David W. Page, 60, of Rushville, MO, passed away unexpectedly Thursday, September 2, 2010 at his home.

Funeral and Masonic Lodge Services will be 10:30 AM, Tuesday, September 7, at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, KS. Burial will follow in the Sugar Creek Cemetery, Rushville, MO. Family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:30 pm, Monday, at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in honor of David are suggested to the Shriner’s Children Hospital or American Heart Association and may be left in care of the funeral home. David was born on March 21, 1950 in Atchison, the son of William and Elsie (Woolston) Page. David graduated from West Platte High School in Weston, MO and from Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, MO, with a Bachelors degree in Science Technology and an Associate’s degree in Electrical Engineering. David was a farmer all of his life in the Rushville area and sold insurance for Farmer’s Mutual Hail Insurance Company. The David Page family was the first family chosen as Platte County Farm Family of the Year by the Farm Bureau.

David had served as Past Master and was currently the secretary for Rushville Masonic Lodge # 238. He was a member of the Moila Shrine Temple in St. Joseph and was very active in transporting children to the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital in St. Louis, MO. David had been a member of the Farmers Co-op Association, Sugar Creek Cemetery Board, and a former Vice-President of the Sugar Creek Levy Board. David enjoyed reading and especially spending time with his grandson, Thatcher.

David and Sharon Gawatz were married on February 16, 1974 in St. Joseph, MO. Sharon survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son, Bill Page and his wife, Joni, of Tonganoxie, KS; a daughter Sarah Page of Overland Park, KS; a grandson, Thatcher Page; a brother, Roger Page of Rushville, MO; a sister, Janet Pool and her husband, Allan, of Indianapolis, IN; and three nieces.

Adeline Georgia Wood, 93, Effingham, KS, passed away Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at the Horton Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Saturday, September 4, 2010 at the Becker Chapel, Effingham, KS, with Pastor Roger Frederick, officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:00-8:30 PM Friday at the Becker Chapel. Adeline was born June 15, 1917 in Brooklyn, NY the daughter of Alphonsus and Adelina (Blackner) Valiando. Adeline graduated from James Madison High School in New York in 1935 and Ottawa University in Kansas in 1939. Adeline was a teacher in Sabetha, KS for 3 years and a foreign language teacher in Effingham, KS for 41 years. She loved to bake cake and cookies. She would always have a cake prepared on Friday’s for the faculty members in Effingham. Adeline enjoyed reading books and magazines, collecting dog figurines, writing letters and her weekly trip to the beauty shop. She was a member of the Win Sum Dozen Club and was always eager to help her neighbor ladies.

Adeline married Harold L. Wood on June 18, 1942 in Holton KS. He preceded her in death on February 28, 1971. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Charles H. Wood on July 15, 1961; a grandson, Charles Harold Krug on February 28, 1981; a great-granddaughter, Alejandra Sanchez; a brother, Charles Valiando; three sisters, Geraldine Valiando, Eleanor Linden and Alicia Brigante.

Survivors include her daughters, Yvonne Wood and Janis (Kenn) Krug, both of Horton, KS; and Cheryl (Ron) Coffman, Topeka, KS; son, Steve Wood, Meriden, KS; grandchildren, John and Jimmy Boos, Tony and Tim Sanchez, Matthew Chase, Kelly Chanay and Kristopher Krug; great-grandchildren, Cody Boos, Darryn Lee, Iszabella and Aytumn Sanchez, Anthony Sanchez and Mason Chanay.

Elmer L. Kuhnert ,81, of Rushville, MO, died Friday, August 27, 2010 at the Heartland Regional Medical Center, St. Joseph, MO.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM on Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Robert Ziegler, Pastor of the Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Elmer Lee Kuhnert was born on Jan. 17, 1929 in Doniphan, KS, the son of Roy A. and Gertrude Marie (McBride) Kuhnert. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and returned home to farming. He was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, the American Legion Post # 6, the VFW Post # 1175, both of Atchison, the NRA and enjoyed farming, bowling, fishing, snowmobiling, collecting toy miniature tractors and his rat terrier dog- Lillie.

Elmer was married to Elizabeth Dame on Aug 26, 1955 at Trinity Lutheran Church. Elizabeth survives of the home. Additional survivors include; two sons, Randy Kuhnert, Atchison, KS., Jeff (Teri) Kuhnert, Rushville, MO., three daughters, Robyn (Greg) Wagner, Cummings, KS., Lisa (Ted) Hurst, Effingham, and Beth (Terry) Hamilton, Effingham, KS., a sister, Louise(Louie) Shockey, Atchison, KS., Ten grandchildren; Gabriel (Jennifer), Jacob (Dana), Lucas (Sarah)Wagner, Alison & Rebekah Kuhnert, Brooke & Jeanie Hurst, Austin , Sara and Evan Hamilton, and three great grandchildren, Hannah, Kori, and Emma Wagner. His parents, a brother, Roy Kuhnert, Jr., and a sister, Emma Jean Bramble preceded him in death.

Lloyd R. Vanwagoner, 69, of Atchison, passed away Sunday, August 22, 2010 at Heartland Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, August 26, 2010 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, with Pastor Nicole Schwartz officiating. Burial will follow at Mt.Vernon Cemetery. There will be a Masonic and Eastern Star service at 6:00 PM Wednesday, August 25, 2010 followed by visitation until 9:00 PM. Memorial contributions are suggested to the American Diabetes Association, United Methodist Church or Masonic Home and may be left in care of the funeral home.

Lloyd was born August 2, 1941 the son of Lloyd Elmer and Augusta Edna (Boyd) Vanwagoner. Mr. Vanwagoner was a certified tig welder for Atchison Castings for forty-two years before retiring. He was a member of United Methodist Church, the Mason’s and Eastern Star. Lloyd enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping, watching old movies and westerns.

Lloyd Vanwagoner married Carol Maycroft June 6, 1964, she survives of the home. Additional survivors include two sons, Richard (Shelly) Vanwagoner, Topeka, KS; Steve (Pam) Vanwagoner, Atchison, KS; one daughter, Maria (Chris) Lemonds, Blue Ridge, TX; two sisters, Dorothy (Pat) Parks, Rushville, MO; Edna( Leonard) Neimeyer, Grandbe, MO and nine grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother-in-law; Bob Mckinnhen.

Ruthellen Louise Welch, 87, Atchison, passed away Friday, August 20, 2010 at the Atchison Senior Village.

Funeral services will be 10:00 AM, Monday, August 23, 2010 at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev. Robert Ziegler, officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Vernon Cemetery. Ruthellen was born March 19, 1923 in Atchison County the daughter of Ernest Robert and Louise Bertha (Kley) Peuker. She attended school in Independence Valley. She worked for the Saunders Mop Factory for over 20 years and operated a dairy in Cummings, KS. Ruthellen enjoyed raising chickens, gardening and loved being outdoors. She especially enjoyed time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She married Clarence Edward Welch on March 5, 1944 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Atchison. He preceded her in death on August 16, 1950.

Survivors include sons, Ronnie (Debbie) Welch and Phillip Welch, both of Cummings, KS; daughters, Shirley Moore, Leavenworth, KS and Connie (John) Gering, Cummings, KS; a brother, Dwight Peuker, Atchison; a sister, Virginia Hoffman, Liberty, MO, 13 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 4 step-great-grandchildren.

Ruthellen was also preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Ernest Peuker; a sister, Betty Reeves; a grandson, Aaron Miller; great-grandchildren, Nikki Guardado, Steven Gering and Christopher Misner, a daughter-in-law, Tammy Welch and a son-in-law Ron Moore.

O. Carl Boyer, 91, of Atchison, KS, passed away Friday, August 20, 2010 at the Atchison Medicalodge.

Graveside Funeral Services and Burial will be 2:00 pm, Sunday, August 22, at Sunset Memory Gardens, Atchison. Memorial contributions in memory of Carl are suggested to Abundant Life Hospice. The Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral is in charge of the arrangements.

Carl was born on September 19, 1918 in Sloan, IA, the son of Ono Carl and Olive Mary (Dobbertein) Boyer, Sr. He attended schools in Iowa and Carl and Dorothy Link were united in marriage on June 11, 1936 in Parker, South Dakota. Carl entered the military and served overseas in the US Army during World War II. Carl worked for Rockwell International in California and Kearney, NE, prior to moving in 1961 to Atchison, where he continued to work in Quality Control for Rockwell until he retired in 1982. Carl served an unexpired term as an Atchison City Commissioner. Carl enjoyed gardening and working in his yard.

Carl was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Dorothy, on June 18, 2008; and a sister, Peggy Garoutte.

Survivors include two sons, Rollie and Brenda Boyer, Atchison and John and Deborah Boyer, St. Charles, MO; sister, Grayce E. Uhl, Moville, IA; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Justin Kent Behler, 47, Atchison, passed away Thursday, August 19, 2010 at the Atchison Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Monday, August 23, 2010 at the First Baptist Church with Rev. Brad Cartmill, officiating. Burial will follow in the Old Huron Cemetery. Justin was born December 14, 1962 in Tucson, AZ the son of Grimes Edwin and Bette J. (Luckett) Behler. He graduated from high school in 1980 and was in the Marine Corps serving at Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and spent time in Okinawa, Japan. Justin was a core maker for Bradken in Atchison. He was a faithful father, a very talented caricature artist, an excellent cook, and loved to read, especially Lonesome Dove. Justin loved cooking his famous potato salad for the veterans’ dinners and enjoyed helping with the Color Guard for the American Legion.

Justin married Bobbi Jo Meade on June 14, 1997 in Atchison, she survives of the home. Additional survivors include his father, Ed Behler, Atchison; sons, Josh Behler, Atchison; and Alex and Austin Behler, of the home; daughters, Clarrisa Clark, Clarksville, TN, and Allison Behler, of the home; brothers, Gregory Behler, Weston, MO; David Behler, Atchison and a sister, Dianna Snell, Atchison, KS.

Justin was preceded in death by his mother, Bette Behler, on November 1, 2009.

Malinda 'Laurie' Wilburn, 49, Atchison, passed away Saturday, August 14, 2010 at her home.

Laurie was born June 5, 1961 in Leavenworth, KS the daughter of Frank and Malinda (Mylam) Valles. Her dad passed away when she was 5 and her mother married Frank Wiseman who treated her like his own daughter. Laurie enjoyed playing bingo, painting ceramics, watching television and playing Tetris.

Survivors include a son, Jason Valles and his wife, Jennifer, Atchison, KS; step-brother, Tim Wiseman, Leavenworth, KS; step-sister, Terry Wiseman and 6 grandchildren, Tiana, Jack, and Timothy Valles, Bradenton, FL and Dylan, Kristina and Brianna Area, Atchison, KS.

Laurie was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Larry Valles.

Meta M. Bechtold , 96 , of Atchison, KS, died Saturday, August 14, 2010 at the Atchison Medicalodge.

Meta was born on Feb.16th, 1914 in the Sumner Community the daughter of LeRoy and Hannah (Gilliland) Lister. She attended Atchison grade schools and worked for 16 years as a seamstress for the former Horton Garment Factory, Atchison. She was a housewife and homemaker most of her life. She enjoyed crocheting, quilting, knitting, sewing, gardening and raising flowers, cooking and especially her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Meta was married to Paul W. Bechtold on Nov. 11, 1933 at the Atchison County Courthouse. Mr. Bechtold preceded her in death on March 29, 1996. Survivors include three sons; John (Pat) Bechtold, Littleton, CO., James (Sally) Bechtold, Atchison, KS., and Tom (Jeannine) Bechtold, Leavenworth, KS., a daughter, Patricia (Gene) Kane, Atchison, KS., fourteen grand children, eighteen great grandchildren, and four great great grandchildren. Her parents, five brothers; Emmett, Elmer, Chester, Ira Lister, and stillborn infant brother and sister, Theodore and Thelma Lister, also preceded her in death.

Mary Ann was born October 16, 1938 in Atchison KS, daughter of Andy and Florence (Vanhorn) Servaes. She was a Licensed Practical Nurse and did private nursing. She enjoyed drawing and painting, horses, going to auctions, but especially enjoyed her grandchildren and spending time with her sisters.

Mary Ann Servaes married Jack Robinson in September of 1956 he preceded her in death in 1975. Survivors include four daughters; Sue Rhoades, Holton, KS, Kathy Burgess, Holton, KS, Robin (Michael) Whitten, Stewartsville, MO and Becky Robinson, Lawrence, KS, five brothers; Leroy Servaes, Atchison, Gene Servaes, Atchison, Larry Servaes, Atchison, Phil Servaes, Atchison, Richard Servaes, Rushville, MO, five sisters; Carole Noll, Cummings, KS, Janet Lee, Atchison, Dorothy Lee, Royal City, WA, Joan, Ragsdale, Topeka, Rita Rookstool, Topeka, ten grandchildren and sixteen great grandchildren. Lloyd W. Lanter , 83 of Atchison, KS died Thursday, August 12, 2010 at his home surrounded by family.

Lloyd was born on Feb. 12th,1927 in Brown County, KS. , the son of Bruce T. and Grace Arlene (Dodge) Lanter. He attended Brown and Atchison County schools before graduating from the Everest High School. Mr. Lanter was a U. S. Army veteran serving in the Mechanized Calvary from 1945-1946 . Mr. Lanter was a farmer from 1947 to 1975 in the Everest, Horton area. He worked for the State of Kansas as a Driver’s License Agent from 1966-1991. After his retirement he worked for the Atchison County Co-op from 1991- 1995 and for Colonial Realty Company, Atchison from 1988-2009. Lloyd was a member of the Everest Christian Church, the Everest American Legion Post, and the Atchison McDonalds Coffee Club. He enjoyed collecting kerosene lamps and miniature John Deere tractors. He especially enjoyed his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Lloyd was married to RuthEllen Lutz on Aug. 19, 1951 at the Everest Christian Church. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son; Edward D. (Alice) Lanter, Atchison, KS., two daughters; Sharon L. (Dwight)Locke, Atchison, and Sandra K. (Steven) Handke, Horton, KS., two brothers; Donald (Helen ) Lanter, Horton, KS., Richard (Donna )Lanter, Horton, KS., two sisters; Ruth (Carol) Smith, Everest, KS., and Helen Coffelt, Topeka. Two sister-in laws; Wilda Lanter and Marjorie Lanter, both of Horton, KS., Nine grandchildren, five step grandchildren, seventeen great grandchildren, and nine step great grandchildren. His parents, two brothers; Robert and Roy Lanter, and brother in-law, Raymond Coffelt preceded him in death.

Craig Mitchell Church, 53, Atchison, KS, drowned August 6, 2010 from possible cardiac complications while fishing at Dam 7.

Craig was born February 14, 1957 in Anchorage, AK, the son of John and Dee (Bond) Church. After graduating from Atchison High School he served with the US Army, worked at the Youth Center, the Colonial Nursing Center and Fort Leavenworth Officers Club. Medical conditions placed him on physical disability for the past 15 years. Craig enjoyed fishing especially with his grandson and nephew whenever possible.

Survivors include his parents, John and Dee Church; former wives, Debra Grandpre and Teresa Long; stepdaughter, Brandi Long and grandchildren.

Annette L. Marlatt, 87, of Atchison, KS, passed away Thursday, August 5, 2010 at the Atchison Hospital.

Annette was born June 16, 1923 in Atchison, the daughter of Arthur and Rose (Saggs) Ostertag. She graduated from Atchison High School and had worked as a clerk for the Selective Service System for 17 years, retiring in 1968. Annette volunteered for many years with the Atchison Hospital Auxiliary, working in its Thrift Shop and also with the Atchison Library.

Annette and Charles Milton Marlatt were married on November 23, 1967 and he preceded Annette in death on March 16, 1987. Annette was also preceded in death by her parents; stepson, Charles Milton Marlatt II; two brothers, Roy Ostertag and Adrian Ostertag.

Survivors include a daughter, Amy Rowland, Berkley Springs, WV; stepdaughters, Susan Krug and Priscilla Willmeth; brother, John Ostertag, St. Joseph, MO; sister, Catherine Armstrong, Atchison; four grandchildren and ten great-grandsons.

Vera Mae (Pike) Schwarzer, 88, of Lancaster, KS, passed away Wednesday, August 4, 2010 at the Atchison Medicalodge.

Vera was born July 24, 1922 in Atchison County south of Lancaster, the daughter of the late Charles and Anna (Volk) Pike. She attended grade school at Cain School and graduated from Atchison High School in 1940. Vera was a teacher for 4 years and a homemaker. She was a very active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, the Sunshine Unit and several other organizations.

Vera married Walter ‘Pete’ Schwarzer on April 20, 1947 at the First Christian Church. He preceded her in death on January 17, 1988. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Charles and Raymond Pike and a sister Anna Belle Pike.

Survivors include a son, Donald Schwarzer, Lancaster, KS; daughter, Judy and son-in-law, Jerry Keimig, Kansas City, MO; brother, Warren ‘Bud’ Pike, Lancaster, KS; and two grandchildren, Jeri Ann Keimig, Brooklyn, NY and Jessica Schwarzer, Atchison, KS.

Ada Eylar , 88, Atchison, passed away, Tuesday, August 3, 2010 at the Atchison Medicalodge.

Ada was born September 13, 1921 in Atchison, KS, the daughter of the late William Joseph and Matilda ‘Mattie’ (Mount) Phillips. She had worked as a packer at Blair Milling for over 40 years and then at Waisner’s Clothing Store. Ada was an active member of the Carol Baptist Church and enjoyed helping with their missions. She enjoyed bowling and was one of the best dressed bowlers around. Ada liked a kept home and enjoyed cleaning.

Ada married Merle D. Eylar in Doniphan, KS in 1939. He preceded her in death in 1989. She is also preceded in death by her brothers, Jim, Roy and Bill Phillips; and sisters, Viola Foottit, Grace McDonald and Maxine Graves.

Survivors include her sons, Gary and Lisa Eylar, Atchison and Daniel and Jan Eylar, Savannah, MO, 4 grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild.

Lynne H. Fitzpatrick , 71 of Effingham KS passed away Thursday July 29, 2010 at the Atchison Hospital.

Memorial Service will be 3:00PM Saturday July 31, 2010 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison KS with Reverend Larry Bowyer officiating. Lynne was born October 23, 1938 in Minneapolis KS the daughter of Otis and Verna (Lott) Heberly. She was a member of the Episcopalian faith; she had worked at Wal-Mart, Atchison Leather Products and ran the gas station in Effingham. Lynne enjoyed demolition derbies, cross-stitching, game shows, genealogy, card games and nature. She especially enjoyed attending her grandchildren’s sporting events, musicals and plays and anything else they were involved in.

Lynne Heberly married Norman Keith Fitzpatrick on September 2, 1961 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Minneapolis KS, he survives of the home. Additional survivors include two sons; Gary Fitzpatrick, Horton KS, Shane (Leann) Fitzpatrick, Effingham KS, one daughter, Lynne Elaine (Greg) Kurtz, Effingham KS, seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers; Phillip and Larry Heberly and a sister; Anita Sue Heberly.

Alenna M. Sanders, 94, of Nortonville, KS, died Tuesday, July 27th, 2010 in Topeka, KS.

Alenna was born on January 17th, 1916 on a farm north of Effingham, KS, the daughter of John D. and Alice (Law) Hawk. She graduated from Washburn University with a degree in teaching. Mrs. Sanders taught school for 16 years in Atchison County and 27 years in Jefferson County before retiring in 1978. She was a member of the Cummings Christian Church, the Retired Teachers Association, the Washburn Alumnae Assoc., the Cummings Christian Church Ladies Aide and T.O. P. S. She enjoyed reading, volunteering and visiting with family and friends.

She was married to Merle Henry Sanders on May 26, 1940 at the Christian Church, Atchison. Mr. Sanders preceded her in death on July 30, 1983. Survivors include a daughter; Marlena Weishaar and her husband Leo, Topeka, KS, two grandsons; Michael Weishaar , San Diego, CA, and Craig Weishaar and his wife Amy, Lawrence, KS, two great grandchildren; Molly and Ryan Weishaar. Her parents, and eight brothers and sisters preceded her in death.

Doris was born on September 17, 1937 in Atchison County KS the daughter of Albert and Merle (Douglas) Zeit. She worked as a housewife and homemaker. She was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church. Doris enjoyed gardening, flowers, going on walks and traveling with Bob, her grandchildren and family.

Doris Marie Zeit married Robert Whaley on February 9, 1956 at St. Louis Church at Good Intent, he survives of the home. Mary 'Irene' (Page) Huff, 91 years of age, formerly of Rushville, MO, passed away, Saturday, July 24, 2010 at the Community Hospice House, Merrimack, NH.

Mary ‘Irene’ Page was born on October 1, 1918 in Rushville, MO, the daughter of Herbert and Florence E. (Lawrence) Page. She graduated from Lafayette Junior-Senior High School, St. Joseph, MO and attended Business College in St. Joseph. Irene worked as a teller at the former City National Bank, Atchison; then as a Military wife lived in England, Japan and numerous locations in the United States. In 1965 the family moved to Shawnee Mission, KS where she lived for 37 years. In 1965 Irene began working for the Capital Federal Savings and Loan becoming the Head Teller/New Account Representative. She later retired in 1985. She was a former active member of the Countryside Christian Church, Mission, KS and was a lifelong bridge player. Irene moved to Nashua New Hampshire in 2002.

She was married to Woodrow B. Huff on December 11, 1937. Mr. Huff preceded her in death on October 5, 1981. She was also predeceased by her brother, Charles “Larry” Page, sister, Doris Page and son-in-law, Roman Dulski. Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Dulski, Northfield, MN; a son and daughter-in-law, Gary & Joan Huff, Nashua, NH; a sister, Dorothy Norris, Northfield, MN; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Huff, Nashua, NH, Michael and his wife, Linda Dulski, Boise, ID, and Anthony Dulski, Northfield, MN and four great grandchildren, Sam and Benjamin Dulski, Boise, ID, and Elissa and Joshua Dulski, Northfield, MN.

Leola was born July 14, 1920 in Guilford, KS the daughter of the late Henry and Clarinda (Burns) Dennis. She worked as a housekeeper for the Norton Hospital until her retirement. Leola enjoyed quilting, sewing, gardening, flowers and bird watching. She was a caregiver her entire life taking care of her siblings, parents and other family members. Family was the most important thing to Leola.

She married George Elwin Dame on May 6, 1940 in Madison, KS and he preceded her in death on May 1, 1981. Survivors include a son, Elwin Leroy (Patricia) Dame, Ames, OK; daughters, Neola (Dwight) Shrader, Bendena, KS and Leanna (John) Strong, Leavenworth, KS; sister, Lavena Bosacki, Fredonia, KS, 10 grandchildren, numerous great and great-great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

Leola was also preceded in death by a son, Ronald Eugene Dame; her brothers, Ray, Roy, Reilly and Roley Dennis; sisters, Edna Clifton, Elmae Lopeman, Dolly Clifton and Ina Elliott and a grandchild.

Ruby was born March 27, 1917 in Arrington, KS the daughter of the late Herman and Lenna (Bond) Babcock. She was married to Lloyd Everett August and he preceded her in death in 1984. Ruby was a homemaker, farmer and most importantly, a foster parent. She helped to raise over 40 kids. She was very family oriented and loved helping kids. Ruby enjoyed painting, gardening, canning, baking and reading. She loved spending time with friends and always watched Dr. Phil. Ruby read her bible often and walked many miles to stay in shape.

Ruby is survived by many people who loved her dearly.

Joseph H. Durkin was born on Feb. 12, 1924 in St. Joseph, Mo., the son of John and Alma (Frederick) Durkin. Mr. Durkin worked for Armour Foods for eight years and then as a crane operator at the former L.F. M and Rockwell International for many years retiring in 1986. He was a member of St. Benedicts Church, and enjoyed country music, Royals Baseball and especially his grandchildren. .

He was married to Joan (Hager) Schneider on Dec. 27, 1973 in Atchison, KS. She survives of the home. Earl was born on February 3, 1930 in Atchison, KS., the son of Fred and Emma (Lange) Fuhrman. He graduated from Atchison County Community High School, Effingham, and was married to Wanda Mae Strong in 1952, at Worden, KS. Earl was a farmer and stockman in Atchison County his whole life. He was a club leader of Lucky Clover 4-H Club, which he helped to co-organize. He hosted the Balanced Farming Field Day in 1956 with over 3,000 attendees, was Globe Honor Farmer in 1959, received the Kansas Banker Association Award in 1963, and served a term as the Atchison County Farm Bureau President. Earl was a lifelong member of the Camp Creek United Methodist Church in which he held many positions. He enjoyed people, had a wonderful sense of humor and loved spending time with his family.

He leaves behind his wife, Wanda Fuhrman, of the home, his daughter; Ranae (Phillip) Phelps, Longview, TX, his son; Marlin (Debra) Fuhrman, Cummings, KS., his sister; Laverne (Charles) Fowler, Nortonville, KS., six grandchildren; Marissa Greentree, Kansas City; Ross (Jennie) Fuhrman, Atchison; Tyler Fuhrman, Cummings, KS., Rachel Phelps, Olathe, KS., Allyson and Kayleigh Fuhrman, Cummings, KS., three great grandchildren; Emily and Michael Fuhrman, and Burr Greentree, numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. Max L. Wentz was born on June 19, 1940 in Downs, KS., the son of Ralph E. and Mary O. (Thummel) Wentz. Max was a U.S. Navy veteran serving from 1960 to 1965. Max owned and operated the M & M Salvage Yard. He also worked at the Atchison CO-OP, and delivered milk and Ice cream for a dairy in Leavenworth. Max helped clean up at G & G Auction, was a former member of the American Legion Post # 6, Atchison, KS., was President of the Sumner Cemetery Association, and helped mark graves at the cemetery. He enjoyed western movies, reading, playing darts, cards and dice games, working on cars, horses, and country music especially Hank Williams Sr.,

He was married to Cheryl Zacharias on Dec. 29, 1964. Mrs. Wentz preceded him in death in 1998. Survivors include three sons; Michael L. (Marilyn) Wentz, Muscotah, KS., Francis E. (Yvonne) Wentz, Cummings, KS., and Patrick W. (Jennifer) Wentz, Atchison, KS., Daughter; Sheryl Y. Wentz, Atchison, KS., two brothers; Marvin (Cindy) Wentz, Girard, KS., and Raymond Wentz, Arizona, a Sister; Cecelia Wilcox, Nortonville, KS., nine grandchildren and one great grandchild, and several nieces and nephews. Rosie was born January 4, 1926 in Goff, KS, the daughter of Julius and Anna (Schuetz) Berger. Rosie and Marvin Kimmi were united in marriage on June 23, 1947 in Horton, KS. Rosie was primarily a wife, mother and homemaker; together she and Marvin owned and operated Kimmi Lumber and Sawmill near Everest for over 40 years. Rosie was a member of St. Leo’s Catholic Church, Horton. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, playing cards, working crossword puzzles and especially loved being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Rosie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marvin; son, Dale Kimmi; daughters, Nadine Weinmann and Marilyn Madden; grandson, Louis Madden, Jr.; great-granddaughter, Taylor Kimmi; great-grandsons, Quincy and Drake Howell; six brothers; three sisters.

Kathryn was born September 26, 1918 in St. Joseph, MO, the daughter of James and Myrtle (Widmaier) Smith. She attended rural country grade schools prior to attending seventh and eighth grade at Trinity Lutheran School. Kathryn worked for the Horton Garment Factory in Atchison for seventeen years before receiving her LPN license in 1976. She then worked as a nurse’s aide at Valley Hope in Atchison until she retired in 1986. Kathryn was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and was active in many church ministries and community activities. Kathryn especially enjoyed taking care of her grandchildren.

Kathryn was married to Miles Connaway on June 1, 1938 in Troy, KS. Miles preceded Kathryn in death in 1964. Kathryn was then married to Francis Miller on August 12, 1966 in Atchison. Francis preceded Kathryn in death in 1990. Kathryn’s parents; a son, Michael Connaway; a daughter, Norma Connaway; a great-granddaughter, Logan; two brothers, J.W. (Bill) and James Smith; four sisters, Lois Reynolds, Frances Gilkison, Doris Wilson, Claribel Smith; all preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Sharon (Alfred) Ernzen, Atchison; one granddaughter, Rebecca Welch, Atchison; two great-granddaughters, Maddison and Mackenzie.

Ruth L. Myers was born on April 12, 1927 in Lancaster, KS. the daughter of Hubert and Gladys (McNish) Myers. She lived her life in Lancaster and the Atchison Community. Ruth attended Hopewell Grade School and graduated from Effingham High School. Ruth had worked as a sales clerk for the Dress Racque for many years. She also owned and operated her own store called Country Crafts. Ruth was a Mary Kay cosmetic consultant for several years, earning many awards. She was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and served as a Kennedy Evangelism caller. She was an 8 to 8 Prayer Minister and a member of one of the ladies circles of the church. Ruth enjoyed flowers, crafts, sewing and visiting with people.

She was married to Dwight Peuker on March 25, 1949 at Trinity Lutheran Church by Rev. Haur. Mr. Peuker survives of the home. Additional survivors include; two sons; Steven (Yvonne) Peuker, Atchison and Dennis and fiancée Shelly Baker, Atchison, KS., a brother; Edward Myers, Atchison, KS., six grandchildren; Scott Peuker, Keith Peuker, Brandee Buckley, Mindee Sloan, and Andrew Peuker. Seven great grandchildren; Francesca and Delaney Peuker, Lorene Peuker, Austin Sloan, Kenadee & Karlee Buckley, and Remington Peuker. Mary was born November, 27, 1923, in Imogene, Iowa the daughter of John and Agnes (Meier) Chmidling. Mary was a member of the Benedictine Order of Mount Saint Scholastica in Atchison (Sister Marlene, OSB) from 1943 to 1968 when she returned to secular life and taught at St. Joseph’s Grade School in Nortonville from 1968 until her retirement in 1985. Mary moved to Leavenworth in 2005 to Hillcrest Manor. Mary was a member of St. Casmir Church in Leavenworth, KS. Mary’s greatest joy was helping all family members, especially when new babies were born. Mary was best known for walking three times a day, two miles each time, while saying her rosary.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents and four brothers, Richard, Charles, Bill and Marvin.

Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. Joan (Carl) Noll of Nortonville and Carol Daniels of Leavenworth; two brothers, Joseph ‘Jerry’ Chmidling of Leavenworth and John Chmidling of Goshen, Indiana; many nieces and nephews.

Albert F. Stolp, 84, Atchison, passed away, Monday, June 21, 2010 at the Gran Villas of Atchison.

Albert was born February 1, 1926 in Atchison, KS the son of Fred and Mary (Watowa) Stolp. He graduated from Atchison County Community High School in 1943. Albert was a farmer his entire life and was quite the sportsman. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, welding and drawing.

Albert married Marcella Kacirek on November 15, 1958 in St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Atchison, KS. She preceded him in death on July 22, 1999. Survivors include five daughters, Mary Ann Staley, Kansas City, KS; Nancy and Mike Fangman, Overland Park, KS; Rose and Curtis Webb, Atchison, KS; Catherine and Doug Davis, Fillmore, MO; Diane and David Hunt, St. Joseph, MO and 8 grandchildren.

Albert was also preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Francis Stolp.

Lawrence David Schmitt ,79 of Rushville, MO, died Thursday, June 17, 2010 at the Atchison Medicalodge.

Lawrence was born on December 11, 1930 in Arrington, KS., the son of Edward David and Cleta Viela (Reynolds) Schmitt. He was a United States Marine Corps veteran serving from 1952-1954. Mr. Schmitt worked several jobs during his life including as a final inspector for the General Motors Truck and Coach Assembly plant in Pontiac, MI. Later he worked as a buyer for the Rockwell International Steel Foundry and then Atchison Castings working over 21 years before retiring in 1996. He was a member of the Lewis & Clark Baptist Church, St. Joseph, Missouri American Legion Post and enjoyed woodworking, Bible devotions, and witnessing to others. He also enjoyed watching “Deal or No-Deal” on the television, and his dog – “Rascal”.

He was married to Iva “Ruth” Nevitt on April 15, 1951 in Topeka, KS. Mrs. Schmitt preceded him in death on Nov. 18, 2009. Survivors include three sons; David M. (Darlene) Schmitt, Topeka, KS., Douglas M. (Candy) Schmitt, Horton, KS., and Jack (Betti) Schmitt, St. Joseph, MO., a daughter; Heidi Nolte, Atchison, KS., a brother; James L. Schmitt, Riverbank, CA., twenty grandchildren, eighteen great grandchildren and his dog; Rascal. His parents, wife Ruth, two sisters; Marjorie F. Proctor Hamlin, and Luella L. Belden, and a granddaughter; Angel Schmitt all preceded him in death.

Ralph G. Wright, Jr. , 86 of Atchison, KS, died Saturday, June 19,2010 at the Atchison Hospital.

Ralph was born on April 26, 1924 in St. Joseph, Mo., the son of Ralph W. and Marguerite (Donnelly) Wright. He attended grade school in Pardee, Kansas and graduated in 1942 from Atchison County Community High School, Effingham, KS. Ralph worked as a machinist for the former L.F.M, Steel Foundry, Atchison, then for Trans World Airlines. After his retirement he did maintenance for the UMB Bank, Atchison, and then worked for Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Ralph was a member of the Knights of Columbus, was a Past Master of Masonic Lodge #238, Rushville, MO, and a member of the Atchison Masonic Lodge. He received his airplane pilot’s license in 1998 at the age of 74. He would hardly stay out of the air. Ralph was always tinkering with something and enjoyed yard work and greeting people at the funeral home.

He was married to Bernice Van Horn. She preceded him in death on December 25, 1986. He later married Ruthann Meyer on November 26, 1990 at the Atchison United Methodist Church. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include; son-in-law, Larry Montgomery, Cummings, KS, six grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren. His parents, a son; Ralph G. Wright, III (1985), and two daughters; Jean Wright and Sherry Montgomery(2003), preceded him in death.

Albert Henry Bahr, 96, Atchison, passed away, Wednesday, June 16, 2010 at the North Kansas City Hospital, Kansas City, MO.

Albert was born March 3, 1914 in Doniphan, KS the son of the late, Alcid and Anna (Kosman) Bahr. He farmed in Atchison and Doniphan County as a young man and then worked his way up to Supervisor at Pillsbury. He retired after 33 years of service. Albert was of the Christian faith and a member of Odd Fellows Lodge. He enjoyed camping, fishing, hunting, mushroom hunting, visiting with neighbors and friends in his home and by the river. Albert enjoyed meeting and sharing life stories with everyone he met. He always told a good story and was a notorious practical joker. Albert was always willing to go to any length to help neighbors, friends and family in need. He was a kind hearted man who will be greatly missed by his family and everyone who knew him.

He married Margaret Jacobson in 1938 in Troy, KS; she preceded him in death in 1991. Survivors include sons, James (Jeanette) Bahr, Jacksonville, FL and Jerry (Carol) Bahr, Tallahassee, FL; daughters, Judith Anne Cooley, Kansas City, MO and Janet Burke, Atchison, KS; nine grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Frank, Louis and Elmer Bahr and a sister, Helen Roberts.

Richard A. Dyer , 78 years old, of Atchison, KS. died Thursday, June 17, 2010 at his home.

Richard was born on Oct. 24th, 1931 in Atchison the son of Allman and Margaret (Heald) Dyer. He graduated from Atchison High School and served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Richard worked as a welder at the former L.F.M. in Atchison until 1969. He also owned and operated the former Dyer’s Honey Chicken in Atchison, and operated an airport taxi service for many years. He was a member of the First Christian Church, the Elks, the Fleming-Jackson-Seever American Legion Post # 6, Atchison, Benedictine Booster Club, Pineview Golf Course, and Reynolds Coffee Club. Richard enjoyed water skiing, snow skiing, boating, playing golf, and especially his grandchildren, great grandchildren.

He was married to Sharon Young on Oct. 11, 1959 at the First Christian Church in Atchison. Sharon survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son; Rick Dyer, Atchison, KS., sister; Barbara Chalfant, Atchison, KS., seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren. His parents, a brother; James W. Dyer preceded him in death.

Robert E. 'Bob' Bartlett, 82, Atchison, passed away, Friday, June 11, 2010 at the Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, MO.

Bob was born June 2, 1928 in Bethany, MO the son of the late Paul and Bertha (Hendren) Bartlett. He attended schools in Atchison and graduated from Atchison High School 1946. He enlisted in the Army and served his country proudly in Hawaii. Bob worked for Fleming Wholesale Grocery and then moved on to work at Midwest Grain as the Crafts Chief Maintenance Man. He was a member of the VFW Post #1175 and American Legion Post #6. Bob enjoyed going to his Doughnut coffee club, spending time with family, especially at sporting events, and fishing.

Mr. Bartlett married Laura Margaret (Peg) Roe on August 31, 1951. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include sons, Jim and Jane Bartlett, Tom & Kim Bartlett, David Bartlett, all of Atchison and Steve and Karen Bartlett, Camden Point, MO; daughters, Margo and Dave Suhler, Hutchinson, KS and Sandy and Mark Dennis, Oakley, KS; a brother, Bill and Juanita Bartlett, Anniston, AL; sister, Wanda Simeno, Ft. Worth, TX; 18 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

Bob was preceded in death by two grandsons, Paul Suhler and Jason Johnson and a brother-in-law, Jim Simeno.

Harrison L. 'Harry' Baker, 66, Atchison, passed away, Thursday, June 10, 2010 at the Heartland Regional Medical Center following a lengthy illness.

Harrison was born September 19, 1943 in Smithville, MO, the son of Virgil H. and Birdie (Everling) Baker. He attended Float Grade School and graduated from ACCHS in 1962. Harry went to work as a truck driver for We-Mac Manufacturing and then became an Operation Technician for the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant, Independence, MO in 1982, retiring in 2005. He loved dogs and was quite the outdoorsman. Harry enjoyed hunting, fishing, watching NASCAR racing, football and baseball. Harry married Donna Jansen on October 12, 1969. They later divorced.

Survivors include daughters, Tracie Baker, Atchison, KS; Amy Baker, Overland Park, KS; brother, Ronald and his wife JoAnne Baker, Atchison, KS; sister, Janice and her husband, Gary Carson, Independence, MO; 4 nephews, 4 great-nephews and 5 great-nieces.

Harry was preceded in death by his parents and a great niece.

John was born July 17, 1940 in Atchison, KS the son of J.B. “Shorty” and Mabel (Woolston) Park. He had worked as traffic manager for Arnour Conagra, sold real estate and worked as a machine operator for Ward Kraft in Fort Scott. He was a member of the Community of Christian Church. John was a past worship leader and deacon with the Baptist Church in Paola. He worked in the children’s church ministry in Fort Scott. His hobbies include carpentry, building and racing go carts, and listening to country and gospel music.

John married Nancy Jo Footit on June 12, 1964. She preceded him in death in 1986. He married Connie Mae Webb on August 7, 1988 in Rushville, MO, she survives of the home, additional survivors include five sons; Jeff (Vickie) Park, Louisburg, KS, David (Kelly) Park, Overland Park, Barry Park and fiancé Kaylie, Overland Park, KS, James Park, U.S. Army, Fort Polk, Louisiana and Donald Park, of the home; one daughter, Debbie ( Bryan) McClure, Fort Scott, KS; a sister Joyce Rains, Rushville, MO; ten grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Courtney was involved in agriculture his entire life. He was on the Soil Conservation Board, a clerk on the Good Intent School Board, District 12, was a member of the Farm Bureau, Atchison Co-op and he was a 3rd Degree Mason in the Active Masonic Lodge #158. Courtney enjoyed gardening, fishing and hunting.

Courtney married Wanda C. Heyle on January 28, 1949 in Kansas City, KS. She survives of the home. Christine married Robert Wippel in 1941 in Kansas City, KS. He preceded her in death in 1991. She later married Matthew P. Petesch, Jr. on January 18, 1972. He preceded her in death on October 9, 2006. Survivors include her children, Robert Wippel and his wife, Yvonne, St. Joseph, MO; Mark Petesch and his wife, Darlene, Rutherford Glenn, VA; Marcia Ann and her husband, Brent McKinley, Sr., Burlingame, KS; Sharon Thompson and her husband, Don, Meriden, KS; Kenneth Robert Petesch, Topeka, KS; James Albert Petesch, Atchison, KS; Rosemary Hobbs and her husband, Bob, Hiawatha, KS; Sandra Elliot and her husband, Brian, Atchison, KS; Katherine Clem and her husband, John, Huron, KS; Betty Crayton, Kankakee, IL; Rose Williams and her husband, Ed, Valparaiso, IN; 22 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great grandchildren.

Laura was born on January 30, 1922 in Atchison, the daughter of Leslie A. and Nina (Mikesll) Smith. She graduated from Atchison High School. Laura attended many church’s in her life, the last being Faith Bible Fellowship. Laura’s greatest love was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Laura was married to Daniel Teare. Laura passed away on her husband’s birthday and their wedding anniversary. Dan preceded Laura in death on December 1, 1999. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Jack and Les Smith; and a sister, Mary Jane Ross.

Laura is survived by one son, Ron Teare of Atchison; four grandchildren, Daniel Teare of Atchison, Megan (Scott) McGee of Shawnee, KS, Elizabeth (David) Gates of Easton, KS, and Rebecca Teare of Orlando, FL; seven great-grandchildren; one brother, George Smith, Granbury, TX; one sister, Martha Hopkins, La Mesa, CA.

Ralph Charles'Chuck' Smith, 64, of Indianapolis, IN, passed away, May 22, 2010 in Indianapolis.

Chuck was born on August 9, 1945 in Colorado Springs, CO, the son of Ralph Paul and Josephine Mary (Brun) Smith. Chuck served in the US Marine Corps, which was a big part of his life. He served during the Vietnam War and received two purple hearts. Chuck was employed for 20 years at Hockett Motors in auto wholesales. He loved sports and the Indianapolis Colts. He was a free lance Big Brother.

Erma Mae was born November 13, 1923 the daughter of Charles Kaufmann and Clara Scholz and step father Paul Kasselhut. She graduated from Doniphan High School in 1941, Erma waitressed at Thompson Restaurant before she became a Federal meat inspector for Henderson Meat Company, Atchison and Swift Meat Company, St. Joseph, MO. Mrs. Reder was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, Helping Hands Unit and the Meadowlark Club; she enjoyed 4-H, gardening and flowers and making family photo albums.

Erma Mae Kaufmann married William B. Reder on June 29, 1941 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Atchison, KS; he preceded her in death on June 12, 1998. Survivors include a son, DeWayne (Shirley) Reder, Atchison, KS, three grandsons Darren Reder, Atchison, KS, Kerry (Stacy) Reder, Lawrence, KS and Chad (Sara) Reder, St. Joseph, MO and four great grandchildren; Nicholas and Caitlin Reder, Peyton Reder and Elizabeth Barsch. She liked to bowl and loved spending time with her family especially her grandkids. She was an amazing grandma and mother-in-law.

Barbara married Eugene Spencer Helton, Jr. and he preceded her in death in 1989. Patty was born October 11, 1964 in Inglewood, CA, the daughter of Eugene Spencer and Barbara (Keith) Helton, Jr. She graduated from Jefferson County North High School in 1983. She was most recently working in the Sand Department Lab at Bradken. Patty enjoyed camping, racing, and going to garage sales. She was a very caring, loving and thoughtful person with a humongous heart. Her two daughters were her best friends whom she cared for very deeply. Aunt Petey loved her nieces and nephews and could always be caught with a smile on her face and a twizzler in her hand.

Survivors include a boyfriend, Lee Williams, of the home; daughters, Christie Reichart, Hoyt, KS and Ashley Reichart, Salt Lake City, UT, future son-in-law, Aaron Mull, Hoyt, KS; brother, Jimmy Helton, Winchester, KS; sisters, Michelle Kimberlin, Franklinton, LA, Cheryl Diffley, Roscoe, MO and Jeanette Cluck, Troy, KS and several nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great nephews. She also leaves behind her beloved dogs, Max, Oreo, Baby Girl and Greddy.

Marguerite M. Willmeth , 95 of Glen Rose, TX., formerly of Atchison, KS., went to be with her Lord on Friday, May 21, 2010 at her home in Texas.

Marguerite better known as Margie was born on December 30, 1914, in Denton, KS., to John & Ainia (Cunningham) Blair. She later moved to Atchison where she attended Atchison elementary school and graduated from Atchison High School in 1932. She graduated from Mount St. Scholastica College with a B.A. Degree in Education in 1936.

She & Victor V. Willmeth were married at the First Christian Church on April 30, 1941. Margie was a well known school teacher in Atchison. She began her teaching career in a one room school house in Doniphan, County. She taught in the Atchison Public Schools for 39 years before retiring in 1981. She was a member of the First Christian Church, where she served as a deaconess & member of the Board. She was a member and past president of the Retired Teachers Assoc. and received the first National Community Service Award from AARP. She volunteered with the Atchison Hospital Auxiliary in several areas; was past president of the Atchison’s Christian Women’s Club where she taught Bible studies. She was also past president of Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority. Margie made many close friends while teaching, playing bridge and serving her church and community. She also enjoyed traveling in her retirement years. Margie moved to Texas in 2000 to be near her son and family

She is survived by two children, daughter Vicki (Douglas) Leafblad, Gurnee, Il., and son; Vincent (Priscilla) Willmeth, Granbury, TX., ten grandchildren; Jeff, Greg and Brad Indlecoffer and families, Jennifer Huff, Kevin Willmeth and family, Amy, Carrie, Cory, and Craig Leafblad and families. She also has 22 great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ainia & John Blair, her husband Vic, her brother, Bill Blair, and one grandson, Curtis Leafblad.

Connie was born January 11, 1942 in Horton, KS, the daughter of Clayton and Ruth (Coffelt) Kimmi. She worked as a beautician and a custodial engineer, but mainly a homemaker. Connie was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church and a 4-H Leader, member of Kansas Prairie Pickers, she was key board player for Stoney Pointe Country Band from 1980 to 1986. She liked collecting tooth pick holders, cross-stitching, playing piano and her computer

Connie Louise Kimmi married Tom Wilson on April 9, 1961 in Everest, KS , he survives of the home. Lola was born March 6, 1930 in Toledo, OH, the daughter of Louis G. and Anna G. (Blaesing) Martens. She had worked as a Union Arbitrator for the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW) and as a Corporate Engineering Executive Secretary for KCTV Channel 5. Lola liked collecting Doll House Miniatures and raising flowers. She was a magnificent person who will be missed by many.

She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers, William, Walter, Robert ‘Bob’ and Theodore ‘Ted’ Martens.

Ed was born on August 3, 1924 in rural Lancaster, KS, the son of Otto and Hulda (Wehking) Kanning. He graduated from Atchison County Community High School in Effingham. Ed was a dairy and agricultural farmer his entire life in the Lancaster area. Ed was a member of the Atchison First Christian Church, where he served as a Deacon and Elder. He especially enjoyed visiting and talking with the shut-ins. Ed was a former 4-H Club leader and former school board member for the Lancaster Grade School and Atchison County Community High School. Ed was a member of the Soil Conservation District Board and had received the Kansas Bankers Award for Soil Conservation twice, the most recent in 2008.

Ed and Esther Mae Wells were married on March 11, 1946 at the First Christian Church in Atchison. Esther Mae preceded Ed in death on October 3, 2007. Ed was also preceded in death by his parents, and two sisters, Eileen Knudson and Lavern Dockweiler.

Survivors include a son; David and his wife Tracy Kanning, and their children, Alyson, Erin and her husband, Matt Vaupel, and Andrew Kanning, Lancaster, KS; two daughters, Joyce Courtney and her son, Michael Shane Courtney, St. Louis, MO and Nina and her husband, Rick Wuestling, and their children, Caroline and John Wuestling, St. Louis, MO.

Walter Henry Page, 87, Winchester, KS, died, Sunday, May 9, 2010 at the V.A. Medical Center of Topeka.

Walter was born July 18, 1922 in Atchison County south of Effingham, the son of Charles Henry and Una Mae (Wright) Page. He graduated from ACCHS in 1940 and worked at the Berry Hatchery in Atchison from 1940-1942. Walter enlisted in the Army Air Force November 12, 1942 and was discharged in 1946. He worked for Clan Leighton’s Garage in Nortonville from the spring of 1946 until 1949, Meyer’s Milk Plant in Valley Falls until 1951, NC State Arsenal 1954-1961, Denison Feed Mill Co-op and Atchison Caves for 11 years.

Walter married Elsie Gontz on July 15, 1944 in Atchison, KS at the First Christian Church. She preceded him in death on February 16, 1995. He was also preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother and 4 sisters.

Survivors include a son, Calvin and Elizabeth Page Holton, KS, three grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

David Lloyd Hartsock, 83, formerly of Atchison, passed away, Saturday May 1, 2010 at his home in Neodesha, KS.

David was born October 15, 1926 in Hiawatha, KS, the son of Alfred and Hulda Myrtle (Ebeling) Hartsock. He attended school in Doniphan and joined the U.S. Army where he served in Germany and was on the Mark Clark Honor Guard. Dave had worked as a Mill Operator, among other things, at Pillsbury’s for over 30 years retiring on Ground Hog’s Day, 1987. He enjoyed looking at old cars and trucks, telling stories and mowing lawns. David loved listening to Patsy Cline, Anne Murray and watching Buster Keaton. One of David’s greatest joys was hanging out at the Senior Citizen’s Center visiting with people. He was a member of the American Legion Post #6, Atchison.

Dave married Isla ‘Maxine’ Smith on June 11, 1970 in Atchison. She preceded him in death on March 10, 1994. He was also preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Luanna Hartsock- Speigel; and sons, Robert and Henry Hartsock and David Strathman.

She also enjoyed music and walking wherever she needed to go. Irene was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, Atchison.

Irene’s parents; two brothers, Warren and Dwight Leak; two infant twin sisters, preceded her in death.

She was a member of the Seventh Day Baptist Church in Nortonville, the Kansas Chapter of the Mayflower Society, Non-commissioned Officer’s Association and a former member of the DAR (Daughters of the American Revolution). Yvonne loved to flower garden, arrange flowers, do crafts, and shopping.

Yvonne and Melvin Lockhart were united in marriage on October 14, 1963 in Leavenworth, KS. He survives of the home. Katrina loved going on vacations and taking trips to the park with her family. She had an extremely outgoing personality that will be missed by many.

Bunny was born on July 9, 1942 in Portis, KS. the daughter of Arthur and Mabel (Beach) Garrison. Mrs. Linden had worked as a waitress for the former Hotel Atchison, as a nurse’s aid for the Atchison Hospital, and Saunders Mop Factory. She also owned and operated “Bunny’s Country Kennels & Grooming business. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, were she served as a Kennedy Caller and on the Fellowship Committee. She was active in the Parent-Teacher Association as her children were in school and enjoyed making porcelain dolls, sewing, writing poetry, and singing.

She was married to Richard Linden on Jan. 18, 1960 in Atchison, KS. Mr. Linden survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son; Richard “Rick” Linden, Cummings, KS., daughter; Julie (Greg) Avey, Atchison, KS. , sister; Sherry Dunn, Atchison, KS., and four grandchildren; Gregor (Alex) Avey, Amanda Avey, Sam Avey, of Atchison and Brice Linden , Cummings, KS.

Lois enjoyed traveling, reading, yard work; she especially enjoyed her grandchildren, great grandchildren and her family.

Lois Madden married Leon Mottin on August 13, 1960 at St. Ann’s Catholic Church; he preceded her in death on August 22, 1969. Morley L. Fultz, Sr. 84, of Atchison, KS, passed away Friday, April 23, 2010 at the Atchison Senior Village.

Morley was born July 12, 1925 in Stillwater, Oklahoma, the son of Allen and Wilma F. (Moore) Fultz. Soon after, they moved to Atchison and Morley attended the Oak Mills Grade School and Atchison Public Schools. Morley entered military service during World War II and served overseas in the US Army at Omaha Beach and in Germany. Upon returning to Atchison, Morley worked as a mechanic for numerous car garages in Atchison until 1966 when he went to work for the former Midwest Solvents (MGP). He worked as a maintenance mechanic with Midwest until he retired in 1988.

Morley was member of the Church of the Nazarene and the Atchison VFW Post #1175. He enjoyed working with his hands, working on cars and could fix anything. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and being with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Morley was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Alvin and Myrten Fultz; three sisters, Rosella Fowler, Juanita Daniels, and Vera Whitney; a granddaughter, Carrie Fultz.

Morley and Leonore M. Hale were united in marriage on September 10, 1949 in Troy, KS. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son, Morley L. ‘Chip’ Fultz, Jr. and his wife, Elaine, of Atchison; four grandsons, Morley L. ‘Larry’ Fultz and his wife, Jessica, David L. Mr. Hayes served in the U.S. Army, 51st Artillery Division, during the Korean Conflict. He worked as a heavy equipment operator for many different companies, including JA Tobin, WA Ellis, and Lexeco Construction. Mr. Hayes was admired for his finish hand dozer skills and had worked at many large projects in Kansas City including the construction of the Kansas City International Airport runways, the Long View Lake, and the Harbor in Warsaw, MO. Glen was a member of the First Christian Church, and the Hoisting & Portable Operating Engineers Local 101, Kansas City. He enjoyed woodworking, remodeling homes, mechanic work on and restoring old cars. He was a “handy man” who could work on or fix anything.

Glen was married to Sally Bigelow on Aug 23, 1953 at the First Christian Church, Atchison, KS. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include three sons; Chris Hayes, St. Joseph, Mo., Kirk Hayes, Lee Summit, Mo., and Omar Abbud, Brasilia, Brazil. Two brothers; Robert “Bob” Hayes, Topeka, KS., Ronald Hayes, Oak Grove, MO., a sister; Sharon Davis, Bakersfield, CA., two grandsons, three granddaughters, five great granddaughters, and four great grandsons.

Allie “Marie” Bell was born on June 15, 1925 in Portland, TN the daughter of James Henry and Lucille (Pardue ) Bell. She graduated from Portland High School. She moved from Portland, TN to Louisville, KY, then in 1969 they moved to Manhattan, KS. where she worked as a receptionist for Dr. Durkee and Boese for 10 years. In 2000 she moved to West Liberty, Iowa and in 2008 to Atchison, KS. Marie enjoyed needlework, and cross-stitch, reading, and traveling.

She was married to Alvin L. Zimmerman, Sr. on Nov. 24, 1946 in Louisville, KY. Mr. Zimmerman preceded her in death in 1978. Survivors include a son; Rev. Alvin (Cindy) Zimmerman, Jr., of Atchison, KS., two daughters; Susan (John) Golob, Kansas City, MO., and Sandra (Barney) Doyle, Albuquerque, NM. a brother; Edward Bell, Tampa, FL., five grandchildren, Jeffrey Lee Doyle, Allie Jeanne Hamilton, Thaddeus Jeremiah Zimmerman, Colette Suzette Hamilton, and Heidi Marie Zimmerman, and also four great grandchildren, Chloe Michele Doyle, Maliyah Victoria Carrell, Allen Lamar Duren, and Caelen A. Lois was born June 12, 1917 on a farm in Nortonville, Kansas the daughter of Irvin and Avery Camblin. Lois married H. Elvin Jones in 1936 and moved to Atchison. Lois and Elvin divorced in 1954, they had two daughters, Loretta Louise and Barbara Rea. She met Hubert (Cub) Beyer and they were married July 10, 1956 and lived on the Beyer family farm near Arrington. After Hubert’s death in 1986 she married Clennen Keller in 1989 and returned to Atchison.

Lois was very active in the community, HDU and 4-H. Lois was a member of the First Christian Church of Atchison and was awarded Deaconess Emeritus in 2006. Lois was active in Eastern Star for 76 years and the Atchison Hospital Auxiliary in several capacities for over 15 years.

Surviving are daughters Loretta and Barbara, grandchildren and great-grand children.

Evelyn was born June 8, 1914 in Trigo County, KS, the daughter of Harry and Nellie (Shell) Bell. She lived in the Larkinburg Community until she was united in marriage to Martin Ray on November 13, 1937 in Holton. They made their home in the Muscotah Community.

She worked at the Horton & Holton Garment Company until she retired after twenty years. She was a member of the Larkinburg Christian Church and life member of the Order of Eastern Star. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, four brothers, and one sister.

Survivors include a son, John and wife, Elizabeth Ray, Muscotah; daughter, Marilyn and husband, Paul Dresch, El Dorado Springs; brother, Ralph Bell, Oroville, CA; grandchildren, Tina (James) Torkelson, Robinson, Tammy (Duane) Sinclair, Everest, Troy (Brenda) Dresch, Kansas City, MO, Tracy (Debbie) Dresch, Independence, MO, Terri Dresch, El Dorado Springs; twelve great grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren.

Diane G. Elliott was born on July 3rd, 1935 in Hiawatha, KS. the daughter of G.R. and Lyle M. (Hegenderfer) Elliott. She graduated from Hiawatha High School in 1952 and has attended classes at Highland College and Kansas University. She worked as a para-professional for USD# 409 Schools in Atchison for twenty-six years. She retired in 1994. Diane was a member of the Atchison United Methodist Church since 1964.She had taught Sunday school for over 32 years, served as finance secretary for the church, and helped with Vacation Bible School. Diane was a member of the United Methodist Women, the Eve’s Circle, Church Choir and the Atchison Historical Society. She enjoyed gardening flowers and vegetables, sewing, crafts, and travel.

Diane was married to James M. Eichelberger on July 6, 1952 in Hiawatha, KS. Mr. Eichelberger survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son; Kevin D. George O. Gigstad, 94, of Nortonville KS passed away Monday April 5, 2010 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, KS.

George was born on July 10, 1915 to Gustav and Elizabeth Gigstad in Lancaster KS. On Dec. 7th, 1941he joined the Army. After basic training he was sent to aircraft mechanic school. After he had taken the entire air cadet tests he had been selected for Air Cadet training. He went through the usual training and was commissioned in the United States Army Air Corp. He was qualified as a first pilot on the B-17 and B-24 and assigned to the Second Air Division, BBG 446th, Flixton Air Base, Bungay, England, their first mission on what is now known as the “big week” in Feb. of 1944. This was the allies big air bombardment push prior to D-Day. Between February and May of 1944 they flew 30 missions and were only the second crew of that bomb group to complete 30 missions, he earned the DFC (Distinguished Flying Cross) for those missions. Mr. Gigstad owned and operated Gigstad Fertilizer and Agricultural Company for 25 years and in his “spare time” farmed 350 acres. He was the Nortonville city mayor for many years and served on the City Council. George was member of the Nortonville United Methodist Church, 446th BBG Association and Second Air Divisions Association, a lifetime member of the American Legion, he enjoyed traveling reading, aggravating his daughters and spending time with his grandson.

He married Leona Windscheffel on December 28, 1947 she survives of the home, additional survivors include, two daughters Katherine Gigstad , Platte City, MO, Patricia Gigstad, Nortonville KS, a son; Dwight (Shawn) Gigstad, Nortonville, KS and a grandson; George Oliver Gigstad II, one brother Albert Gigstad, Nortonville, KS, two sisters; Marie Niemann, Nortonville, KS , Mildred Hawk, Effingham, KS. He is preceded in death by his parents, a brother John Gigstad and two sisters; Evelyn Foster and Irene Toedter.

Thomas was born on June 14, 1932 in Atchison the son of the late Jess and Helen (Christian) Torbett. After graduating from Atchison High School in 1951, Thomas joined the United States Navy and served during the Korean War from 1951 to 1954 and in the Naval Reserves for ten years. Thomas worked as a machinist at the former LFM, Rockwell, and Atchison Casting; retiring in 1994. Thomas was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church, American Legion Post # 6, and he enjoyed woodworking and fishing.

Thomas and Elaine E. Moore were married on August 18, 1984 at South Park Methodist Church in St. Joseph, MO. Elaine survives of the home. He is also survived by daughters, Deann Torbett, Atchison, Leslie Bartley, Horton, KS, Kim Howard and Candy Locke both of Independence, MO, Claudia Kowalewski, Leavenworth; one stepdaughter, Tracey Skinner of Pelahatchie, MS; two stepsons, David Elliott and Brian Elliott, both of Atchison; one sister, Doris Falen, Atchison; seven grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; two great granddaughters and one great grandson.

June was born June 22, 1909 in Troy, KS the daughter of the late Arthur Berry and Lulu (Hunsaker) Monroe. She graduated from Bendena High School and Highland Community College. June retired as a Director in the Welfare Department in Troy and had also taught school for a number of years. As a child June played the cello. She was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church, Bendena, and the Cheerios Unit. June enjoyed cooking and was especially known for her bread and angel food cake. She loved all animals, but had a special fondness of cats.

Survivors include a niece, Janice Coelho, CA; nephew, Dwight Keininger, CA and 8 great nieces and nephews.

June was also preceded in death by her sisters, Lucille Monroe Keininger and Georgia Monroe Scholz.

Leonard was born on December 3, 1915 in Atchison, KS. the son of Conrad and Emma (Flaschbarth) Handke. He attended Deer Creek School, north of Atchison and graduated from Atchison High School in 1933. Leonard was a lifelong farmer-farming north of Atchison on Hwy 7. He was also a dairyman for many years. As a young man he would bottle the milk and make home deliveries to customers in Atchison. Mr. Handke was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church. He served on the Deer Creek School Board, was a member of the Atchison County ASCS Committee in Effingham starting in 1954. He served as Chairman of the ASCS Committee from 1957 to 1975. He was a member of the Atchison County Dairy Board and the Atchison County Farmers Union CO-OP Assn. from 1968-1983. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting and bowling. Later in life he enjoyed riding around the country looking at crops and farmland.

Leonard and the former Ruby Armstrong were married on June 8, 1938 in Bendena, KS. Together they celebrated 61 years of marriage. Ruby preceded him in death in June 1999. Survivors include a son; Larry (Janice) Handke, Atchison, KS., a daughter; Jeanne (Richard) Durkin, Atchison, three grandchildren, and five great grandchildren. His parents, one brother; Gilbert Handke, and a sister; Ruth Handke Peterson also preceded him in death.

Wayne Alan Stuck was born on January 1st, 1947 the first of five children to Dennis W. and Betty Lou (Hathaway) Stuck. He grew up in Alma, NE. and graduated from Alma High School in 1965. Mr. Stuck graduated from Peru State College in 1970 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics. Mr. Stuck joined the U.S. Air Force in 1970, serving for 20 years, retiring as a Major. During those 20 years, his greatest joys were being a navigator on a KC-135 air refueling plane and a navigator on a F-4 Phantom jet. He took great honor in serving his country. Teaching became his second career. Mr. Stuck taught special education at USD#377, Effingham, KS. and then high school math at USD# 430, Horton, KS. He was an active member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lancaster, KS. and proudly served on the church council for many years. He was a member of the Lancaster/Huron Volunteer Fire Department and the Lancaster Lions Club. Wayne enjoyed being with his family, serving others, watching football, especially Nebraska, reading, and traveling. He was also engaged in farming.

He married Elaine Flattre from Lancaster, KS. on July 26, 1970 at Zion Lutheran Church, Everest, KS. Mrs. Stuck survives of the home. Additional survivors include two daughters; Stacy (Christopher) Montero, Las Vega, NV., and Kelly Stuck, Lancaster, KS. His father, Dennis Stuck, Alma, NE., two brothers; James Stuck, Nebraska City, NE., and John D. Stuck, Grand Island, NE., two sisters; Judy Bickford, West Liberty, Iowa, and Katheryn Makinen, Rawlins, WY., thirteen nieces and nephews, and several great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Betty Lou Stuck.

Phyllis was a feisty one and enjoyed laughing and having fun.

Phyllis McKee married Ronald Morland on March 14, 1963, he survives of the home, additional survivors include two sons; Matthew (Ellen) Morland, Louisburg, KS, Jason (Jaime) Morland, Great Plains MD, five grandchildren; Camryn, Coltyn, Chelsea, Jesse and Kalli Morland and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Fred was born July 17, 1934 in Atchison, KS the son of the late David and Carol (Hern) Kottman. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1952 and served in the United States Army from 1957-1959 in Anchorage, AK. Fred was a member of the Rushville Lions Club, the Elks Lodge #647, Atchison, KS, a Deacon at the Rushville Christian Church and had been the Fire Chief for the Rushville Volunteer Fire Department. Fred had worked in the antique business most of his life opening the Pink Barn with his father in 1956. He loved what he did and all the people he met. Fred enjoyed telling stories and taking people on tours of Atchison, where he was proud to say he was from. Most of all, Fred cherished time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Fred married Phyllis Rathburn in 1966 in Atchison. She survives of the home in Rushville. Additional survivors include sons, Charles (Kylee) Kottman, Atchison, Steven (Paula) Stacy, Rolla, MO; daughters, Toni (Ramsey) Hagan, Eudora, KS, Susan (James) Klawuhn, Rushville, MO; brother, Robert Kottman, Holton, KS; 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

James L. Perkins, 78 years old, of Atchison, KS, died Sat. March 20, 2010 at the Kansas University Medical Center, in Kansas City, KS.

James L. Perkins was born on December 4, 1931 in Atchison, KS, the son of Frank and Mae (Rafferty) Perkins. He was an Eagle Scout, and graduated from Atchison High School in 1949. Jim worked for the Maintenance Department for Fourteen years at Maur-Hill Prep School, Atchison, and then as a salesman for the Country Side Mobile Home Sales for many years. Mr. Perkins was a member of St. Benedict's Church, was a Third Degree fifty year member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a Scoutmaster for Troop 53 for many years and enjoyed woodworking.

He was married to Rose M. (Zishka) on May 19, 1951 at St. Joseph’s Church, Nortonville. Mrs. Perkins preceded him in death on Jan. 15, 2010. Raymond Kessler, 99, passed away March 14, 2010 in Atchison. He was born in the St. Louis Church area north of Atchison, September 1, 1910 to Joseph C. and Anna Handke Kessler. He moved with his parents to the Denton, KS area in 1923 and graduated from Denton High School in 1929.

Ray and Alida Brown were married on February 22, 1932 and spent their entire married life in Denton.

Ray farmed and did carpenter work in the area as a young man. He was a mechanic and worked for W.F. Pinyard Garage, then purchased the business. He was an electrician doing TV and radio repair for over 40 years in Doniphan County. Ray spent 2 ½ years in World War II with the 220th Armored Engineers, serving time in the European Theatre, being discharged as a Tech 3rd Class.

He was a member of the Denton Methodist Church, Life Member of the VFW and American Legion, Atchison, Life Member of Leona Sportsman Club and he belonged to the Senior Citizens Pitch Club in Denton. Ray enjoyed fishing and all sports, especially baseball.

His wife, parents, brother, Edwin, sisters, Mickey Davis and Ruth Gilmore are deceased. He is survived by niece Dr. Barbara Davis, Lewiston, ID; nephew, Ron Kessler, Austin TX and niece, Barbara Craft, Manhattan, KS; several grand nieces and nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, March 20, 2010 at the Denton United Methodist Church. Burial will follow in the Denton Cemetery. Darlene was born January 3, 1942 in Denver CO, the daughter of Glenn and Virginia (Douglass) Garrett. Mrs. Kley was a woman of many skills, bookkeeper for family trucking company to driving the trucks, doing construction, being a cook and teaching pre-school. She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and American Quarter Horse Association. She enjoyed horseback riding, gardening, bowling, sewing, crocheting, cooking and coffee; she especially loved her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Darlene Garrett married Roger Kley on June 1, 1969 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Atchison KS. He survives of the home. She worked as a CMA and nurse’s aid for Cray Manor, Atchison Medicalodge and then the Dooley Center before retiring in 1996. Carol was a member of the Hoover Christian Church, Platte City, Mo. , enjoyed Gospel singing, studying the Bible and was a Bible Scholar, enjoyed writing poetry, doing family genealogy and reading.

She married to Don Trower on Sept. 29, 1951 at the First Christian Church, Atchison; they have been married for 58 years. Mr. Trower survives of the home. Jean Frances Boydston was born on September 27, 1924 in Holton, KS the daughter of Howard C. and Clara Lillian (May) Boydston. She attended grade school in Holton, junior high in Ozawkie, KS and Washburn University after she moved to Topeka. Jean had worked at Atchison Leather Products, Mt. St. Scholastica Dormitory and the former Atchison Hotel. She was a member of the Congregation of Jehovah’s Witness in Atchison and Topeka. Mrs. Hysten enjoyed sewing, raising chickens and flowers. She was an excellent cook who cherished time spent with her grandchildren.

Jean was married to Clem C. Hysten on Feb. 15, 1939 in Topeka, KS. Mr. Hysten preceded her in death on March 22, 1998. Her parents, son, Richard Hysten; daughter, Cynthia Hysten; brothers, Robert L. and Charles M. Hyman and sisters, Betty Nelson and Marian L. Morgan also preceded her in death.

Opal was born on Oct. 8, 1912 in Piermont, MO, the daughter of John C. and Wilhelmine “Minnie” (Koch) Witte. She attended Trinity Lutheran Grade School, Atchison, KS. She moved to East Atchison (Winthrop) from Stover, MO, resided there for 69 years. She moved to Texas for a short period and then back to Atchison, KS, in July 2009. Opal had worked at the Stein Laboratories, F.W. Woolworths as a clerk for many years and at the Saunders Mop Factory for 16 years, retiring in 1972. Opal was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, the Martha Circle, and Mission of Love, both of Trinity Lutheran, and enjoyed fishing, gardening, sewing and working with flowers.

She was married to Albert Marvin Davis on Aug. 26, 1933 at Trinity Lutheran Church. Mr. Davis preceded her in death on May 23, 1978. Marilyn A. 'Sparkie' Scherer, 54, of Atchison, passed away, Sunday, February 21, 2010 at the Atchison Medicalodge with her loving family by her side.

Sparkie was born January 2, 1956 in Atchison, KS, the daughter of Lawrence H. and Louise ‘Betty Lou’ (Gronniger) Scherer. She attended school at St. Louis Parish Hall and then graduated from ACCHS in 1974. Sparkie worked as a secretary for Gottschalk & Company for many years. She was a member of the St. Louis Church Altar Society and was a long time youth group leader. Sparkie cherished her many trips to Branson, MO. She enjoyed camping with her family, shopping, fishing and her dog, Hoss. Spark was a lover of nature, taking in creatures of all kinds. She especially enjoyed feeding and watching birds. Most of all, Sparkie cherished time spent with her family. She would make cakes for all occasions for her nieces and nephews, who she cared for deeply. Sparkie worked tirelessly, caring for her mother until she passed away in November, 2009.

Survivors include brothers, Henry (Bonnie), Jerome and Carl Scherer; sister, Rita (Chris) Jones, all of Atchison; nieces and nephews, Kristie Wessel, Mike Scherer, Teresa Hegarty, Brad, Brian and Bruce Spilman, Amy Seager, Cole Scherer, Corey, Derek and Tyler Jones and numerous great-nieces and great-nephews.

Sparkie was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Dorothy Spilman.

Phyllis LaVerne Lewis, 72, was called home to be with the Lord February 16th. She died of natural causes, at her home in Overland Park, KS and was found by her sister February 17th.

Services will be held Wednesday February 24th at 2:00 PM at the Effingham Union Church with burial in the Effingham Evergreen Cemetery. Phyllis will lie in state for one hour preceding the service where the family will receive visitors. She was also a member of the Emmanuel Baptist Church in Overland Park where she sang in the choir.

Phyllis was born May 3, 1937 on the farm near Effingham, first daughter of Raymond and Mary Broyles. She grew up in Effingham and was a devoted servant of the Lord, mother, daughter, grandmother, sister and friend who remained very active even while devoting much time to caring for her mother in recent years.

Survivors are her mother Mary Sharp of the home, two sons, Kenneth (Barbara) Lewis of Michigan, David (Tamra) Lewis of California, and grandsons, Craig, Alexander, Kenneth, Corey and two great-grandchildren. She also leaves three sisters, Esther (Arthur) Figueroa of California, Linda (Calvin) Burch and Rosemary (Robert) Hiebsch of Kansas City, along with many nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends.

Joyce was born August 17, 1940 in Atchison, KS the daughter of William and Dorothy (Hampton) Navinskey. She graduated from Mt. Saint Scholastica in 1958 and began working for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company. She was a trainer for SBC working her way up to supervisor before she retired. She enjoyed square dancing, dancercise, camping, and gardening. Joyce was a CCD instructor for many years and volunteered at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church in Pharr, TX and also for the Tip O Texas RV Park. She also enjoyed trips to South Padre Island and loved going to the casino.

She married Richard Haupt on August 26, 1958 at Sacred Heart. He preceded her in death on July 9, 2008. Survivors include three sons, Greg and Michelle Haupt, St. Joseph, MO; Leland Haupt, Gladstone, MO and LaMonte Haupt, Kansas City, MO; brother, Edward Navinskey, Cummings, KS; sisters, Frances Handke, Atchison; Carol Erpelding, Atchison; Virginia Schrick, Winchester, KS; and Janet Myers, Cummings, KS; 4 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Artie Belle Benjamin, 84, of Kellogg, Idaho passed away February 16, 2010 at the Shoshone Medical Center of Kellogg, Idaho. She was born October 17, 1925 in Everest, Kansas; Artie was the daughter of Charles Calvin and Anna Irene (Eyer) Blankenship.

Artie attended and graduated from the Atchison County Community High School of Effingham, Kansas in 1943; she then attended college. Artie married John Benjamin on June 4, 1949 at Effingham, Kansas. They moved to the Silver Valley (Kellogg, Idaho) in 1955 from Kansas.

Artie taught in the Atchison County Community school district for seven years. She had also worked at the Kellogg Floral and Gift of Kellogg, Idaho for many years.

Artie was a member of the St. Rita’s Catholic Church of Kellogg, Idaho for fifty-five years; she was also a member of the Catholic Daughters and the Rosary Group. Artie loved and enjoyed bowling, fishing, gardening, crocheting and craft work.

Artie is survived by her beloved husband, John Benjamin of the family home of Kellogg, Idaho; two brothers, Charles Ernest Blankenship of Topeka, Kansas, Albert Leroy Blankenship of San Jose, California; three sister-in-laws, JoAnn Benjamin of San Bernardino, California, Frances Benjamin of Highland, California and Marge Blankenship of Topeka, Kansas; Artie is the proud Aunt of seventeen nieces and nephews, forty-nine great-nieces and nephews and fifty-seven great-great nieces and nephews. Harold was born on August 3, 1928 in Sweet Springs, MO, the son of Rev. A.J. and Bertha (Wiebusch) Becker. He attended schools in Sweet Springs, MO, Slater, MO, Concordia, MO and graduated from Palmyra High School in 1946. He went to work for the Robey-Robinson Lumber Yard in Palmyra prior to entering the military. He served overseas in the US Army Field Artillery during the Korean War from February 1951 until November 1952. When Harold returned from military duty, he again worked for the lumberyard until he began working for, and eventually managed, the Ben Franklin Store in Palmyra. He left there and worked as an Assistant Manager for the Quincy (IL) Farm and Home Supply for over 20 years.

In 1986, Harold and his wife, JoAnne, moved to Atchison and he worked with his sons at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. After Harold retired, they moved back to Palmyra in 1996 where he worked part-time for Lewis Brothers Funeral Chapel. Harold and JoAnne have been living the past two years in Atchison with their son, Bryan.

Harold was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Boots-Dickson American Legion Post and the Norfolk-Smith VFW Post # 11041, all of Palmyra. He had been a former member of the Lutheran Laymen’s League at Zion and a bowling league secretary for over 10 years. He enjoyed woodworking, fishing, growing tomatoes, watching the St. Louis Cardinals Baseball team and especially his grandchildren. Harold was looking forward to welcoming his first great-grandchild this coming May.

Harold was married to JoAnne Sutton on December 16, 1950 at Zion Lutheran Church. She survives of the home in Atchison. Additional survivors include three sons; David & Maureen Smallwood Becker, St. Louis, MO, Bryan & Pattie Becker, Atchison, KS, and Paul and Tonya Becker, Nortonville, KS; three sisters, Norma Schade, Palmyra, MO, Carolyn (Marvin) Myers, Hannibal, MO, and Emily Becker, Quincy, Il; six grandchildren, Christina (Aidan) Dunleavy, Omaha, NE, Tim (Sara) Becker, Effingham, KS, Matt (fiancé Shannon Johnson) Becker, Manhattan, KS, Andrew Becker, Nortonville, Rachel Allen and Kelly Carnal, both of St. Louis; two nieces, Joy (Rodney) Williams and Nancy (Jim) Schaefer, both of Palmyra; one nephew, Denny (Judy) Myers, Palmyra.

Richard 'Dick' McCue, 68, of Atchison, passed away Thursday, February 04, 2010 at his son’s home.

Richard was born November 27, 1941 in Philadelphia, PA the son of John and Margaret (Thompson) McCue. He graduated from South Philadelphia High School and joined the United States Air Force. Dick was a work control technician in the Air Force. He had worked at Northwest Pipe as a Machine Operator, retiring in 2006. Dick was a member of the VFW and an extremely hard worker.

Survivors include three sons, Kevin, of Atchison, Ryan, of St. Joseph, MO, and Kelly of North Carolina.

Jerry Maurice Laflin, 77, Bendena, KS, passed away, Sunday, January 31, 2010 at the Heartland Regional Medical Center.

Jerry was born February 19, 1932 in Newton, IA, the son of the late Ray Delbert and Levena Minnesota (Cammack) Laflin. He graduated from High School in 1949 and then graduated from the University of Iowa in 1955 with a degree in Pharmacy. Jerry served in the US Air Force from 1955-1959 where he was stationed in Fairbanks, AK and Salina, KS. Mr. Laflin also worked for the Civil Service in Salina and Clovis, NM at the Cannon AFB. In 1975 he began working for the Department of the Army as a pharmacist at the Army Hospital in Ft. Riley, KS, until his retirement in 1998. Upon retirement, Jerry and Phyllis moved to Bendena, KS to be closer to family. He was a member of the Audubon Society where he went on many Christmas Bird Counts throughout the state of Kansas. Jerry was an avid Bible scholar who taught Sunday school for over 30 years and a bible study at Vintage Park for four years. He enjoyed his flower gardening, reading books, collecting stamps and playing tennis in his younger days. Most of all, Jerry enjoyed time spent with his family, especially his grandchildren.

Jerry is survived by his wife of 54 years, Phyllis (Giles) Laflin. They were married on March 4, 1955 in Red Oak, IA. Additional survivors include sons, Michael Ray (Karen Sue) Laflin, Grayville, IL, Rea David (Karen Jo) Laflin, Atchison, KS; a daughter, Rachel Elizabeth (Vern) Miller, Thermopolis, WY, and seven grandchildren.

He was also an accomplished artist, creating beautiful landscape oil paintings.

Carl E. Surritt , 90, Atchison, KS. died Sunday, Jan. 31st, 2010 at the Atchison Medicalodge.

Mr. Surritt will be cremated and a private family service will be held at a later date.The Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Carl was born on Jan. 17, 1920 in Atchison, KS. the son of Roy Grover and Mary (Smith) Surritt. He graduated from Atchison High School. Mr. Surritt owned and operated the former Surritt Garage in Atchison.

He was married to Velma Bidding on Oct. 1, 1940. Mrs Surritt preceded him in death on Aug 23, 1960. After Velma’s death, he relocated to California. There he married Maria Martin in l980. They later divorced. He relocated to St. Joseph, MO., and was employed by the St. Joseph Convention & Visitors Center.

Survivors include two sons; Carl (Carolyn) Surritt, Atchison, KS., and Thomas (Heidi) Surritt, St. Joseph, MO., a daughter; Donna Peak, Phoenix, AZ., a brother; Roy Surritt, Monrovia, KS., six grandchildren, four great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren. His parents and three sisters also preceded him in death.

Esther was born on March 16th, 1916 in Cummings, KS. the daughter of August and Anna (Wohlgemuth) Bodenhausen. She graduated from Camp Creek School District #28, and attended Atchison High School for one year. She had worked in the family home for 11 years, the Horton Garment Factory nine years, and the Atchison Hospital Laundry for 2 ½ years. Esther was a member of the Camp Creek United Methodist Church, where she was the Primary and Nursery Sunday School Teacher for many years. She was a member of the United Methodist Women, and church janitor for 8 years. Mrs. Neill enjoyed gardening, babysitting grandchildren, sewing, making quilts, gooseberry pies, and cookies for family and friends.

Esther married Curtis Neill on May 16th, 1942 in DeRidder, LA., Mr. Neill preceded her in death on Nov. 17, 2008. Her parents and four sisters; Ruth Graner, Edith Bodenhausen, Helen Neill and Alice Becker also preceded her in death. Survivors include two sons; Rev. Charlie (Barbara) Neill, Atchison, KS., Robert (Karen) Neill, Cummings, KS., two daughters; Shirley Neill, Atchison, KS., and Barbara (Cliff) Metcalfe, Cummings, KS., seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

Conrad was born July 25, 1929 in White Cloud, KS the son of James William and Mable Clair (Mershon) McConnaughey. He attended Atchison High School and then joined the Army. Conrad worked as a heavy equipment diesel mechanic for ASARCO in Tuscan, AR for 27years. He was a member of the First Christian Church and Lions Club in Everest, KS. Conrad enjoyed tinkering and puttering around the house. He was a handyman that could fix nearly anything in the house. Connie was also an avid reader of western novels.

He married Leila Behler on June 10, 1951 in Everest, KS, she survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son, Michael (Gaylene) McConnaughey, Pittsburg, KS; daughter, Phyllis (Dwight) Scholz, Lancaster, KS; a sister, Mable (Boots) Moore, Atchison, KS, grandchildren, Bryan (Megan) Ford, Timothy (Kate) McConnaughey and Jared (Andrea) McConnaughey, great grandchildren; Adrienne and Benjamin McConnaughey and Jacob McConnaughey.

Conrad was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Joseph and Lawrence McConnaughey and a sister Clair Jean Kautz.

Katherine E. McClenahan was born on Sept. 19th, 1921 in Topeka, KS. the daughter of Robert and Winnie (Schaefer) McClenahan. She had attended schools in Highland Park, KS, and Sterling College, Sterling, KS. Katherine was married to Charles D. Stinson on May 14, 1942 in Topeka, KS. She worked at the Santa Fe Railroad offices during World War II, taught piano and was a pre-school teacher for the YMCA, and para professional at Franklin School. Mrs. Stinson was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and played in the Bell Choir, and was a member of the Circle 5, of the church. She enjoyed raising flowers, doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and watching her children and grandchildren’s sporting activities.

Survivors include her husband; Charles D. Joan was born January 31, 1930 in Atchison, the daughter of the late Clarence and Cecil (Clements) Bigelow. She graduated from Atchison High School in 1947. She worked as a telephone operator from 1947-1948 and then attended nursing school at KU Medical Center. Joan was a Registered Nurse at the Atchison Hospital from 1951-1970 at which time, she also worked for the Bethany Hospital, Kansas City, and the Osawatomie Psychiatric Hospital. In 1972, Joan worked for the St. Luke’s Hospital in the Hemodialysis Unit. Joan was a member of the Atchison Hospital Auxiliary and Bellevue Country Club. She volunteered for Atchison’s Habitat for Humanity, enjoyed going to auctions, was an avid golfer and especially cherished time spent with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

In 1950 Joan married Jack Roth. They had two children together John (Eileen) Roth, Atchison, KS and Teri Field, England. She later married Speed Stanton in 1975 and they were divorced in 1995.

In addition to her children, she is survived by sisters, Sally Hayes, Atchison and Sandra Brown, Murphy, N.C.; grandchildren, Joe and Tiffany Gazarek, Savannah, MO and their daughter, Chloe; Megan Gazarek, Amazonia, MO and her children, Kalen, Isabella and Willow Russell; Katie Field, Savannah, MO; Jackie Carlton and her children, Chance, Crimson and Tessa; Calvin Roth and his daughter, Kassi; Kristie Roth and her son, Christopher, good friends, Mark and Janet Jackson, Weston, MO; Jean McKinney, who painted the portrait of Joan and many other close friends.

She was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, Jocelyn Gazarek.

Joan was devoted in love, to her family and church.

Jim was born December 29, 1921 in Atchison, the son of the late Henry B. and Ruby M. (Tull) Hundley. He was a member of the U.S. Army Infantry serving during World War II. Jim had worked at Midwest Solvents for 31 years retiring has a supervisor. He was a life member of the VFW and a member of the American Legion. Jim enjoyed going to the casino, playing cards, farming, conservation, traveling and especially spending time with all of his grandchildren.

Jim married Virginia Dunn-Ball on April 17, 1946 in Troy, KS. She preceded him in death on November 18, 1993. Survivors include sons, Leonard (Barb) Hundley, Lancaster, KS, Phillip (Jody) Hundley, Cummings, KS; a daughter, Sharon (Dan) Schuetz, Cummings, KS; brothers, Charles Hundley, Highland, CA, and Harold Hundley, Kirbyville, MO; sisters, Dorothy Wilburn, Delia ‘Pete’ Burge and Bettie Jean Miner, all of Atchison; 11 grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.

Stephen had worked as a gas station attendant in Kansas City, MO, as a welder and electrician for Trail Mobile and most recently in the custodial maintenance department in the VA Hospital, Topeka, KS. He enjoyed watching television and various types of movies.

Survivors include a sister; Donnie Langston, OK, and several nieces and nephews, including Steve Kley who had been his caretaker for the past few years.

Marvin O. Mikkelson, 72, went to be with the Lord on January 1, 2010. He was surrounded by his loving family at Heartland Regional Medical Center as he lost his battle with cancer. He was born on March 1, 1937 in Ortley, South Dakota. Marvin was the son of Ole and Anna (Pederson) Mikkelson.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, January 9, 2010 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, Atchison. He went to work for AnaCon Foods as the Director of Operations until his retirement. He was an active member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. He was an avid reader. He enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren; golfing, bowling, hunting, fishing, bird-watching and all sports.

On June 7, 1958 he married Jeanette Dallager in Minneapolis, MN. She survives of the home. Additional survivors include two sons: Michael (Kathy) Mikkelson, Stilwell, KS, Mark (Debra) Mikkelson, Atchison, KS, one daughter, Kimberly (Wendall) Smith, Atchison, KS, a brother; David Mikkelson, Whitewood, SD, three sisters; Elvina Birney, Waubay, SD, Irene Bloom, Webster, SD and Ardys Becking, Webster, SD, and seven grandchildren. Red had worked as a Security Guard and drove the Athletics bus at Benedictine college until his retirement. He had also worked at Wal-Mart, as a bus driver for USD #409, for the city of Atchison and at the Youth Center. Red was an avid sports fan and was a Sprint race car driver earlier in life. He especially enjoyed time spent with his grandchildren.

Red married Bonnie Reese on October 29, 1964 in Atchison, she survives of the home. Additional survivors include sons; Mike and Danny Richardson, both of Atchison and Jeff Russell, St. Joseph, MO, a daughter; Patty and Shane Brewer, St. Joseph, MO, brother; Max Richardson, Crawfordsville, IN, sisters; Patty Stemick and Janet Peters, both of McAllen, TX, 9 grandchildren, 3 step-grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

JL Bolinger, 81, of Nortonville, KS, passed away Thursday, December 24, 2009 at the Village Villa Nursing Home of Nortonville.

JL was born on May 7, 1928 in Huntsville, Arkansas, the first born of thirteen children to James and Alice (Johnson) Bolinger. JL went to school in Huntsville, finishing 9 grades before leaving to help on the family farm. He served in the United States Army from 1952 to 1954. JL and Lorraine Jones were married in Winchester, KS on October 1, 1955. Together they farmed in the Nortonville area.

JL loved other people and it was often said that he knew no stranger. JL was known as the “Mule Man” to many because his mule team and wagon, which he made, would attend parades and other public events. He also enjoyed welding.

Survivors include his wife, Lorraine of the home; son, Wayne of Lansing, KS; daughter, Annette Barnes of Eudora, KS; one brother, Charles of Valley, MO; six sisters, Maxine Beal and Lorene Bolinger of Wichita, KS, Lavera MacAfee and Vina Kidd of Huntsville, AR, Lucille Collins of Springdale, AR, and Polly Majors of Beaumont, TX; and four grandchildren.

JL is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Art and Joe; three sisters, Tiny Lawson, Norma Walden and Mary Tuttle.

Judith J. Taylor, 70, of Atchison, KS died Wednesday, December 23, 2009 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Judy was born on September 17, 1939 in Atchison, KS the daughter of the late Max and Zilpha (Cummings) Ball. She graduated from Atchison High School and then received her teaching degree from Emporia State Teachers College. Judy was a member of the Pi Chapter of Sigma, Sigma, Sigma Sorority. She taught school for several years and then stayed home to raise her family. Judy was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, lifetime member of the Friends of the Library, on the Friends of the Library Board and was a member of the Bridge Club, playing in the Roundelay Bridge Tournaments. She enjoyed reading, puzzles, playing bridge and especially her grandchildren.

Judy was married to James L. Taylor on June 4, 1961 in Atchison, KS. Mr. Taylor survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son; Chris S. (Kim) Taylor, Atchison, KS, two daughters; Sheridan Anderson, Kansas City, MO and Tish (Jarret) Sick, Shawnee, KS, a brother; Butch Ball, Atchison, KS, and a sister; Kathy Hines, Atchison, KS, and five grandchildren.

Richard 'Rick' M. Brown, 52, passed away December 13, 2009 in Canon City, Colorado.

A memorial service will be at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, December 17, 2009 at the Holt Chapel of the Garden in Canon City, CO. Another memorial service will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, December 21, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home in Atchison, Kansas. He was born in Pearl City, Hawaii on October 1, 1957 to Benjamin and Barbara (Benton) Brown. He was united in marriage to Sandi Stynski on December 28, 1984 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Richard served with the U. S. Marines and U.S. Army. Rick had worked for the Federal Bureau of Prisons in Leavenworth for a number of years before moving to Florence, CO in 1993 to work at the prison there, retiring in 2008. He enjoyed camping, fishing, panning for gold, and setting up firework displays.

Richard is survived by his wife, Sandi of Florence; daughter, Rachel Brown; mother, Barbara; siblings, Dan (Joyce) Brown, Judy (Wes) Lentz, Jane (Dwaine) Klingman, Paul (Sherry) Brown, and Beth (Rob) Stone; father-in-law, Norbert Stynski; sister-in-law, Suzie (Charles) Reilly; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his father; brother, Audie; and mother-in-law, Patricia Stynski.

Marian C. Gilliland, 92, passed away Monday, December 14, 2009 at her home in Atchison.

Marian was born October 29, 1917 in Atchison, KS. Her adoptive parents were Andrew L. and Philippine Willimena (Dilgert) Kurtz. Marian graduated from Atchison High School in 1936 and had worked part-time at J.C. Penney’s and Sears, both of Atchison. Marian was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother who loved spending time with her family. She was a member of the First Christian Church, a deaconess of the church and belonged to the Christian Women’s Fellowship of the church where she had served as its treasurer. She was also a 25 year member of the Independence Home Extension Unit. Marian was an avid seamstress and enjoyed making many ceramic projects.

Marian and Elmer Berry were united in marriage on April 24, 1937 in Atchison at the First Christian Church. Elmer preceded her in death on March 21, 1975. Marian married Charles ‘Ed’ Gilliland on October 16, 1976 also at the church and he preceded her in death on November 30, 2005. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one step-son, Charles E. Gilliland, II; two brothers; and five sisters.

Survivors include two daughters, Karen (Joe) Noll of Atchison and Jeanette Damkroger of Richardson, TX; one step-daughter, Peggy Gilliland of Horton, KS; one step-son, Stephen (Dorothy) Gilliland of Jacksonville, FL; one brother, Ted Otte of Atchison; five grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; thirteen step-great grandchildren; two step great-great grandchildren.

Larry was born May 16th, 1942 in Atchison KS, the son of Loren and Anna (Hembrough) Jones. Mr. Jones was a self-employed welder and auto mechanic. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and working on cars.

He married Sharon Frasher on July 10, 1962 in Omaha, NE, she survives of the home. Darrell was born on April 3, 1951 in Atchison, KS. the son of Raymond and Waneda (Baker) Huff. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1969. He went to work for the Missouri-Pacific Railroad, then Flemings, as a sales clerk for J.C. Penney, then Feldman’s Clothing Store, Diebolts Clothing Store, and then moved to Leavenworth, KS. where he owned and operated the Huff Shoe Store, for over 13 years. While in Leavenworth he served on the City Council, and help originate the Downtown Association. Mr. Huff loved cars and later worked at Phalen Motors selling cars then as the used car sales manager for Vic’s Chevrolet, St. Joseph, Mo. Mr. Huff was a member of the (BPOE) Elks Lodge, Leavenworth, and the Masonic Lodge, Atchison.

Survivors include his mother; Waneda Huff, of Atchison, KS., a brother; Don (Martha) Huff, Atchison, KS., a niece; Brandy Wilson, Mooresville, IN., three great grandnephews, and one great grandniece.

CATHERINE E. NOLL , Catherine E. “Katie” Noll, 92, formerly of Hiawatha, KS. died Thursday, December 10th, 2009 at St. Mary’s Manor, Blue Springs, MO.

Catherine E. Wigand was born on April 22, 1917 in Nortonville, KS. the daughter of Martin and Catherine (Schrick) Wigand. She moved to Effingham in 1928 and graduated from St. Ann’s grade school in 1931 and from the Atchison County Community High School in 1935. She worked for the Extension Service and Soil Conservation District in Effingham for 5 years. She also worked for the Soil Conservation Service (Watershed Program) at Atchison, Cedar Vale and Frankfort until she retired in November 1982 after 27 years with the Service. She received several Outstanding Awards and Letters of Commendation during her years as a Government employee. Mrs. Noll was a member of St. Ann’s Church and the Altar Society at Effingham and Hiawatha, KS., and an auxiliary member of the Legion of Mary. Catherine was a member of the Kansas Chapter of Association of Retired SCS Employees, and a member of (NARFE) National Association of Federal Employees Chapter #2164. She especially enjoyed quilting and needle work in addition to gardening and flowers.

She was married to Oscar Noll on April 12, 1939 at St. Ann’s Church in Effingham. Mr. Noll preceded her in death on March 27, 1990. Survivors include two daughters; Donna Lee (John) Schletzbaum, Indianola, IA, and Sharon (Robert) Antes, Grain Valley, MO. a son; Jerry Noll, Wichita, KS., two sisters; Viola Wigand, Atchison, Ks. and Edith Hund, Paxico, KS., seven grandchildren, and ten great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. Her parents, husband Oscar and three sisters, Emma Wohletz , Ruth Adcock and Frances Koenig , and one great granddaughter, Kylie Antes preceded her in death.

Marcella was a homemaker; substitute Post Master at the Potter Post Office and a Teacher’s Aide at the Potter Grade School. She enjoyed reading, solving puzzles, attending sporting events for her grandchildren and had also played on a women’s basketball league in Potter earlier in life. Marcella married Herman Dibbern on April 12, 1947 in Leavenworth, KS. He preceded her in death on November 11, 2005. She was also preceded in death by a son, William H. in January of 1966 and a daughter, Bonita J. Watkins in August of 1995.

LaMarne (Bryan) Bowen McNett, 89, of Atchison went to be with God on Wednesday, December 2, 2009.

LaMarne was born February 14, 1920 the daughter of Lawson and Sarah (O’Dell) Bryan. She was a housewife and homemaker. LaMarne was a member of the Salvation Army and Home League. She enjoyed embroidery, reading and volunteer work, but especially enjoyed her family, grandkids and friends.

LaMarne married Alvin Bowen in 1938; he preceded her in death in August 1966. She married Robert McNett in 1969; he also preceded her in death in March 1985. Survivors include five sons; Kenneth (Jackie) Bowen, Harold “Buzzy” Bowen, Frank (Sue) Bowen, Lyle (Lydia) Bowen, all of Atchison, and Michael (Janet) Bowen, Horton, KS; eight daughters; Frances (Fred) McFeeters, Van Buren, AR, Mary (Jim) Kopp, Alton, IL, Edith Billings, Bremington, WA, Lucy Warner, Ladys Island, SC, Rosa (Steve) Stryker, Palmetto, FL, Carolyn (Bud) Muncie, Valerie Thompson, and Pamela Weishaar all of Atchison. Rachael was born March 11, 1923 in Nortonville, KS, the daughter of the late William J. and Katherine E. (Hoffman) Noll. She attended St. Joseph’s Catholic School and graduated from Nortonville High School in 1940. Rachael was a housewife, member of St. Joseph’s Altar Society, American Legion Auxiliary and the Lane Unit. She enjoyed playing cards, embroidery, crocheting, gardening and volunteering for 4-H. Rachael especially enjoyed making projects for her family and adored her grandchildren. Farming related activities included Atchison County Livestock Board Spouses and Farm Bureau.

Rachael married Carl Wagner on April 20, 1944. He preceded her in death on May 2, 1979. She later married Thomas Rauth in 1983 and he preceded her in death in 1994. Survivors include two sons; Steve and Jodie Wagner, Little Rock, AR, Greg and Sherry Wagner, Nortonville, three daughters; Jane and Jim Guest, Waco, TX, Roberta (Byrdy) Wagner and John Hall, LaCoste, TX, Stacey and Terry Wolfe, Atchison, KS. David Laurie , 91, former Mayor of Atchison, KS, died Sunday, November 29,2009 at the Alders Gate Village, Topeka, KS.

David was born on June 13, 1918 in Atchison, Kansas the son of John and Hazel (Carrico) Laurie, Sr. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1936 and attended Kansas State University for one year. Mr. Laurie worked as a molder, then casting foreman for the former LFM and Rockwell International of Atchison for over 41 years before retiring in 1980. He served eight years as a City Commissioner for the City of Atchison, six of those years as Mayor of the City. Mr. Laurie was a charter member of the MO-KAN Regional Council, serving as Chairman from 1980 through 2006 and as a member until 2008. He was a Board member of the Kansas League of Municipalities, had received the Rockwell International’s Good Citizenship Award in 1981, and served on the Board of National Associations of Regional Councils, and the National League of Municipalities Public Safety Commission. In addition, he helped organize the local Midget Football program and was active in the American Legion Baseball program and YMCA Basketball League. He served on the Atchison City Recreation Commission, Kansas Youth Center of Atchison Advisory Board and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. He was a member of the First Christian Church, an Elder Emeritus, served on the Scholarship Committee as Chairman for many years, the Active Masonic Lodge # 158, the Atchison YMCA, was an avid golfer, a member of several coffee clubs, and the Tuesday Lunch Canada Fishing Club.

Mr. Laurie was married to Geraldine Merritt on September 6, 1939 at the First Christian Church, Atchison, KS. Mrs. Laurie survives him of the home in Topeka, KS. Additional survivors include three sons; John Laurie, Overland Park, KS, David (Claudette) Laurie, Manhattan, KS, and Phil (Kay) Laurie, Topeka, KS, two sisters; Letha Colton, Tulsa, OK, and Betty Berger, Greensboro, NC, nine grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren. His parents, two brothers; James Laurie and John Laurie, Jr., and four sisters; Annie Laurie Johnson, Hazel Oaks, Barbara Conner, and Sandra Goodwin all preceded him in death.

Leonard Barker ,91, Atchison, passed away Sunday, November 29, 2009 at the Atchison Senior Village.

Leonard was born January 17, 1918 in Atchison, the son of the late Leonard and Olive (Trainer) Barker, Sr. He attended school in Atchison and served in the US Army. He was a truck driver for the 414th Engineering Battalion serving in the Philippines. Junior worked 32 years at Pillsbury as a wheat and elevator cleaner. He was a life member of the VFW Post 1175 and enjoyed attending auctions and reading. Leonard liked to fly model airplanes, enjoyed gardening and tinkering with old cars and especially liked listening to music and spending time with his grandkids.

Leonard married Willetta Gilliland on August 18, 1940 in Atchison. She preceded him in death on April 20, 2005. Survivors include a son; Leonard W. and Annette Barker, Oak Grove, MO, daughter; Willetta Louise and Claude Zacharias, Sr., Atchison, 6 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Junior was also preceded in death by brothers; James, LeRoy, and Raymond Barker and sisters; Mary Flattre, Violet Franzel, and Della Franzel.

Miss Kempin was a member of the Christ Lutheran Church, Topeka, KS, she enjoyed the Theatre, Stage plays, and especially loved her dog and animals.

Lila M. Woods was born May 13, 1927 the daughter of Zenus and Ida (Hattan) Rupert. She graduated from Atchison High School in 1945. She worked as a seamstress for the Horton Garment Company for 16 years. She enjoyed quilting, gardening and painting. Lila was president of the Willing Wonders Club, wrote many newspaper articles, was a member of the ILGWU 538 Club, and was the family historian.

Lila married John “Jack” Woods in December 1964; he preceded her in death August 12, 2002. Ruth M. Willming ,90, of Atchison, KS, died Saturday, November 28, 2009 at the Atchison Medicalodge.

Ruth M.Tipling was born on Sep. 20, 1919 in Muscotah, KS. She worked as a clerk for the Saunders Manufacturing Drug Store, Valley Falls. She was a former member of the Christian Church, Valley Falls, KS. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, canning, sewing, plants and flowers, camping and talking with family. Ruth was a loving wife and mother. She was a wonderful grandmother who enjoyed helping family. She is at peace now that the Lord has re-united her with her soul-mate James E. Willming , who preceded her in death on May 24, 2002.

Survivors include two sons; Donald (Brenda) Willming, Rushville, MO and Edward (Gayle) Willming, Overland Park, KS, a brother; Earl Tipling, CA, a sister; Florence Nevins, Valley Falls, KS, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Russell E. Kiehl ,85 years of age, of Atchison, KS., died unexpectedly Sat. November 28, 2009 at the Atchison Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Tuesday, Dec. 1st, 2009 at the St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Nortonville, KS, with Pastor Michael VanVelzer officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Russell was born on March 4, 1924 in Atchison, KS, the son of Russell L. and Harriett (Kopelk) Kiehl. Mr. Kiehl graduated from Atchison High School in 1942. Following graduation from high school he moved to Benicia, CA, and worked at Benicia Arsenal. He was a retired Chief Master Sgt of the U.S. Airforce Reserves serving 33 years, and during World War II with the 506th Fighter Squadron. He served on Iwo Jima, and was honored with two Battle Stars for air combat and the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Medal. Mr. Kiehl was called to active duty during the Berlin Crisis in 1961-1962 and was stationed at Andrews Air Force Base outside of Washington, D.C. When he returned home Mr. Kiehl worked at the Kiehl Brothers Service Station, Atchison, then the Martin Oil Company, CHC Tire Supply, and then Page Airways until he retired in 1986. He continued to work at the Veterans Administration Medical Center and Fort Leavenworth, in Leavenworth KS for many years following his retirement. He was a member of the St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church, Nortonville, KS, the V.F.W. Post # 1175, and the American Legion Post # 6, both of Atchison, KS, a member of the Air Force Sergeants’ Association, was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans and was an avid bowler.

Russell was married to Della Walker on February 23, 1945 in Jasper; AL. Mrs. Kiehl preceded him in death on November 30, 2004. His parents, a son; Russell E. Kiehl, Jr., two brothers; Harry E. Kiehl, and Carl E. Kiehl, also preceded him in death. Survivors include a daughter and Son-in-law; Jeannine A. and Stephen R. Wyatt, Topeka, KS, a brother; John H. Kiehl, Sun Lake, AZ., two grandchildren; J. Kyle Watt, Topeka, KS, and Katherine Wyatt Turner, Lawrence, KS, and one great grandson; David Wyatt Turner, Lawrence, KS., a nehew and niece; Harry and Delores Kiehl, Atchison, KS, a niece; Pamela King, Phoenix, AZ, nephews; John Kiehl, Nixa, MO, and Kevin Kiehl, Westminster, CO,great nieces and great nephews, and numerous cousins.

Norman Hayes, 72, Atchison, passed away, Wednesday, November 25, 2009 at the Atchison Senior Village.

Norman was born November 2, 1937 in Atchison, KS the son of the late Fred and Bernice (Bigenwalt) Hayes. Norman worked on a shrimp boat in the Gulf of Mexico, in the maintenance department at Boston College and as a handyman around town. He enjoyed to go fishing, working on vehicles and Uncle Normy loved to make people laugh.

Norman married Nancy Dalbey and she preceded him in death. Later he married June Simpson, who also preceded him in death. He is survived by his children, Danny, Rodney, Michael and Randy Hayes, Susan Hayes, Jamie Wainright and Patty Hector, Sisters; Judy Prohaska, Atchison, KS and Patricia Negonsott, Effingham, KS, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by a brother; Walter Hayes, and two sisters; Barbara Gilliland and Jeanette Hayes.

Leo was born April 1, 1947, in Atchison, KS the son of the late Harold Charles and Evelyn S. (Novinski) Boos. He graduated from Maur Hill in 1965 and moved to Iowa where he worked as a butcher for Oscar Mayer. Leo married Yvonne Wood and they later divorced. He was a member of Sacred Heart and the Knights of Columbus.

Survivors include two sons; John Boos, Hiawatha, KS, and James Boos, Kansas City, KS, four brothers; John (Dee), Vancouver, WA, Steve (Cheryl) Excelsior Springs, MO, George (Jane) and Harold (Olivia) both of Atchison, three sisters; Mary (Ray) Kopaska, Olathe, KS, Cecilia (Frank) Bisang, Overland Park, KS, and Kathy Kisenmacher, Valley, WA, and one grandson; Cody Boos, Reno, NV.

Leo was also preceded in death by two brothers; Charles and Al Boos and one sister; Theresa Baker.

Frances Mary Loob-Herricks, formerly of Everest, KS passed away November 19, 2009 at the age of 92. She was a resident of the Maple Heights Nursing Home, Hiawatha, KS. Frances was born in Beattie, KS on September 29, 1917 to Patrick Loob and Elizabeth Ludchen-Loob. She attended Mt. Saint Scholastica College in Atchison, KS and was an illustrator for Walt Disney on Snow White and other productions. She married Robert Nicholas Herricks on February 16, 1942 in Los Angeles, CA. They lived in Europe and many places across the United States during his 33-year career in the Army and civil service. They retired to Everest, KS in 1975. Frances was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and Altar Society, Purcell, KS.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert and sisters, Aurilia Loob, Ethylinda Bollinger, and Katherine Schmidt.

Frances is survived by her brother Raymond Loob, four children, Clifton Robert Herricks, Edwin Eugene Herricks, James Michael Herricks, and Elizabeth Allyn Landau, six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Ruth Nevitt Schmitt, 78, of Rushville, MO, passed away unexpectedly Wednesday, November 18, 2009 at the Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, MO.

Memorial services will be 7:00 pm, Tuesday, November 24, with visitation to follow until 9:00 pm at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home in Atchison, with the Rev. Bruce Haltom, officiating. Family and friends are also welcome to attend a visitation Monday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the funeral home. Private family inurnment will take place at a later date. Ruth was born on November 2, 1931, in Clarksdale, MO, the daughter of David and Velma (Welsh) Nevitt. She graduated from high school in Allerton, IA. She received her Theological degree from Central Baptist Theological College in Kansas City, KS and was the first woman American Baptist Minister in the State of Kansas. Ruth, along with her husband Lawrence, ministered to congregations in Whiting, Onaga, and Laclede, KS. Ruth had also taught Bible Study classes at the University of Kansas and had been a member of a Presidential Task Force under President Ronald Reagan.

Ruth was very passionate about sharing the Gospel with others. Her ministry and family were most important in her life. She enjoyed crocheting, tatting, crossword puzzles, cooking, making deserts, playing the piano, reading, drawing, painting and being with her grandchildren.

Ruth and Lawrence David Schmitt were married on April 15, 1951 in Topeka, KS. He survives of the home in Rushville. Other survivors include three sons, David (Darlene) Schmitt of Topeka, KS, Douglas (Candy) Schmitt of Horton, KS, Jack (Betti) Schmitt of St. Joseph, MO; one daughter, Heidi Nolte of Atchison; one sister, Vivian Karns of Nixa, MO; 20 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and their beloved dog, Rascal.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; one brother; and one granddaughter, Angel Schmitt.

Betty Lou was born March 29, 1925 the daughter of the late James B. and Alice M. (Foley) Gronniger, Sr. She graduated from Bendena High School and St. Joseph Business College. Betty Lou was a member of the St. Louis Church, Good Intent, and St. Louis Altar Society. She devoted her life to helping her husband and best friend on their farm and raising their children. She lived all of her married life on the same farm in the Good Intent Community.

Betty Lou married Lawrence H. Scherer on March 5, 1946 at St. Benedict’s Church, Kansas City, KS. He preceded her in death on October 6, 1998. Survivors include three sons; Henry & Bonnie, Jerome and Carl Scherer, all of Atchison, KS, two daughters; Rita and Chris Jones, and Marilyn Scherer, both of Atchison, a son-in-law, Bill Spilman, Effingham, KS, 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by a daughter; Dorothy Spilman, February 20, 1999, daughter-in-law; Grace Taylor Scherer, December 1, 1986 and brothers James, Odilo and John Gronniger.

Mr. Noll was born on Sept. 9, 1929 in rural Winchester, KS., the son of A.T. and Pearl (Servaes) Noll. He served in the U.S. Army in Germany during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Noll was a farmer for most of his life in the Easton/Winchester community. He was a member of the Corpus Christi Church, the Leavenworth Area Chamber of Commerce, the Elks Lodge, Leavenworth, KS., and enjoyed fishing, hunting, finding mushrooms, traveling and checking on crop progress in the fields.

He was married to Dorothy Sass on Feb. 14, 1964 in Jarbalo, KS.. Mrs. Noll survives of the home in Winchester. Additional survivors include two sons; Tom Noll, Winchester, KS., John Noll, Colorado Springs, CO., a daughter, Cindy Messer, Leavenworth, KS., five sisters; Nina Kreutzer, Basehor, KS., Doris Ruhlman, Oskaloosa, KS., Juanita Jones, Easton, KS., Ruth Hoffman, Emporia, KS., and Judy Sigman, Jefferson City, MO., six grandchildren, and four great grandchildren.

Gerald E. Ford , 83 years of age, of Atchison, KS. died Wednesday, November 11, 2009 at the Atchison Medicalodge.

Gerald was born on May 9, 1926 in Atchison, KS. the son of Lester and Irene(Barnett) Ford. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1943. Mr. Ford was a World War II US Army veteran serving in the 30th Infantry, US Army. He was wounded in Germany and spent several months recovering in the hospital in Holland, and was a recipient of a Purple Heart. Mr. Ford was a master brick and concrete craftsman. He owned and operated Ford, Inc., in Atchison for many years until he retired in the late 1990’s. He was a Master Mason and member of the Martha Washington Chapter of the Masonic Lodge, Atchison, the Knights Templer, and 60 year member of the American Legion Post # 6, and V.F.W. Post # 1175. Gerald helped each summer with the markers for new inductees and installation of all the sidewalks in the Forrest of Friendship. He enjoyed traveling and investing in Casino’s.

He was married to Evelyn Nadine “Dee” Kurtz on Jan. 31, 1945 in Troy, KS. Mrs. Ford survives at Medicalodge of Atchison. Additional survivors include a daughter-n-law, Robyn Ford-Handke, Atchison, KS,a brother-in-law, Dennis Kurtz, Topeka, KS and several nieces and nephews. His parents, a son, Terry Lee Ford(3-14-1984), and a infant daughter, Vicki Kay Ford,(1948) two brothers; Norman and Lester Junior Ford, all preceded him in death.
