95, formerly of Effingham, KS, died Saturday, July 25th, 2009 surrounded by family at the Medicalodge of Atchison, KS.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, July 29th, 2009 at the Effingham Union Church with Rev. Jeff Cochran officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery, Effingham, KS. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 11:00 AM on Wednesday, at the Effingham Union Church. The Becker Chapel in Effingham is handling the arrangements. Frances was born on December 26th, 1913 in Effingham, KS, the daughter of Robert and Mary (Hawk) Foster. She graduated from Atchison County Community High School. She taught in the county schools at Forrest Grove, Good Intent and the Rose Valley schools. She also worked as the school lunch director for USD# 377 for over 21 years. She was a member of the Effingham Union Church, was a member of the Rebekah Lodge #376 for over 50 years, was Past Noble Grand, President of Kansas District # 2, a member of the Sara Circle, of the church, the Senior Citizens, Willing Helpers Club, and the Atchison Hospital Auxiliary.

Frances was married to Carl Tuley, on April 16, 1935 at the Effingham Methodist Church. Mr. Tuley preceded her in death on April 5, 1987. Her parents and a son; Charles Tuley (2005), two sisters; Betty Westerman, and Olive Logan, three brothers; Leonard, J.R., and Hugh Foster, and one great grandson also preceded her in death. Survivors include a daughter; Mary Ann (Jim) Hosier, Atchison, KS, a son; Ron (Linda) Tuley, Atchison, KS,two brothers; Ray Foster, Horton, KS, and Charles Foster, Washington, KS, nine grandchildren, and fourteen great grandchildren, and two step great grandchildren.

Lois Jean Ross, 78, Atchison, KS, passed away Thursday, July 23, 2009 at Heartland Regional Medical Center with her family by her side.

Funeral services will be 2:30 PM, Monday, July 27, 2009 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Deacon Travis Dodson, Carol Baptist Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 2:00-4:00 PM Sunday at the funeral home. Jean was born June 10, 1931 in Atchison the daughter of Ernest and Inez (Pennington) Burge. She was a member of the Carol Baptist Church. Jean enjoyed sewing, arts & crafts, gardening and spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her favorite past times were going to the Casino and taking long rides with her family.

Jean married John V. (Jack) Ross, Jr. in Leavenworth, KS on August 14, 1952. He preceded her in death in October of 1985. Survivors include son; Jack Ross, Atchison, KS, daughter; Sharon Painter, Atchison, KS, brothers; Kenny Burge, Leavenworth, KS, Bob Burge, Lancaster, KS, and Don Burge, Potter, KS, sister; Opal Smith, Colorado Springs, CO, 7 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by sons; Charles Thomas Ross and William Eugene Ross, daughter; Virginia Mae Ross, sisters; Betty Wilburn, Dorothy Sullivan and Shirley Gill,a brother Bud Burge, a granddaughter; Stacy Ann Horton and sister-in-laws; Betty Burge and Ruth Burge.

Charles M. “Jack” Jasper , 71 of Atchison, KS passed away Thursday July 23, 2009 at the Northland LTAC Hospital in Kansas City.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM Monday July, 27, 2009 at the First Christian Church, Atchison, KS with Rev. Lee Hendon officiating and Pastor Donald Harter assisting. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00PM Sunday July 26, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Jack was born October 24, 1937 in Fanning, KS, the son of Virgil and Genevieve (Pickerell) Jasper. He graduated from Troy High School. He worked for General Motors as a welder and a team leader for 37 ½ years before retiring ten years ago. Mr. Jasper was member of the First Christian Church, he enjoyed watching his great grandchildren, gardening, keeping his truck clean and going to ball games and was considered a workaholic.

Jack was married to Gretchen Gillispie on October 24th, 1957; Mrs. Jasper survives of the home. Additional survivors include two daughters; Donna Jasper, Kansas City, MO and Jackie Jasper, Atchison, KS, two brothers; Mike (Luanne) Jasper, Troy, KS, Pat (Trish) Jasper, Troy, KS, two grandchildren; Ashley (Matt) Stout, Atchison, KS and Hilary (Rick) Thompson, Atchison, KS and four great grandchildren. His parents, a brother; Bill Jasper and two sisters; Donna Lee and Sarah Etta all preceded him in death.

Jacob T. Warriner , 19 years of age, died Saturday, July 18, 2009 following an accident in Atchison County, KS.

Jacob was born on November 14, 1989 in Atchison, KS the son of Marty and Christie (Chartier) Warriner. He graduated from Atchison County Community High School in 2008 where he was active in all sports, football, basketball, soccer and baseball. He enjoyed playing the drums in the high school band, playing golf and was always involved as a leader in the school spirit squad. Jacob was very artistic and enjoyed riding four wheelers with his friends. He worked a Callahan’s in Lancaster, Bottorff Construction, and then as a mechanic and tow truck driver for Ray’s Service Center, Oskaloosa, KS. He was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lancaster, KS.
