Leona A. Cooley, 93, Atchison, KS. died Monday, October 06, 2008 at the Atchison Hospital, Atchison, KS.

Funeral services will be 11:00 AM on Friday, Oct. 10th, 2008 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Joseph Hansen, Pastor of the Carol Baptist Church officiating . Burial will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Atchison. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 PM on Thursday, Oct. 9th, 2008 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Leona was born on December 27, 1914 in Atchison, KS. the daughter of William H. and Louise A. (Dunn) Dunsmore. She graduated from Atchison High School and worked as a homemaker and housewife. She was a member of the Carol Baptist Church, was a member and past president of the Atchison Garden Club, a member of the Atchison Hospital Auxiliary, the Beauceants, the Order of the Eastern Star and the Young at Heart Bible Study. She enjoyed raising flowers, sewing, reading and spending time with her family.

She was married to Farris W. Cooley on May 16, 1930 in Maysville, MO. Mr. Cooley preceded her in death on Sept. 26, 1979. Her parents, a son; Farris William Cooley, Jr., and a brother; Arthur Dunsmore also preceded her in death. Survivors include a daughter; Diana Brown, Atchison, KS., four grandchildren, two step grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Samuel L. "Bud" Coy , 86, Atchison, Kansas died Wednesday, October 1st, 2008 at his home.

Funeral services will be held at 11:30 AM on Saturday, October 4th at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, with Fr. Gerard Senecal, OSB, officiating. Mr. Coy will be cremated following the service and private family burial will be at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM on Saturday until time of service at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Samuel Leaman Coy was born on Aug. 12, 1922 in Severance, KS the son of Horace and Dora Mae (Ellis) Coy. He graduated from Severance High School and was a U.S. Army veteran serving as a medic aboard transportation ships during World War II. Mr. Coy owned and operated for five years the Atchison Agency to deliver the Kansas City Star. He later worked as a district manager and finally the country circulation supervisor for Kansas for the Kansas City Star. He retired after 35 years with the paper. Mr. Coy was a Catholic, and lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus, former member of the V.F.W. Post #1175, Atchison, KS and enjoyed going to the casino, sports, reading, westerns, telling stories, and especially his family.

Bud was married to Betty J. Wood on June 23, 1962 in Miami, OK. Mrs. Coy survives of the home. Additional survivors include two sons; John Coy, Atchison, KS and Vernie Lee Coy, Wathena, KS; daughter Traci (Bob) Nolte, Atchison, KS; brother; Paul Coy, Atchison, KS and six grandchildren. His parents and two sisters; Shirley Ellsworth, and Jennie Higgins preceded him in death.

Dale J. Kimmi , 60, Effingham, Kansas died Sunday, Sept. 28th, 2008 at his home.

Graveside services and burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2008, at the Huron Cemetery with Fr. Benjamin Tremmell, O.S.B. officiating. Dale J. Kimmi was born on August 16, 1948 in Horton, Kansas the son of Marvin E. and Rosie (Berger) Kimmi. He graduated from Atchison County Community High School and worked as a laborer, and did scrap iron recycling. He was a U.S. Army veteran and enjoyed hunting, and fishing.

Dale was married to Kay Stirton on May 15, 1997 in Miami, OK. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include: his mother, Rosie Kimmi, Everest, KS., four sons; D.J. (Love) Kimmi, Everest, KS., Jessie Kimmi, Everest, KS., Jason (Diane) Kimmi, Everest, KS., and Aaron Kimmi, of the home, Effingham, KS., two daughters; Cathy (Lee) Gordon, Horton, KS. , and Karen Kimmi, Horton, KS., two step sons; Jason (Fawn) Stirton, Everest, KS., and Dustin (Montie) Hardenberger, Wetmore, KS., a brother, Eugene Kimmi, Everest, KS., a sister, Ruth Anna Wilburn, Atchison, KS., and thirteen grandchildren. His father, and two sisters, Nadine Weinmann, and Marilyn Madden preceded him in death.

Jerry W. Barber ,72, Atchison, KS. died Saturday,Sept. 27th, 2008 at the Atchison Hospital

Jerry was born on Sept. 5, 1936 in Atchison, Kansas the son of Victor W. and Bea (Mayfield) Barber. He graduated from Atchison High School. Mr. Barber had worked for a short time at the former Latenser Music Store, Atchison and the Surritt Automotive. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in Germany. Mr. Barber worked as a farmer and fork lift operator for the former L.F.M, then Rockwell International, and Atchison Casting, of Atchison for forty-five years. He was a former member of the Carol Baptist Church, and enjoyed antique tractors, Country & Gospel music, and his nieces and nephews.

Survivors include a brother: John J. Barber, Atchison, KS., three sisters; Mrs. Ruth Theesfeld, and Mrs. Mary Ann Gripe, both of Atchison, KS, and Betty Gage, Potter, KS., and several nieces,nephews and great nieces and great nephews.. His parents and a brother David Barber preceded him in death.

Marvin Arthur Sumner, 81, Lancaster, died, Wednesday, September 24, 2008 at his home.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM Saturday, September 27, 2008 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Marvin was born October 27, 1926 in Farmington, KS the son of the late Arthur and Ruth (Dorrsom) Sumner. He graduated from ACCHS in 1944 and joined the Army in 1954 where he served in Germany. He was a Distillery Foreman for Midwest Grain Product retiring after 35 years. Mr. Sumner was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post # 6, Lancaster Volunteer Fireman and was Secretary/Treasurer of the Lancaster Fire Board. Marvin bowled for the Midwest bowling team for a number of years and enjoyed MWSU Women’s volleyball and Basketball and was an avid K-State fan. Mr. Sumner’s real passion was farming and raising cattle.

Marvin married Genevieve Huffman June 9, 1950 in Atchison, who survives of the home. Additional survivors include two daughters; Pam Sumner, St. Marys, KS and Sharon and her husband Kim McEvoy, Leavenworth and one grandson; Sean Sumner McEvoy, a sister Ruth Evelyn Bindel, Kansas City, MO and numerous nieces and nephews.

Lawrence Whaley,89, passed away quietly September 20th in Colton, CA.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, September 27th from 1-3pm at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home in Atchison. Following is a Graveside Service at 3:30pm at the Evergreen Cemetery, Effingham, KS. Donations in lieu of flowers are asked to be sent to a Nursing Home of your choice.

He was an Effingham farmer for 35 years, truck driver for Blair’s in Atchison, and moved to California in 2002. He was a member of Effingham First Christian Church.

He is survived by a son Willard (Sharon) Whaley and step-daughter Debra Francia; Grandchildren Rebecca, Cynthini, Terry and Traci; and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by parents, William and Annie; wives Gladys of 46 years and Joanna of 13 years; and a son Earl.

Mia Brooklyn Fitzwater, daughter of Isaiah Fitzwater and Rachel Aaron, died shortly after birth on Wednesday, September 17, 2008 at the Atchison Hospital.

Stanley W. Kuykendall, 73, of Effingham, KS passed away Saturday, August 30, 2008 at Medicalodge in Atchison.

Stanley was born on October 18, 1934 in Seneca, KS the son of the late Jesse Kuykendall and Eva Garlock James. He attended school in Goff, KS. Mr. Kuykendall served in the United States Navy for 4 years and later worked as a Machine operator for Atchison Casting for 43 years where he was a member of the Steel Workers Union #6943. He was also a member of the V.F.W. and the American Legion and past member of the Effingham Christian Church. Mr. Kuykendall was the caretaker of the Atchison County Lake for many years. Stanley enjoyed fishing, camping, gardening, and especially his grandchildren.

He married Sharon Rasdall on July 11, 1959 in Effingham, KS, she survives of the home. Additional survivors include his two sons; Kevin Kuykendall and Brian and Gina Kuykendall, both of Effingham, two daughters; Lori and Mark Hurst, Effingham, Janet Corning, Atchison, 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brother Jesse Kuykendall, Jr. and a daughter-in-law, Bobbi Kuykendall.

Hazel Leona (Parrott) McKanna, 92, of Nortonville, KS, passed away Sunday, August 25, 2008 at her daughter’s home in rural Nortonville.

Funeral services will be 3:00 pm, Saturday, August 30, at the Cummings Christian Church with Rev. Gary Patterson and Rev. David Atzenweiler, officiating. Hazel was born on May 3, 1916 at Rushville, MO, the daughter of Lee Otis and Amanda (Barton) Parrott. She moved with her family to the Cummings, KS, community at the age of 8. She married Marcus E. McKanna on August 24, 1937 in Cummings and they farmed in the area for many years. Hazel and Mack moved to Colorado in 1958 and lived there until Mack’s death in 1973. Hazel moved back to Kansas and worked for several years at the Mop Factory in Atchison. Hazel loved to sew, gardening and can. She was a very good cook and loved having her family around her. Hazel was a very active member of the Cummings Christian Church.

Hazel is survived by her children, Anna L. Atzenweiler, Nortonville, KS, Leona (Roger) Bakel , Longmont, CO, Dale (Kathryn) McKanna, Burlingame, KS; ten grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren; a brother, Charles (Eula) Parrott, Rushville, MO; a sister, Edith (Bob) Lewman, Cummings, KS.

She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; brother, Morgan Parrott; and one great granddaughter, Jessica McKanna

Joe L. Bailey , 81 years of age, of Rushville, Mo formerly of Topeka, KS. died Monday, August 25, 2008 at his residence in Rushville.

Joe was born on July 2, 1927 in Buffalo, MO, the son of Willie A. and Mary (Moad) Bailey. Joe worked for Safeway Bakery for 10 years, and then he and his wife Lois owned and operated a café called “Bailey’s Café, in Omaha, NE. They moved to Topeka, KS. and he worked for the street department as a mechanic for 21years. After he retired they moved to Gilman City, Mo and lived there for 10 years, they moved to Rushville in 2004. He enjoyed woodworking, crafts, mechanic work and especially his family, children, and grandchildren.

Mr. Bailey was married to Lois Irene Tucker on March 9, 1957. Mrs. Bailey survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son, Timothy Joe Bailey, Kansas City, MO., two daughters, Diana R. Logan, and Joyce Bailey, both of Topeka, KS., a sister, Ruby Hickcock, Buffalo, Mo., fourteen grandchildren and lots of great grandchildren. His parents, a son, Richard Bailey, a daughter, Bonnie Watson, a brother, John Paul Bailey, and a sister, Violet Ruth Lindsay, preceded him in death.

Stanley E. Frost ,77 years of age, of Effingham, KS., died Sunday, August 24, 2008 at the Stormont-Vail Hospital, Topeka, KS.

Stanley was born on July 1, 1931 in Willis, Kansas the son of Jack and Velma (Johnson) Frost. He graduated from high school and had attended mechanical trade school. Mr. Frost was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the Korean War. He worked as an auto mechanic for several dealerships such as Kimmel Chevrolet, Robinson, KS., Ulrich Chevrolet, Horton, KS., and Miller Chevrolet, Atchison, KS.At Page Airways, Atchison, and for Certified Automatic Transmissions. Mr. Frost retired in 1976. He was a member of the St. Ann’s Church, the V.F.W. , the Masonic Lodge # of Robinson, KS.. Mr. Frost was a former Mayor of Effingham and served on the City Commission. He enjoyed gardening and fishing.

Mr. Frost was married to LuAnne Chain on June 30, 1951 at St. Mary’s Church, Purcell, KS. Mrs. Frost survives of the home. Additional survivors include two sons; Phillip (Susie) Frost, Platte City, Mo., Gregory (Melissa) Frost, Lawrence, KS., a daughter, Jacqueline (Dan) Smith, Effingham, KS., Three sisters; Joanne Frost, Cape Girardeau, Mo., Frances Edge, Walton, KY., Nancy Kramer, Missouri, Eleven grandchildren, seventeen grandchildren. His parents, a sister, Joyce Hooper, and one grandson preceded him in death.

Marian R. Gill, 88 of Atchison, passed away Saturday August 23, 2008 at her home.

Marian was born April 3rd, 1920 in DeKalb, MO. the daughter of Edward and Marian (Gerner) Strong. She graduated from DeKalb High School in 1938. She worked as a cook and lived in Indiana from 1974 to 1994. She married Harley Gill in 1952 in Atchison. They were later divorced. She was a former member of the Lewis and Clark Baptist Church, the Sherrers Club, and enjoyed crafts and crossword puzzles.

Mrs. Gill was preceded in death by her parents, former husband, a son Gary Gill, four brothers Earl, Charlie, Frances and Calvin Strong and three sisters, Lorene Lynch, Tessie Fridell and Fern Durkin. Survivors include two sons, Kevin and Michael Gill of Atchison, and many nieces and nephews.

Janet I. Lentz,75 of Easton, KS. formerly of Winchester, KS. died Thursday, August 21,2008 at the Country Care Nursing Home, Easton, KS.

Janet Irene Moberly was born on Oct. 13, 1932 in Umfrey, Missouri the daughter of Leon and Roberta E. (Sigler) Moberly. She was a homemaker and housewife for most of her life. She was a member of the New Testament Christian Church, Winchester, KS., and a member of the ladies aid of the church. Janet enjoyed cooking, gardening, and quilting.

She was married to James Albert Lentz on April 1, 1956 in Leavenworth, KS. Mr. Lentz preceded her in death on July 17, 2005. Her parents and grandchild also preceded her in death. Survivors include three sons; James (Sue) Lentz, Dodge City, KS., Richard Lentz, and Keith Lentz, both of Winchester, KS., two daughters; Donieta (Rick) McVay, Meriden, KS., and Becky (Steve) Belveal, Nortonville, KS., two sisters; Sue Clark, Lawrence, KS., and Jo Ellen Lean, Humansville, MO., twenty grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Howard Wayne Shell, 72, of Fallbrook, CA, passed away Monday, August 18, 2008 in Carlsbad, CA.

Graveside services will be 11:00 AM Friday, August 29, 2008 at the Evergreen Cemetery, Effingham, KS. A visitation is being held in Fallbrook, CA on Saturday, August 23, 2008 from 3:00-7:00 PM at the Berry-Bell & Hall Mortuary. Howard was born on February 21, 1936 in Effingham, KS the son of the late Todd and Helen (Lewis) Shell. He received his bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from California State University, Los Angeles. Mr. Shell was employed by the Hughes Missile Group. In his spare time, Howard enjoyed farming and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife of 44 years, Inger-Lise Shell, of the home in Fallbrook, three sons; John Shell, Ft. Lee, NJ, Glenn & Heidi Shell, Pasedena, MD, and Lyle Shell, Reseda, CA, a brother; Kent & Darla Shell, Fallbrook, CA, and a grandson; Christian Schroeder, Georgetown, TX.

Frank DeRossi, 90, of Atchison, KS, passed away Saturday, August 16, 2008 at the Atchison Hospital.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am, Tuesday, August 19, 2008 at St. Benedict’s Church, Atchison, with Fr. Gerard Senecal, OSB, as celebrant. Burial will follow in Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Atchison, next to his beloved wife, Alice. A rosary will be recited at 7:00 pm, Monday, with visitation to follow until 8:30 pm, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison. Memorial contributions in memory of Mr. DeRossi are suggested to Catholic Charities or Christian Foundation for Children and Aging and may be left in care of the funeral home. Frank, Franco to family and friends, was born in Rieti, Italy, on January 1, 1918, the son of Ercole and Lavinia (Dionisi) DeRossi. He attended the University of Rome, graduating with a teacher’s degree. He was drafted into the Italian Army during WWII, sent to Africa and eventually was captured as a prisoner of war by the U.S. 5th Army in Tunisia. He was brought to the United States as a P.O.W. in April 1942.

After the collapse of the Mussolini Regime, Italian P.O.W.’s in the United States camps were offered the opportunity to join the newly formed Italian Service Units. Those Units were employed by the U.S. Army providing services to Army or Navy bases and there, participated in the war against the Nazis. Frank met his future wife, Alice Schott, who also was working at the same base in Norfolk, VA, in the service of the U.S. Army. They fell in love and promised to each other for life. They kept their faith, and soon after the war ended Alice joined Frank in Italy where they were married on June 24, 1946. They lived in Italy for one year and then decided to move to the United States when it seemed very possible that Italy could become a Communist State. They settled in Zion, Illinois, Alice’s hometown. Frank started working for the Dexter Corporation, doing research and development work in their laboratory. He worked for the same company for almost 40 years and retired in 1987, having reached the position of Staff Scientist.

Frank and Alice moved to the Kansas City area in 1990 in order to live close to their son, John and his family. When John transferred to Atchison for reason of employment, Frank and Alice also moved to Atchison. Alice died after a brief illness in February 2004. Frank enjoyed gardening, golfing, and listening to classical music, especially Opera. Frank was also an avid Bridge player and continued playing in spite of poor eyesight, which made it difficult to see the cards.

Frank was a member of St. Benedict’s Catholic Church, Atchison.

Survivors include two sons, John (Sherry) De Rossi of Atchsion, Michael (Linda) De Rossi of Lindenhurst, IL; three daughters, Sr. Julian De Rossi of Annapolis, CA, Rosanne (John) Millhouse of Grand Rapids, MI, and Anita (Ronald) Delph of Ann Harbor, MI; one sister, Lina Specchia of Italy; eleven grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren.

Frank was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings.

Sarah was born May 25, 1925 in Halls, MO the daughter of William F. and Doris Dean (Robertson) Henman. She graduated from Benton High School, St. Joseph, MO, in 1942. She married Billy B. Purdy on February 23, 1946 in Atchison, KS. Sarah was a member of the First Christian Church’s Christian Women’s Fellowship, American Legion Auxiliary, Pioneers of America and the Alpha Aletha Club which originated from Benton High School. She was a Worthy Matron and a Past Matron of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Purdy enjoyed cooking and baking for her family and playing bridge and poker. Sarah’s greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons; Mike & Sophie Purdy, Bellevue, NE, Stan & Suzy Purdy, Atchison, KS, grandchildren; Stephanie Kuenning, Matt Purdy, Mickey, Casey, Sadie, Roger and Andy Purdy and 5 great granchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy and a sister Dora Dean Hoerath.

Esther L. Chalfant, 78 years of age, of Everest, KS., died Saturday, August 09, 2008 at the Horton Hospital, Horton, KS.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Tuesday, August 12th, 2008 at the Lancaster United Methodist Church with Rev. Karen Jeffcoat officiating. Esther was born on April 16, 1930 in Horton, Kansas the daughter of LeRoy and Ruth (Bollen) Speer. She taught grade school for a short time after graduating . She was a housewife and homemaker for most of her life. Mrs. Chalfant was a member of the Lancaster United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, the ladies circle of the church. She was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, the Old Huron Memorial Club and was a volunteer for the Atchison Hospital Hospice. She enjoyed her children and grandchildren, sewing, crafts, raising flowers, playing the piano, gardening and canning.

She was married to Lester Chalfant on July 23, 1950 in Horton, KS. Mr. Chalfant survives of the home in Everest. Additional survivors include four sons; Wayne (Anita) Chalfant, Everest, KS., Carl (Vickie) Chalfant, McLouth, KS., Bruce (Judy) Chalfant, Everest, KS., and John (Sheila) Chalfant, Lancaster, KS., two daughters; Lois (Ted) Gibbs, San Antonio, TX., and Rita (Matt) Cross, Lancaster, KS., fifteen grandchildren, four step grandchildren, and seventeen great grandchildren. Her parents, and a brother; Willis Speer preceded her in death.

Leona A. Wehrle ,99 years of age, passed away on Thursday, Aug.7th, 2008 just 3 months shy of her 100th birthday.

Leona was born on Nov. 14th, 1908 in Nortonville, Ks. the daughter of John and Catherine (Noll) Didde. She graduated from the Mt. St. Scholastica College and taught school for a short time. She was a beautician and had owned and operated her own beauty shop. Mrs. Wehrle was a member of the Corpus Christi Church, Lawrence, KS. and the Retired Military Officers Wives Association. Leona led a full life, living and traveling in Europe and the United States. She will be greatly missed by all who were privileged to know her. She had a deep and abiding faith that strengthened her in times of hardships and yet gave her a kind and gentle spirit.

She was married to Col (Ret.) Awtry Porter Wehrle in 1936. Mr. Wehrle preceded her in death in Nov. 1974. Her parents, three sisters; Clara Schmidt, Gertrude Schneider, and Bernadette Johnson, and two brothers; Bernard and John Didde also preceded her in death. She is survived by a son, Allan Wehrle of Lawrence Ks., his wife Janet and their daughters Sarah and Eva also of Lawrence; a daughter Ann Robison of Wasilla Alaska, her husband Jeff and their daughters Analisa and Aubrey; brothers Carl Didde, Emporia, KS., Eddie Didde, Kansas City, MO., and sister Doris Foster, Hoyt, KS. as well as many nieces and nephews.

Robert N. Herricks ,died on July 25, 2008 at the age of 93. A Scripture Service will be held August 6 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Leo’s Catholic Church, Horton, KS with visitation following from 7:30 to 8:30. Mass of Christian Burial will be August 7 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Leo’s with Fr. Earl Dekat presiding. Interment with full military honors will follow at the National Cemetery in Leavenworth, KS at 2:30 p.m. Donations can be made in Bob's name to the Knights of Columbus or the charity of your choice.

Bob was born on November 26, 1914 in Langdon, ND to Frederick Herricks and Margaret Thielan. His father succumbed to influenza and his mother then married Edwin Leibers. Bob’s siblings included brothers William Herricks and Edwin Leibers (both deceased) and sisters Adeline Porth and Dolores Parmalee who survive. He married Frances Mary Loob of Axtell, KS in 1942. They had four children, Clifton Robert, Edwin Eugene, James Michael, and Elizabeth Allyn Landau.

Bob spent his early years in Wales, ND then moved to Mundelein, IL. He joined the U.S. Army, attended Officer Candidate School and served with distinction in Europe during World War II, receiving a Bronze Star among other decorations. After World War II, he attended formal flight school and earned his Army Aviator Wings. He is a charter member of the Army Aviation Association. His duties included service in Germany and Korea and he provided flight support for atomic testing in Nevada and geodetic survey activities in Alaska. He retired from the Army in 1960, moving to Belleville, IL where he was a civilian employee of the government at the Army Material Command in St. Louis. He was a project development officer on the OV-1 Mohawk Aircraft and the Light Observation Helicopter OH-6 (LOH). Following his second retirement, he moved to Everest, KS in 1975, where he was active in The Knights of Columbus, The Benevolent Protective Order of Elks, American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign War. Bob is survived by his by his wife, four children, six grand children, five great grandchildren and numerous members of the community who knew and admired him.

Jerry W. Hicks ,64 years of age, of Atchison, KS., died Tuesday, August 5, 2008 at his home.

The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 4:00 pm on Saturday, August. 9th, 2008 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. The body has been cremated and no services will be held. Mr. Hicks was born on January 22, 1944 in Atchison, KS., the son of J.N. and Letha (Stull) Hicks. He attended grade school in Atchison and graduated from Atchison High School. Mr. Hicks had attended the Atchison VO Technical School before earning an associate degree from Highland Community College. He also attended Kansas State University, and Benedictine College. Mr. Hicks had worked for 38 years for the former Rockwell International and Atchison Casting as a tool designer engineer, before retiring in 1999. He later taught computer aided drafting at the Northeast Kansas Technical College for 3 years. Mr. Hicks was a U.S. Air Force veteran, a former member of the American Legion Post # 6, Atchison. He was a member of the Time Out Coffee Club, the 401 Club, had served on the Northeast Kansas Technical College Computer Drafting Board and was the project liaison between the City of Atchison and the Architecturing Firm for the Atchison River Front Project. Mr. Hicks enjoyed his grandchildren, yard work, reading, going to the casino, word puzzles and his cat Mocha.

Mr. Hicks was married to Lois (Graner) Petersen on Oct. 23, 1964 in Great Falls, Montana. They were later divorced. He was married to Marguerite Scaturro on Aug. 22, 1986. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include his mother; Mrs. Letha (Hicks) Borders, Atchison, two daughters; Kelli (Hicks) and her husband Jeff Baker, Atchison, KS., and Kelly Ayers, and fiancé (Matt Yarmer), Atchison, KS. a brother; Dudley Hicks, Lee's Summit, Mo., two sisters; Freda Thompson, and Sharon Peltzer, both of Atchison, KS., and six grandchildren; Megan Baker, Micaela Baker, Macey Baker, Cameron Ayers, Alexander Ayers, and Jenna Yarmer, all of Atchison. His father, J.N. Hicks and one granddaughter, Jessica Nicole Baker, preceded him in death.

She moved to Atchison after high school with her family. She was married to Manuel Ramirez on June 5, 1937 at St. Benedicts Church, Atchison. He preceded her in death on Sept. 3, 1975. She was a housewife and homemaker. Mrs. Ramirez moved with her daughter and son-in-law to Texas in 1985, and was presently living with them in Kansas City. She was a member of the St. Patrick’s Church in Kansas City, Mo. and enjoyed gardening, crocheting, needlework and reading.

Her parents and four brothers also preceded her in death. Survivors include two daughters; Dolores Burnside, Tri-cities, WA, and Rosemary(Jesse) Gonzales, Kansas City, MO., a sister; Mrs. Vincenta Magure, Albuquerque, NM. and several nieces and nephews.

Harriet Ann Sharp was born on September 19, 1922 at Burlington Junction, MO, the daughter of Earl F. and Anna Belle (Cornell) Sharp. Harriet and Glen Reid were married on July 11, 1942 in Atchison. Together they owned and operated Reid Auto Service in Atchison for many years, until Glen retired in 1981. Glen preceded Harriet in death on September 16, 2007. She was also preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Rosella (Sharp) Niemann.

Harriet was a member of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Nortonville, and she enjoyed sewing, quilting, cooking, and especially her grandchildren.

Harriet is survived by three children and their spouses, Janet and Robert Straub of Topeka; Steve and Angie (Blakely) Reid of Newton; Phil and Debra (Gorrell) Reid of Basehor, KS; one sister, Dorothy (Sharp) Moore of Lynden, WA; sister-in-law, Ruth (Reid) Summers of Wheatland, MO; five grandchildren and their spouses: Kelly (Tosh) and Bryan Christensen; Clint and Johnni Tosh; Jennie (Reid) and Shawn Bertus; Becky (Reid) and Mike Starcher; and Phillip and Jayne Reid; nine great-grandchildren.

Margaret was born on November 8, 1920, in St. Joseph, MO, the daughter of Glen B. and Rosa T. (Schuety) Riddle. She graduated from LaFayette High School in St. Joseph, MO. Margaret worked as a bookkeeper for Mt. St. Scholastica and Benedictine College for thirty years. She retired on Dec. 31, 1994. Margaret was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Altar Society and Choir; American Legion and VFW Auxiliaries; Daughter’s of Isabella, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority and St. Matthew Circle. Margaret enjoyed bowling, needlework, traveling and especially her family.

Margaret and Fred W. Clark were married on August 20, 1947 at St. Joseph’s Church in Atchison. Fred preceded her in death on June 28, 1999. She was also preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Lawrence Riddle.

Margaret is survived by two sons, Thomas Clark and his wife, Becky, of Independence, MO and Joseph ‘Tony’ Clark and his wife, Cindy, of Shawnee, KS; four grandchildren; six great grandchildren.

Boyd E. 'Newt' Reynolds ,84, passed away Friday, August 1, 2008, at his home surrounded by family.

Newt was born on September 3, 1923 in Parthenon, Arkansas the son of George Franklin and Thursey (Madewell) Reynolds. He attended Sumner Grade School and graduated from Atchison High School in 1942. Mr. Reynolds worked for the Mangelsdorf Seed Co. in Atchison and then was a Weigh Master for Lincoln Grain until his retirement in 1988. He served on the Walnut Township Fire Dept. and Rural Water District #1. Newt also assisted the Walnut Township road crew. He enjoyed squirrel hunting, gardening, riding four wheelers, feeding fish in his pond and especially his granddaughters.

Newt married Mary Ellen Pierce on March 12, 1954, she survives of the home. Additional survivors include his daughter, Mary Jane Sowers and her husband, Phil, of Atchison, and two granddaughters, Melissa and Laura Sowers, Atchison.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Clarence, and two sisters, Berdie Ehret and Berth Hurst.

Marcelene Trainer,71, of the Mooney Creek Community, and a former longtime Atchison resident, passed away Thursday, July 31, 2008 at her home.

Marcelene was born October 31, 1936, in Mooney Creek, to Alvera E. (Schrick) and August A. Noll. She attended Oak Grove grade school in Mooney Creek and graduated from Mt. St. Scholastica Academy in 1954. She remained a resident of Atchison for more than 35 years, until she moved back to Mooney Creek in 1992.

Marcelene made taking care of others her life’s work. For years she was a caring childcare provider for many children in the Atchison area. She was deeply devoted to her family and her faith. She always found joy in the simple things in life, including cooking, gardening, and tending to her large menagerie of animals.

On December 16, 1983, Marcelene was married to Clarence ‘Bud’ Trainer in Atchison. He survives of the home. Other survivors include six sons: Steve (Robin) Crossland, Overland Park, Michael Crossland, Atchison, Jay Crossland, Tonganoxie, Charles (Ronda) Crossland, Atchison, Clarence Trainer, stationed with the US Marines at Camp Pendleton, CA, and Justin Trainer of the home; one daughter, Lynn (Jesse) Graddick, Daphine, AL; one stepson, Gordon Trainer, Atchison; three stepdaughters, Jenny (Robert) Page, Boyle, Samantha (Joseph) Cherrito, Kansas City, MO, and Kelly Dyer, Atchison; four brothers, Merle Noll, Savannah, MO, Charles Noll, Nortonville, Daryl Noll, New Orleans, LA, and Richard Noll, Leavenworth; two sisters, Joyce Gipple, Trinidad, CO and Glenda Moffatt, Wellington, FL; grandchildren and step-grandchildren, Kara, Joshua, Alex, Matthew, Mary Elizabeth, Gwendolyn, Emily, Jacob, Jensen, Kimble, Erica, Roman, Robbie, Shari, Danielle, Dalton, Joey, Aspen, Devin and Ashley; great grandchildren, Adriana, Parker, and Fiona; many nieces and nephews.

Charlotte Louise Weber was born on Feb. 14, 1930 in Horton, KS., the daughter of Albert and Dorothy Ruth (Hillyer) Weber. She grew up in the Brush Creek and Muscotah, KS. area. She was married to Wallace E. Pike on Sept. 25, 1949 at the Muscotah Church, Muscotah, KS. Charlotte worked as dairy and farm wife. She was a member of the Camp Creek United Methodist Church, the United Methodist Women, and was a 4-H Sewing Leader. Mrs. Pike enjoyed sewing, quilting, embroidery, crocheting and gardening. She especially enjoyed visiting with neighbors, friends and family.

Survivors include two sons; Gary (Mary Alice) Pike, Costa Mesa, CA, and Jim Pike, Lancaster, KS., a daughter; Debbie (J.R.) Adcock, Hiawatha, KS., a brother; Robert Weber, Neponset, Ill., four grandchildren, and two great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Darlene Mae Collins was born on July 2, 1937 in Atchison, KS. the daughter of John J. and Edwynne (Shay) Collins. She graduated from the Atchison High School in 1955, where she participated in Pep Club, “A” Club and Kayettes. She carried oak leaves and continued to be involved on the AHS Golden Grads Committee until her death. Darlene was employed by Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for many years, where she worked as a switchboard operator. Later, she worked through the Leavenworth and Atchison Travel agencies. Darlene was a loving mother, grandmother and extraordinary friend. She enjoyed sewing, baking, and spending time with her family. Darlene was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, the Atchison Hospital Auxiliary, the Atchison County Livestock Board, the Atchison County Extension Unit, and was a former 4H leader.

She was married to LeRoy Servaes on Nov. 5, 1955 at Trinity Lutheran Church, and were married for 52 years. Mr. Servaes survives of the home. Additional survivors include two sons; Steven J. (Lois) Servaes, Atchison, KS. and Mark (Diana) Servaes, Atchison, KS., two daughters; Deborah (Sarju) Jackson, Atchison, KS., and Lisa (Robert) Chalfant, Elwood, KS., a brother, Jerry (Josie) Collins, Davenport, IA., eight grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.

Ruth Mildred Gilliland, wife of Wilbur H.Gilliland, who preceded her in death, passed away on July 25th, 2008 in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, at the young age of 88 years.

Ruth and Wilbur were active members of the First Christian Church in Atchison. Mrs. Gilliland enjoyed traveling, music, animals and especially her grandchildren.

Stillings and his wife Bonnie of Glenwood Springs, Colorado, daughter Nita Workman of Holton, Kansas, good friend Judi Fridell of Rushville, Missouri, grandchildren Lori VanHouten and her husband Lloyd of Gardner, Kansas, Kena Drinkwater of Stillwell, Kansas.,Brian Stillings and his wife Cher of Wichita, Kansas, Brandie Nielson and her husband Mike of Rifle, Colorado, David Matthews and his wife Lisa of Mayetta, Kansas, Curtis Matthews and his wife Jamie of Salina, Kansas, Doug Fridell and his wife Jennie of Atchison, Kansas, Marta Myers and her husband David of Atchison, Kansas, and 27 great grandchildren.

Mary Theresa Haverkamp was born on January 6, 1925 in Kelly, KS. the daughter of Clement L. and Catherine Mary (Hoefler) Haverkamp. She graduated from the Atchison County Community High School in Effingham in 1942. She worked at the Atchison Soil Conservation Service office from 1942 to 1945. Later in the 1960’s she worked again for a few years at the ASCS office in Oskaloosa, KS. Mary was a member of the Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Mooney Creek, and a member of the Altar Society. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, and especially quilting. She moved to the Mooney Creek Community in northeast Jefferson County in the spring of 1948.

She was married to Paul Francis Lemke on April 25, 1945 at the St. Ann’s Church, Effingham, KS. Mr. Lemke survives of the home. Additional survivors include: two daughters; Paulette (Kenneth R.) Schrick, Atchison, KS., and Connie (Wayne Edwin) Hale, Atchison, KS., four sisters; Mildred Kelly, Effingham, KS., Lucy (Leonard) Weber, Kansas City, MO., Evelyn Jamvold, San Antonio, TX., and Gladys (Elwyn) Carr, Topeka, KS., a daughter in- law; Joan Lemke, Atchison, KS., two sister-in-laws; Frances Haverkamp, Atchison, KS., and Mary Beth Lemke, Leavenworth, KS., a brother in law; Gilbert Lemke, Atchison, KS., seven grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Her parents, a son, Alan L. Lemke (Oct. 1993),a brother, Verniss Haverkamp, a half brother,Albert Haverkamp, and two sisters; Alice Ann and Elizabeth(Betty Lou) Haverkamp, all preceded her in death.

Howard E. Wentz,69 years of age, of Atchison died Wednesday July 23rd, 2008 at the Atchison Hospital.

Mr. Wentz was born January 19, 1939 in Downs, KS, the son of Ralph and Mary (Thummel) Wentz. He served in the US Navy from 1960 to 1965. He owned and operated Atchison Taxi Service for 21 years. He enjoyed gardening, reading and playing cards.

Howard was married to Carol Rivers April 24th, 1965 in Atchison, KS. They lived in Atchison for over 40 years. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include three brothers, Max Wentz of Atchison, Marvin (Cindy) Wentz, Girard, KS and Raymond Wentz of Arizona. A sister Cecelia Wilcox of Nortonville and many nieces and nephews. His parents, a brother; Mark Wentz, and a sister; Josephine Rivers preceded him in death.

Richard L. Haupt, 69, of Pharr, TX, passed away at Rio Grande Regional Hospital in McAllen, TX, on July 9, 2008.

James T. Drinkard, 84, of Nortonville, KS died Wednesday, July 23rd, 2008 at his home.

Mr. Drinkard was born on February 28, 1924 in Trenton, MO, the son of Richard Lee and Ruth Keith(Fauver) Drinkard. He served in the U.S. Army as a switchboard operator during World War II. Mr. Drinkard had worked for the former Missouri Valley Steel Company, We-Mac Manufacturing, and as a welder for the railroad car repair department of Lincoln Grain, Atchison, KS. He was a life member of the VFW Post #1175, Atchison, KS, and enjoyed horses, and old traditional farming using horse drawn teams.

James was married to Betty Snyder on April 22, 1943 in Galion, Ohio. They lived in rural Nortonville, KS for over 39 years. She survives of the home. Bethel Hale, 89, of Atchison, passed away Sunday, July 20, 2008 at the Atchison Senior Village.

Bethel was born on March 28, 1919 in Atchison, KS the daughter of Hume P. and Irene (Lindsay) Buchanan. She graduated from Atchison High School in 1937. Bethel belonged to the Business Professional Women, Modern Builders Class, Eastern Star, White Shrine, and the Historical Society. She was a Sunday school teacher at the First Christian Church for over 25 years and a 30-year member of the choir. Mrs. Hale enjoyed playing the piano and organ.

She married Orean Bart Hale on September 12, 1937 in Atchison, KS. He preceded her in death on May 2, 1998.

Survivors include two sons, Wayne and his wife Shirley Hale, Atchison and Wendell and his wife Nila Hale, Savannah, MO, 5 grandchildren; Tammy Parrott, Rod Hale, Amy Oswalt, all of Atchison, Shawn Hale, Kansas City, MO, Chris Hale, Savannah, MO and 9 great-grandchildren.

John J. Gerardy, Jr., 66, lifelong Atchison resident, passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2008 at the Medicalodge of Leavenworth, Leavenworth, KS.

John, Jr. was born March 1, 1942 in Atchison, the son of John and Ruby Marie (Olsen) Gerardy. John graduated from Atchison High School. John and his father worked together for many years at the Gerardy Machine Shop in Atchison, where they manufactured replacement machine parts for farm implements. He later worked in the maintenance department for the Smurfit-Stone Container Company in St. Joseph, MO. John was a member of the Atchison United Methodist Church, and had previously been a member of the Atchison Riverbend Promenader’s square dance club. John enjoyed remote control cars and airplanes; and working on motorcycles. John was very mechanically inclined and could fix almost anything.

Survivors include one daughter, Jeannette Gerardy, Atchison; one son, Tim Gerardy, Lancaster, KS; his mother, Ruby Gerardy, Atchison; one sister, Patricia Finnerty, Ft. Collins, CO; and nine grandchildren.

James Barnett, Sr., 82, of Atchison, passed away Saturday, July 5, 2008, at the Clare Bridge Care Center in Topeka, KS.

James was born on March 2, 1926 in Atchison the son of the Odie and Grace (Tipling) Barnett. Once he graduated from high school he joined the Army. He was one of two survivors of the original 56 demolition specialists in World War II in Europe. James had worked as an architect for Fort Leavenworth Dept. of Civilian Architects for a number of years. He was also a real estate entrepreneur and an author.

Mr. Barnett married Wanda Church on March 10, 1947, at the Trinity Episcopal Church in Atchison, she preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by a son, James Barnett, Jr., a daughter, Pam Barnett, and a brother, Bill Barnett.

Survivors include a brother, Tom Barnett, Atchison, KS, six grandchildren, Jacob Clearwater, Whitney Clearwater, both of Lawrence, Mia Barnett, Dallas, TX, Jesse Barnett, Arlington, TX, Kelly Kauffman and Brent Gordon, both of Topeka; a great-granddaughter, Catherine Kauffman, and a great-grandson, Presley Gordon.

Homer was born on January 6, 1931 at Oak Mills, KS, the son of Charles Roy and Hazel Victoria (Inman) Bowen. He attended schools at Atchison. Homer and Beulah ‘Boots’ Harden were united in marriage on June 3, 1951 at the Carol Baptist Church in Atchison. They have lived in Parkville, MO for the past 43 years. Homer worked as a laborer for CertainTeed Fiberglass Company in Fairfax, MO. He enjoyed throwing horseshoes; working on cars, lawnmowers and tractors; and he especially loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Laurence was born on Sept. 6, 1925 in Effingham, KS the son of the late Ernest B. and Margaret M.(Burg) Falk. He had attended the Sunny Hill School, the St. Ann’s Catholic School, and the Atchison County Community High School all of Effingham, KS. Mr. Falk worked as a truck driver for many years and as a farmer for most of his life. He retired in 1979, but continued to live on the farm until illness recently forced his move to Medicalodge. He was a member of the St. Ann’s Church, and enjoyed gardening and fishing.

He was married to Lillian Grace (Bindel) on June 22, 1948 at St. Benedict’s Church, Atchison. Mrs. Falk preceded him in death on June 8, 2007. Survivors include three daughters; Elizabeth (Calvin) Page, Holton, KS, Ruth (Raymond) Acheson, Effingham, KS, and Helen (R.Dean) Dickson, Bendena, KS, three sisters; Marjorie (Donald) Handke, Huron, KS, Mary (Eugene) Handke, Atchison, KS, and Irene (Emmett) Becker, Robinson, KS, Nine Grandchildren and twenty Great Grandchildren.

Helga was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church and the SALT group of the church. She also enjoyed gardening.

Helen B. Goodloe was born on October 8, 1916 in Akron, CO., the daughter of William T. and Hattie G.(Taylor) Goodloe. She moved to DeKalb, Mo. in 1933. She graduated from DeKalb High School in 1934. Helen worked as a fur cutter and seamstress at the former Keller Furriers in St. Joseph, MO., prior to her marriage to Harold L.E. Frakes on March 7, 1942 making Atchison KS., their life long home. Mr. Frakes preceded her in death on Oct. 13, 1992. Mrs. Frakes was a member of the Atchison United Methodist Church, and enjoyed church work, and volunteering. She was an accomplished crafter, making pinecone wreaths, candles, and enjoyed gardening and raising flowers.

Survivors include two sons; Larry L. Frakes, Bailey, CO., and Marlin E.(Susan) Frakes, Littleton, CO., Grandchildren; Steven L. Frakes, Valencia, CA., Marlin E. Melvin E. Besette, Sr. , 93, of Atchison, KS, passed away Sunday, June 22, 2008 at the Lighthouse Guest House in Atchison.

Melvin was born August 15, 1914 in Saskatchewan, Canada, the son of Clarence G. and Barbara (Van Doren) Besette. They lived in South Dakota before moving to Atchison around 1924. Melvin had been a plant superintendent and later Vice-President for the former Midwest Solvents, later Midwest Grain Products (MGP) of Atchison. He retired from MGP after 43 years of service in 1985. Melvin built the Melrose Motel in 1959 in Atchison and he and his wife, Ruth, operated it for five years; he also owned and operated Besette Motors for 35 years. He was a past member of the Atchison Masonic Lodge, founding member of the Sumner Saddle Club and enjoyed remodeling houses, restoring antique cars and deer hunting.

Melvin and Ruth E. Trainer were united in marriage on May 4, 1935 in Atchison. She preceded in death on October 8, 2004. Melvin is also preceded in death by his parents; one son, Melvin D. Besette; two brothers, Ernest and Donald Besette; three sisters, Hazel Hodge, Ruth Jenkins, and Della Slusser.

Survivors include three daughters, Roberta (Phil) Wolters, Atchison, Barbara (Steve) Bartels and Tina (Bill) Martin, both of Pekin, IL; one son, Michael (Nichole) Besette, Atkinson, IL; eleven grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren.

Melvin A. Oxley, 84, Muscotah, KS, passed away Thursday, June 19, 2008 at his home surrounded by family and friends.

Melvin was born June 1, 1924 the son of James Henry and Zoba Ellen (Muncie) Oxley in Atchison, KS. He had worked for the Missouri Pacific Railroad and then the Santa Fe Railroad before retiring in 1973. Melvin was an outdoorsman who enjoyed metal detecting, gardening and mushroom hunting. He especially cherished his time with his children and grandchildren.

Mr. Oxley married Ruth Jones on July 21, 1944 in Atchison, she survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son; Melvin J.F. Oxley, Muscotah, KS, three daughters; Mary and Richard Brooks, Topeka, KS, Linda Oxley, Muscotah, KS, Carolyn Koch, Topeka, KS, two brothers; Benjamin Oxley, Kansas City, MO, Charles Oxley, Horton, KS, 12 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.

Dorothy was born September 24, 1917 in Climbing Hill, IA the daughter of Charles and Clara (Smith) Link. She graduated from high school in Iowa. Dorothy was a member of the Carol Baptist Church and the church’s Bible Study Group. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Dorothy married Carl Boyer on June 11, 1936 in South Dakota, he survives of the home. Additional survivors include two sons; Rollie and Brenda Boyer, Atchison and John and Deborah Boyer, St. Charles, MO, a brother; Dale Link, Nevada, IA, 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Carl J. Noll, 84 years of age, of Nortonville, KS died Sunday, June 15, 2008 at the Village Villa Nursing Home, Nortonville, KS.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 AM on Wednesday, June 18th, 2008 at Corpus Christi Church, Mooney Creek with Fr. John Reynolds as Celebrant. Burial will follow in the Corpus Christi Cemetery. Mr. Noll was born on August 25, 1923 in the Mooney Creek Community the son of Fred and Ella (Bertels) Noll. Carl lived most of his life in the Mooney Creek Community. He worked in Leavenworth as a carpenter for several years, he ran a bull dozer for 10 years for Raymond Schrick, and was a road grader for 27 years for Jefferson County Road Dept. and he farmed. He was a member of the Corpus Christi Church, Mooney Creek, he enjoyed watching his two sons and grandsons car race, coyote and coon hunting.

Carl was married to Joan Elaine Chmidling on June 3, 1947 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Nortonville. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include four sons; Larry and his wife Jill Noll, Nortonville, KS, Dale and his wife Gloria Noll, Oskaloosa, KS, Fred and his wife Jean Noll, Atchison, KS and Leon and his wife C.C. Noll, of Atchison, KS, two daughters; Mrs. Bonnie and her husband Larry Schrick, Easton, KS, and Mrs. Marie and her husband Greg McDaniel, Atchison, KS a brother; Melvin Noll, Atchison, KS, five sisters; Esther Arpin, Salina, KS, Eulaine Schmidt, Winchester, KS, Gelene Weishaar, Nortonville, KS, Freida Weishaar, Nortonville, KS and Rita January, Lyons, KS, fifteen grandchildren, four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Mary Erpelding, 94 years old, formerly of Cummings, KS died Saturday, June 14, 2008 at the Atchison Medicalodge.

Mary P. Raffety was born on July 6, 1913 in Mountain Grove, MO, the daughter of James. W. and Adeline (Roberson) Raffety. Mary lived and worked with her husband on the dairy farm in the Pardee Community until Febraury 2003. She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Cummings, KS, the “We Can’t Give Up Circle” of the church, the Senior Citizens of Effingham, KS, and the Happy Hour Club. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, gardening, flowers, and her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She was married to Aloysius Erpelding on February 16, 1949 in Leavenworth, Kansas. Mr. Erpelding preceded her in death on June 3, 1983. Survivors include; three daughters; Barbara Nichols, Nortonville, KS, Patricia and her husband Ed Larson, Warsaw, MO., and Coleen and her husband Bill Murphy, Atchison, KS, Five Grandchildren, One great granddaughter and five great grandson’s and several nieces and nephews. Her parents, a brother, Elvyn Raffety, and two sister's; Bernice Merrittand Mae Perkins preceded her in death.

Carole Greenlund, 94 years old of Atchison, died Tuesday, June 10th, 2008 at the Atchison Senior Village.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, June 14th, 2008 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Dr. Raymond C. Hartjen, Jr. officiating. Mrs. Greenlund was born on August 19th, 1913 in Pulaski, VA the fifth child of James Monroe and Bessie (Barte) Hardy. She was married to Nelson Greenlund on July 26th, 1934 in Baltimore, MD. He preceded her in death on Oct. 10, 1974. Mrs. Greenlund was active in many civic organizations, sitting on the Board of Directors for the Atchison County Board of Health, a member of the Bellevue Country Club and the Atchison Hospital Auxiliary. She was a founding member of the Hospital Auxiliary and was chairwoman of its “Follies” twice. She loved the game of golf and won several titles. She was also an avid bridge player and played well into her 90’s. Mrs. Greenlund loved to travel, and had been to many parts of the world.

Survivors include a son and his wife; Dr. Nelson and Susan Greenlund, Nevada, MO., a daughter; Sally and her husband Dr. Forest Irons, Casper, WY., three grandchildren; Dr. Andrew Greenlund, Rochester, MN., Matthew Greenlund, Broadlands, VA., and Caro Santilli Patterson, Tuscan, AZ., and three great grandchildren. Her parents, husband, one brother, two half brothers, and three sisters preceded her in death.

Julia M. Brookshire was born May 24, 1915 at Oak Mills, KS, the daughter of William A. and Lillie V. (Ratliff) Brookshire. She attended schools in Oak Mills. Julia worked as a machine operator for the Saunders Manufacturing Company, Atchison. She retired in 1971. She was a member of the Atchison First Christian Church, Martha Group II, and church choir. Julia enjoyed sewing, reading, gardening and flowers. Julia and her husband, John, farmed in the Doniphan area for many years.

Julia and John W. Wood were united in marriage on February 9, 1953 in Atchison, KS. He preceded her in death on October 13, 1995. She was also preceded by her parents and one nephew, Wayne Rivers.

Survivors include one son John W. Wood, Jr. of Troy, KS; one sister, Frances Cripe, of Maryville, KS; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Dale E. Schurman, 73, of St. Joseph, MO, formerly of the Atchison/Lancaster area, died Monday, May 26, 2008 at the Saxton Care Chateau in St. Joseph.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Thursday, May 29, 2008 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lancaster, KS. Dale, the youngest of six children, was born September 23, 1934 in Atchison, the son of William Clarence and Ida (Larson) Schurman. He attended Maple Grove School, northeast of Effingham, KS. Dale had cerebral palsy all his life but while he was able he worked mowing the Maple Grove Cemetery. Dale was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lancaster, where he was baptized and confirmed. He was also a member of the Mo-Kan Engine Club; he loved the Model ‘T’ car and John Deere Tractors. Dale looked forward to and was very proud that he was the only family member to attend every family reunion held of the Larson and Peterson families.

Survivors include one brother, Charles William Schurman of St. Joseph, MO; one sister, Clella Marie Gray of Occidental, CA; numerous nieces and nephews.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, John Robert Schurman and Loren Richard ‘Dick’ Schurman; one sister, Mary Janet Crawford.

Mary L. Beien, 79, Atchison, KS died Sunday morning, May 25, 2008 at the Atchison Hospital after a lengthy illness.

Mary was born February 21, 1929 in Atchison the daughter of Jack and Antoinette (Lawless) Gardner. She had lived in Rushville, MO, Wichita, KS and Effingham, KS before moving back to Atchison. Mary attended Sacred Heart Grade School, graduated from Atchison High School and attended Atchison Business College. She had worked for Thomas Moxey, St. Benedict’s College and Kansas Power and Light. She married Fred Beien on May 5, 1952 in St. Benedict’s Church and they resided south of Atchison and attended St. Patrick’s Church. In November of 1952 they moved to Atchison and became members of St. Joseph’s Church. Mrs. Beien was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Knights of Columbus Auxiliary, American Legion Auxiliary and the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE).

Mary is survived by 2 sons; Richard and wife Cathi, Cibolo, TX and Raymond, Atchison, a sister; Rita and Bob Edwards, Columbia and 1 grandson, Hyattsville, MD.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred on April 11, 1998.

Catherine was born on December 10, 1913 in Eden, KS, the daughter of Cyril and Rose (Hager) Schletzbaum. She attended St. Louis High School at Good Intent, was a member of the St. Louis Church, and St. Louis Altar Society. Catherine loved flowers, gardening, and especially enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Catherine and Lawrence H. Erpelding were married on October 8, 1936 at St. Louis Church in the Good Intent Community. They farmed together for many years. Lawrence preceded Catherine in death on June 8, 2007. She was also preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Albert and Raymond Schletzbaum; one sister, Elizabeth Geritz.

Survivors include three sons, Dick (Carol) Erpelding of Atchison; Larry (Donna) Erpelding of Manhattan, KS, and Ron (Donna) Erpelding of Atchison; one daughter, Judy (Ray) Kramer of Cummings, KS; one sister, Rosemary Diebolt of Atchison; 17 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; 5 great-great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.

Albert Eugene (Gene) Zeit, 78, Atchison, KS passed away Thursday, May 22, 2008 at St. Luke’s Hospital, Kansas City, MO.

Gene was born October 28, 1929 in Atchison the son of Albert and Merle (Douglas) Zeit. He farmed for over 60 years in the Good Intent area. He married Dorothy Angold on October 27, 1949 in St. Joseph, MO. He was a member of the St. Louis Church, and Men’s VFW Auxiliary. Gene was also the Chaplain of the Sons of the American Legion. He enjoyed playing cards and spending time with his family and friends.

Gene is survived by his son, J.R. Zeit, Topeka, a daughter; Linda (David) Banks, Holton, three sisters; Doris Whaley and Mary Louise Hurst, both of Effingham, and Pat Pruett, Lancaster, 3 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy on May 24, 2003, his parents and three brothers; Richard, Jerry and Charles Zeit.

Sherry Dale Lapp, 60, of Atchison, KS, passed away unexpectedly, Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at Hays Medical Center in Hays, KS while returning home from vacation.

Sherry was born on September 24, 1947 in Little Rock, Arkansas, the daughter of Harold Joseph and Margaret Liddy (Womack) Brigance. She attended Atchison County Community High School in Effingham and later completed business courses at a Technical College in Jefferson City, MO. Sherry had worked as a floral designer for Atchison Floral for many years. For the past twelve years, Sherry had been working as the office manager for Patsy A. Porter, CPA.

Sherry loved shopping, decorating, traveling with her husband Ron, and especially she loved her granddaughters, to whom she was known as “Nanny Lapp”.

Sherry was married to Gerald Ernzen on June 15, 1963. They later divorced.
