OBITUARIES


J. Alfred Keirns, 84, Nortonville, KS, passed away, Thursday, July 2, 2009, at the F.W. Huston Medical Center in Winchester, KS.

Funeral Services will be held 10:00 am, Monday, July 6, at the O’Trimble Funeral Home in Nortonville with Rev. Beverly Bowyer, officiating. Burial will follow in the Nortonville Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday from 6:00 to 8:30 pm at the funeral home. Memorial contributions in memory of Alfred are suggested to the F.W. Huston Medical Center, Winchester. Alfred was born February 18, 1925 in Cummings, KS, the son of Clarence ‘Jack’ and Hazel (Robinson) Keirns. He attended grade school at Pardee, KS and graduated from ACCHS in Effingham in 1943. Alfred’s worked all his life on the farm. He had been a dairyman for over 43 years in the Nortonville area when he retired in 1989. Alfred loved playing and coaching baseball and formed the first Pee Wee Baseball League in Nortonville and coached its teams for many years. Alfred also played baseball for many area town teams and was proud to have caught Satchel Paige. Alfred especially enjoyed being around his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a member of the Atchison County CO-OP Board of Directors and the SAL of Nortonville.

Alfred and Ethel McCoy were married on June 2, 1946 in Nortonville, KS. Ethel survives of the home. Additional survivors include two sons, Bill Keirns and his wife, Laura, Joe Keirns and his wife, Judy, both of Nortonville; one daughter, Luetta Giese and her husband, Charley, of Leavenworth; one brother, Robert Keirns, Nortonville; eight grandchildren, Darrin (Angie) Hobbs, Joetta (Carl) Weishaar, Curtis Keirns, Brad Keirns, Shannon Keirns, Casey (Melody) Keirns, Corey Keirns, and Carrie Keirns; nine great grandchildren, Jessica, Mary and Patrick Hobbs, Kailie, Kelsie and Hunter Fitzgerald, Dakota and Mason Weishaar, Connor Keirns.

Alfred was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Harlan and one sister, Yvonne Brenish.

Robert L. Courter , 28, of Nortonville, KS passed away Monday, June 29, 2009 at Perry Lake saving the life of his fiancée’s son; Jacob Peet.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM, Friday, July 3, 2009 at the Nortonville Christian Church, Nortonville, KS, with Seth Montgomery officiating. Burial will follow in the Spring Grove Cemetery, Boyle, KS. The family will receive friends from 6-8:30 PM, Thursday, July 2, 2009 at the O’Trimble Funeral Home, Nortonville, KS. Robert was born June 19, 1981 in Leavenworth, KS the son of Paul and Chris (Fry) Courter, Jr. He graduated from Jefferson County North High School in 1999 and went to Highland Community College for one year on a football scholarship. Robert later moved to Ft. Worth, TX and worked as an airplane mechanic. He had most recently been helping his dad build fence with their business, Farm and Ranch Fencing. He liked being a mechanic, fishing, and mushroom hunting. Robert especially enjoyed spending time with Jaden and Jacob, going to Jaden’s baseball games and being with his family.

Survivors include his parents, of Nortonville, a daughter; Jaden Courter, Oskaloosa, a brother; Paul and his wife, Mauri, Courter, III, Salina, KS, two sisters; Amber Pantle and Allie Courter, both of Nortonville, fiancée, Courtney Moore and her son Jacob, Atchison, KS and nieces and nephews; Kieran and Lauren Courter and Jordan and Emily Pantle.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; Paul and Alean Courter and Robert and Margaret Fry.

John B. Brentano , 74 years of age of Lancaster, KS, died Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at St. Luke's Hospital, Kansas City, MO.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:00 AM on Saturday, June 27th, 2009 at Sacred Heart Church, with Fr. Benjamin Tremmel, OSB as Celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Benedict’s Cemetery, Bendena, KS. John was born on February 5, 1935 in Atchison, KS the son of Joseph and Helen (Hayes) Brentano. He graduated from Maur-Hill in 1953. He served in the United States Air Force . Mr. Brentano worked as a lab technician for the former Pillsbury’s and then Con Agra, Atchison, before retiring in 1997. He was a member of the St. Ann’s Church, Effingham, KS, the Knights of Columbus Council 723, the VFW Post #1175 and the American Legion Post #6, Atchison. He also served on the Lancaster City Council and was a member of the Lancaster Coffee Club.

He was married to Judith Kay Pauly on November 11, 1967 at St. Mary’s Church, Purcell, KS. Mrs. Brentano preceded him in death on November 16, 2004. His parents, and one sister, Bernice Barnett, also preceded him in death. Survivors include a son Jeffrey D. Brentano, Atchison, KS, a daughter, Traci Brentano, Newton , KS, a brother Joseph Brentano, Effingham, KS, and two sisters; Helen Wack, Council Bluffs, IA, and Sr. Alice Brentano, Atchison, KS, and brother-in-law and his wife Michael (Debbie) Pauly, Topeka, KS.

Glenn Michael Daniel , 65, passed away on March 2, 2009 at his home in Colorado Springs, CO.

Mike was born on Nov. 27, 1943, in Atchison, to the late Glenn Walker and Esther Geneva (Fowler) Daniel. Mike was raised in the Atchison area by his late maternal grandparents Quincy and Ethel Fowler. He was a graduate of Atchison High School in 1963. He later served on the Atchison Police Department in the late 1960s, worked for Midwest Solvents, and Atchison Hospital.

Mike is survived by his children Michael D. Daniel (Cheryl), Meriden, Michelle Daniel-Kell, Lexington, Ky., Brian C. Daniel, Texas, wife Juana Daniel; a step-daughter Gensis Escobar, Wisconsin; brother Doug (Sharon) Daniel, Colorado Springs, Colo., sister, Virginia M. (Richard) Garrett, Great Bend; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Raymond C. "Ray" Gardner , 86 years of age, of Atchison, Kansas died Friday, June 19, 2009 at the Hickory Pointe Care Center, Oskaloosa, KS.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:30 AM Tuesday, June 23, 2009 at St. Benedicts Church with Rev. Daniel Gardner as Celebrant. Burial will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Atchison, KS. A parish and Knights of Columbus rosary will be recited at 6:30 pm on Monday, June 22, 2009, visitation with the family to follow until 8:30 pm at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Ray was born on April 20, 1923 in Clifton, KS the son of Guy and Lena (Bouley) Gardner. He attended rural Clifton grade schools and graduated from Clifton Rural High School before entering the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II as a hospital Apprentice Dental Technician and Pharmacist Mate.

He was united in marriage to Dorothy Coash at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Clifton, KS, on Dec. 31st, 1946. Ray and Dorothy celebrated over 62 years of married life. They resided in Beatrice, NE for three years working at Dempster Mill Manufacturing Company before Ray entered Kansas State University in Manhattan, KS. and later the Kansas City College of Mortuary Science, Kansas City, KS. He became a licensed funeral director and embalmer in both Kansas and Missouri. They moved to Atchison where Ray was associated with the Harouff-Buis Funeral Home. They moved to Belleville, KS where he was associated with the Tibbetts Brothers Funeral Home and Furniture Store. In 1971 he returned to Atchison and entered into a partnership owning and operating the Stanton Mortuary in Atchison, KS, retiring from the Becker Dyer Stanton Funeral Home in 2004. He received state honors for over Fifty years of service in the funeral profession. During this time he served on the Kansas Funeral Directors Association Board of Directors where he held all the offices of District 1.

Ray was a member of St. Joseph Church and later Sacred Heart Church where he served as Lector, usher, and Eucharistic Minister. He held memberships in the Knights of Columbus for over 60 years serving in numerous offices of the 3rd and 4th degrees which included Grand Knight, Faithful Navigator, District Deputy and Comptroller. Ray and his family received the distinguished award as Kansas Knights of Columbus Family of the Year in 1999. Later that year they were selected as the Knights of Columbus International Family of the Year at the Knights of Columbus International Convention in Minneapolis, MN. He has served as a Board of Director of HUD, Red Cross Chairman and held offices in the Kiwanis Club, organizing the Kiwanis Flea Market for several years. He was a faithful blood donor. His volunteer work included the Road to Recovery Program for a number of years. He was a member and Past Commander of the Fleming-Jackson-Seever American Legion Post # 6, Atchison, KS. He was active in the Democratic Party and served as a precinct Committee Chairman for several years. He was a member of the Pineview Country Club, and enjoyed golf, and other club activities. He enjoyed playing card games and Dominos with his family, friends and several organizations. He and his wife’s travels included England, Hawaii and several trips to Mexico.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy, of Atchison, KS, six sons; Dr. Patrick (Lois Jean) Gardner, Kennewick, Washington, CMSgt. Ret. Gregory (Betty Jo) Gardner, Lenexa, KS, Rev. Daniel Gardner, Kansas City, KS, Dennis (Patricia) Gardner, Atchison, KS, Kevin (Terri Ann) Gardner, Lansing, KS, and Rex (Jeanne) Gardner, Lawrence, KS, a daughter; Lisa (Randy) Carney, Irving, TX, a sister; Maxine Branfort, Clifton, KS, thirteen grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Doran Gardner, two sisters; Mary Rowland, and Ada Mae Gardner, two step sisters; Lavonne Ricciardone and Juneita Berry and one granddaughter; Alexa Dawn, infant daughter of Gregory and Betty Jo Gardner.

Helen Mary Johnson , 92, of Atchison, KS passed away Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at her daughter’s home with her by her side.

Graveside services will be at 3:00 PM Monday, June 22, 2009 at the Home City Cemetery just outside Marysville, KS. Mrs. Johnson will lie in state beginning at 11:00 AM, at the Kinsley Mortuary, 1006 Broadway Marysville, KS 66508 prior to the graveside. Helen was born July 1, 1916 in Walnut Township, Marshall County, KS the daughter of James Laurence and Hanna (Hanson) Cook. She was a farm wife who belonged to the Social Hour Club, The Shepherd’s Center, Searcher’s Bible Class and the YMCA Book Club. Helen married Lee Roy Johnson on December 18, 1935. Together they had one daughter; Dianna Kruger who survives in Atchison along with her son; Jordan P.F.L. Kruger.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, husband, brother; John Peter Cook, sister; Margaret Schneider, son-in-law; Caddy Kruger and a nephew; John Novotny.

Ruth May Olson , 86, of Effingham, KS passed away Thursday, June 18, 2009 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Ruth was born March 12, 1923 in Pana, IL the daughter of Samuel and Anna Louise (Largent) Ditzler. She graduated from Pana High School and then attended college in Pana as well. Ruth worked as a secretary for an orphanage in Pana and then for Rockwell International and Atchison Leather Products. She enjoyed sewing, crocheting, making quilts, fishing and gardening. Ruth had played the organ at the Everest Christian Church for many years. She loved spending time with her family and her two dogs; Rodney and Tinkerbelle. Ruth married Arthur Olson on January 17, 1948 in Shelbyville, IL. She was married to the love of her life for 52 years when he passed away February 10, 2002.

Survivors include three sons; Harold & Terri Olson, David Olson, and Henry Olson, all of Atchison, two daughters; Selma Key, Effingham,KS, and Kathy & Jeff Jackson, Effingham, KS, a brother; Bruce Ditzler, Mesa, AZ, 9 grandchildren; Carrie Allen, Jennifer Olson, Tamara Olson, Melissa Downing, Christopher Olson, James Olson, Nicholas Olson, Eric Olson, and Elena Olson and 12 great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Olson was preceded in death by her parents, a son; John Olson and a brother; Leonard Ditzler.

Rose M. Pierce, 80, of Atchison, KS, passed away Thursday, June 18, 2009 at the Atchison Hospital.

Rose was born on October 25, 1928 in Atchison, the daughter of Otto and Alice (Bliss) Deyhle. She graduated from Atchison High School in 1946. Rose worked as a clerk for the A & P Store for five years and then worked for 23 years as a clerk for Domann Drug Store, both of Atchison. She retired in 1990. Following her retirement she continued to work part-time for Mom’s & Kid’s, Hetz Card Shop, and the ACES Lunch room. Rose was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Atchison, and had been a foster grandparent at Headstart in Atchison for two years. She enjoyed woodcrafts, gardening, canning, crocheting, reading, and working crossword puzzles.

Rose and Ervin L. Pierce were married on August 20, 1946 at Troy, KS. He preceded her in death on November 12, 2002. She was also preceded in death by an infant son, Ervin Lee Pierce; a daughter, Sandra Kay Foster; and two sisters.

Survivors include her daughter, Patricia Lee Baumann of Atchison; two grandchildren, Misty (Rex) Jones and Michael (Amy) Baumann; and four great-grandchildren.

Bernice C. Malicke, 93, of Leavenworth, KS, passed away, Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at St. John Hospital, Leavenworth, KS.

Bernice was born on June 18, 1915 in the Mooney Creek Community, the daughter of Joseph and Charlotte (Noll) Schrick. Bernice graduated from Winchester High School in 1932. She was a devoted homemaker and mother who enjoyed flower gardening. Bernice was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Leavenworth.

Bernice was married to Casmer Malicke on May 8, 1941 in Mooney Creek and she lived on the family farm there while Casmer served in the military during WWII. In 1946 they moved to Leavenworth where Bernice was an Avon representative. Mr. Malicke preceded her in death on January 20, 1990. Bernice’s parents and four brothers, Eugene, Gerald, Herbert, and Ralph Schrick also preceded her in death.

Survivors include her children, Charlotte Whitfield and her husband, Ken, Shawnee, KS and Joseph Malicke, Mooney Creek; three grandchildren, Dustin, April and Jared Malicke; two great-granchildren, Sheldon and Jack.

Louis M. "Louie" Glennon , 78, of Atchison, KS. died Wednesday, June 10, 2009 at the Atchison Hospital.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, June 15th, 2009 at Sacred Heart Church with Fr. Gerard Senecal, OSB as Celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Patrick’s Cemetery, Atchison. Mr. Glennon was born on March 13, 1931 in Easton, KS the son of Christopher and Mabel (Davenport) Glennon. He owned and operated several car service stations from 1958 to 1971. He then owned and operated Town and Country Tire Supply from 1971 until he retired in 1993 and his son Dan took over the business. Louie continued to help out there when needed. He was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, where he participated in perpetual adoration since its inception. He was a 3rd degree member of the Knights of Columbus, and he and Stella were Road to Recovery Volunteer’s for nine years. Louie received an award for the most miles driven as a volunteer in Atchison County, three consecutive years. Mr. Glennon enjoyed helping people, doing yard work, mowing grass, and washing his vehicles, but his special enjoyment was his family and grandchildren.

Louie was married to Stella E. Wagner on June 9, 1952. They had just celebrated their 57th Wedding Anniversary. Stella survives of the home. Additional survivors include a daughter, Cathy Glennon, Kansas City, MO, four sons; Chris Glennon, Pensacola, FL, Dan (Karen) Glennon, Atchison, KS, Ken (Katie) Glennon, Topeka, KS, and Steve Glennon, Shenandoah, IA, four grandchildren, Carly, Sam, Kevin and Christopher.

Donald Lee Manthe, 82 of Atchison, died Monday June 8, 2009 at the Heartland Regional Medical Hospital.

Donald Manthe was born June 6, 1927 in Easton, KS, the son of August and Daisy Manthe. Donald worked at Rockwell as a foundry worked until he retired in 1982. Some of the things he enjoyed were woodworking and fishing.

He married Shirley Hayden on December 24, 1976 she survives of the home. Additional survivors include a daughter, Barbara (Peter) Repetto, Atchison, KS, a stepson Bud (BJ) Hayden, Middleburg, FL, a brother Joe (Suzanne) Manthe, Leavenworth, KS and a sister, Barbara Lawson, Pedaloma, CA. His parents and two daughters June and Dorothy and five brothers and four sisters all preceded him in death.

Geneva H. Snyder ,101 years of age, formerly of Effingham, KS. died Thursday, May 21st, 2009 at a nursing home in Tallahassee, FL.

Geneva H. Hargrove was born on Feb. 10, 1908 in Effingham, KS. the daughter of Ruben and Idella (Pruitt) Hargrove. She was a school teacher for many years, a member of the Christian Church, Senior Citizens, Retired Teachers Association, and was a 50 year member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was married to J.R. “Bud” Snyder on June 22, 1930 in Effingham, KS.. Mr. Snyder preceded her in death on Jan. 21, 1986. Survivors include a daughter; Shirley and husband Bill Driscoll, Tallahassee, FL., a granddaughter; Kim and husband Jeff George, Jacksonville, FL.

Charles D. Blakley , 87 years of age, of Atchison, KS, died Thursday, May 28, 2009 at the Atchison Medicalodge.

Charles D. Blakley was born on Sept. 14, 1921 in Rushville, MO the son of Joseph A. and Augusta (Harvey) Blakley. Mr. Blakley served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked as a farmer and janitor for the former J.B. Big Boys Restaurant. He was a member of the Church of the Living Love.

He was married to Elizabeth Stains on Sept. 3, 1946 in Atchison, KS. She preceded him in death on June 6, 1993. He was later married to Pauline Hayes in 1995. She also preceded him in death on Nov. 4, 2004. Survivors include a son; Bill Blakley, Atchison, KS, a daughter; Roselee Smith, Atchison, KS, nineteen grandchildren and twenty three great grandchildren and five great great grandchildren. His parents, wives, a daughter, Almeta White, five brothers, and seven sisters also preceded him in death.

Karen J. Petrik, of Atchison, passed away, Thursday, May 28, 2009 at Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, MO.

Karen was born in Stillwater, MN the daughter of John and Frances (Schorr) Cronk. She attended St. Michaels Grade School, Stillwater, MN, and graduated from Cathedral High School, Rapid City, SD. She then attended Hutchinson Junior College, Hutchinson, KS and graduated from Sterling College in 1988 with a Bachelor’s degree in Education. She was a middle school special education teacher for the Wichita Public Schools. Karen was a member of the Chancellor Choir and was a past president of the Young of Heart Club at the First Christian Church and past president of the Kansas State Hospital Auxiliary, Topeka, KS and former member and president of the Atchison Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed volunteering for the Atchison Chamber of Commerce.

Karen married Adolph Petrik on August 11, 1958 in Rapid City, SD. He preceded her in death on January 21, 1984. Jackson (Jack) Harold Carroll, 90, of Atchison, KS, died Friday, May 22, 2009 after a short illness.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, May 28th, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, with Elder Don Harter officiating. Cremation will follow services and burial of the cremated remains will be at a later date in the Mt. Olive Cemetery, Troy, KS. Jack was born on May 2, 1919 in Hagan, VA, to Andrew Jackson and Anna Louise (Carlson) Carroll. Mr. Carroll grew up in Fortescue and St. Joseph, MO. After leaving home he traveled by hopping railcars and working on a potato farm in Idaho. Mr. Carroll was a U.S. Army veteran. He joined the Army in the late 1930’s. Mr. Carroll was stationed at Fort Riley in the Calvary, at a time when they were still patrolling on horseback. When World War II started his unit became the Fourth Armored Division where he was a tank mechanic. He served in Normandy, France, Rhineland, Ardennes, and most of Central Europe, where he engaged in combat, including the Battle of the Bulge. After being discharged in 1945, he returned to St. Joseph. Mr. Carroll was married to Margaret Mae Webster in February 22, 1947 in Atchison, at the then home of Gilbert Hedrick. Together they moved to Atchison in 1950. He worked as a plumber & pipefitter for Local Union #45, St. Joseph, MO for many years, where one of his last jobs before retirement was the original Iatan Power Plant. He retired in 1982. Mr. Carroll was a Deacon in the Community of Christ, Atchison, for over 50 years. He was a member of Local #45 Plumbers & Pipefitters Union, St.Joseph, MO, the American Legion Post #6, and the Lions Club until he lost his eye sight. In his later years he enjoyed going to Project concern almost daily.

Mr. Carroll’s wife, Margaret, preceded him in death on Oct. 5, 2005. His parents, two sisters, Hazel Williams and Jewel Hirter, and a grandson, Michael Carroll also preceded him in death. Survivors include five sons; Ronald Carroll, Omaha, NE, Donald (Samporn) Carroll, Atlanta, GA, James Carroll, Leavenworth, KS, Robert (Helen) Carroll, St. Joseph, MO, and John (Merry) Carroll, Atchison, KS, a brother; James Carroll, Bloomington, MN, twelve grandchildren, and five great grandchildren.

Vincent Snodgrass, 89, of Atchison, KS, passed away, Wednesday, May 13, 2009 at the Atchison Senior Village.

Vincent was born October 17, 1919 in Atchison, KS the son of the late Earl and Bessie (Cowger) Snodgrass. He was a member of the Catholic faith and had worked as a chauffeur for Mount St. Scholastica for 33 years. Vincent enjoyed cars, carpenter work, raising dogs and spending time with his family. He loved boating and had traveled up the Missouri River to the flood gates in North Dakota.

Mr. Snodgrass married Glenadene Sell on August 8, 1938 in Reno, NV. She preceded him in death, September 26, 2007. Survivors include a son; Jerry and Margaret Snodgrass, Lakewood, CO, a daughter; Joan and Dick Lutz, Atchison, a sister; Billee Kneib, Tucson, AZ, 6 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great grandchildren.

Michael Joseph Kane, 48, of Overland Park, KS, formerly of Atchison, KS, passed away Sunday, May 10, 2009 at North Kansas City Hospital.

Michael was born February 13th, 1961 in Atchison, KS, the son of Elvin (Skip) and Frances (Banks) Kane. Michael graduated from Atchison High School in 1979. Michael worked for a couple of years at Rockwell and Goldenstar and recently for Heartland Residential Care. Mr. Kane loved animals and was an avid KU basketball fan and Chiefs fan, he enjoyed going to concerts and listening to Rock’n Roll.

He married Jean (Jackman) Kane on November 23rd, 2007, she survives of the home. Additional survivors include his mother Frances Kane, Atchison, KS, a daughter Lisa Marie Kane, Atchison, two sisters Julie (Eddie) Wilburn, Wamego, KS, Lori (Jerry) Wallace, Richmond, KY and a brother Tony Kane, Atchison, KS. Clarence H. (Pappy) Poos, 93, of Lancaster, KS, passed away, Sunday, May 10, 2009 at the Atchison Medicalodge.

Clarence was born June 21, 1915 in Effingham, KS the son of the late William A. and Mary (Kanning) Poos. He graduated from ACCHS and had worked for the Lancaster Elevator as an operator for 34 years retiring in 1978. Mr. Poos was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, the Independent Order of Odd Fellows Lodge and a volunteer fire fighter. Pappy was a farmer by heart who enjoyed raising dahlias and peonies and sharing them with many friends and neighbors. He also enjoyed collecting and refinishing antique furniture as well as going to auctions and estate sales. He was an avid baseball player, fan and coach. Mr. Poos was a big KU fan who also loved to fish. Pappy was the former Mayor of Lancaster and would be Santa Claus for the children in the community and dress up as a clown for the Atchison County Fair Parade.

Clarence married Mary E. Hollands on August 9, 1939 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Lancaster, KS. She preceded him in death on February 20, 2000. He was also preceded in death by two brothers; Theodore and Walter.

Survivors include a nephew; Bill (Donna) Poos, Atchison, a niece; Judy (Bob) Lawrence, Gardner, KS, one great-niece, one great-nephew, three great-great nieces and one great-great nephew.

Esther A. Steib was born on June 22, 1921 in Streeter, ND, the daughter of Gottheilf and Lydia (Metzger) Steib. Esther graduated from high school in North Dakota. She was married to Llewellyn W. Massee on Dec. 15, 1944 in Minneapolis, MN. Mr. Massee preceded her in death on July 4, 1980. Mrs. Massee and her husband owned and operated “ Massee’s Roller Rink ", a roller skating rink in Farmington, MN. for many years. Mrs. Massee moved to Atchison three and half years ago. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Atchison, a member of the Atchison Hospital Auxiliary, and attended the Atchison Shepherd’s Center. She loved gardening, bird watching and helping others. She especially loved her family and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include two daughters; Marilyn (Jim) Anderson, Westlake Village, CA., and Cynthia (John) Jacobson, Atchison, KS., four grandchildren; Cheryl (Matt) Manzer, Campbell, CA., Matthew Jacobson, New York, NY, Andrea (Drew) Korschot, Mission, KS., and Kaitlynn Jacobson, Atchison, KS. Les was born on May 16, 1918 in Sabetha, KS. the son of Leslie A. and Nina (Mikesll) Smith. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1936. He was a World War II U.S. Army Veteran having served in the D-Day Invasion of Normandy. Mr. Smith worked as a plasterer, and owned and operated the Smith Liquor Store, laundry, and car wash. He was a member and Past Commander of the V.F.W. Post #1175, a member of the American Legion Post # 6, both of Atchison, KS., was a member of the Disabled American Veterans, was a Shriner and a Mason in the Active Masonic Lodge #158, and Scottish Rites, Lawrence, KS. He was an active supporter of the Atchison High School Booster Club and had coached Legion Baseball for many years.

He was married to Marie Wilburn on Aug. 31, 1946 in Atchison, KS. She preceded him in death on March 15, 2000. Survivors include a daughter, Cindy Sloan, Pensacola, FL., five sons; Leslie A. Barbara was a homemaker who enjoyed tending to her flower and vegetable gardens, boating, fishing, gourmet cooking, baking, knitting and sewing and spending time with her grandchildren. She was very active with the Humane Society and loved caring for neglected animals.

Barbara married Charles Scarborough December 17, 1955 in Excelsior Springs, MO, he survives in Atchison. Additional survivors include 3 sons; Bill and Joyce Andes, Atchison, KS, Chuck and Ellen Scarborough, Stamford, CT, Jeff and Alice Scarborough, Conifer, CO and one daughter; Billie Jean (Andes) and Bob Bogardus, Bartlesville, OK, 10 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.

Dorothy was born May 9, 1944 in St. Joseph, MO the daughter of Andrew and Gertrude (Borkoswski) Sanger, Sr. She graduated from Bishop LeBlond High School and then went to the Hannibal School of Nursing. Dorothy was a Licensed Practical Nurse and retired from the Dwight D. Eisenhower VA Medical Center and later worked for Dr. Dina Siebert and then the Jefferson County Hospital and Geriatric Center. She enjoyed spending time with her family and was an avid bird watcher. One of Dorothy’s greatest pleasures was being a nurse.

Dorothy married John Madden on July 8, 1967 in St. Joseph, MO at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, he survives of the home additional survivors include a son; Paul Madden, Topeka, KS, a daughter; Christina Madden, St. George, KS, four brothers; Andy, Robert, Jacob and Jim Sanger, all of St. Joseph, MO, and two sisters; Trudy Lohman, Cummings, KS and Joan Lowe, Colorado Springs, CO and several nieces and nephews.

She was a former member of the First Christian Church, Atchison, KS and enjoyed word puzzles, television, reading mysteries, and handiwork.

She was married to John Stehwien on Oct. 9, 1943. Mr. Stehwien preceded her in death in June 1992. Survivors include a brother, Johnny Justus, St. Joseph, MO, a sister, Beverly Williams, St. Joseph, MO, and nieces and nephews. Cecil O. Gripe , 74 years of age, of Atchison, KS, died Tuesday, April 14, 2009 at the Atchison Senior Village.

Cecil was born on Feb. 27, 1935 in Stark City, MO, the son of Chester O. and Goldie D. (Marion) Gripe. Mr. Gripe had served in the US Army Reserves following high school. He worked as a clerk and mail carrier for the U.S. Postal service, at the Hudson Oil Company Winthrop, Mo. and as an insurance agent for the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company for 22 years. From 1989 to 2005, Mr. Grip started, owned and operated five Subway Restaurants in Kirksville, MO, Mexico, MO, Moberly, MO, in Hiawatha and Atchison, KS. He was a Deacon and member of the Faith Bible Fellowship Church. He sang in the Church Choir, and several quartets. He taught Sunday school and enjoyed music, golfing, reading, and fishing.

He was married to Mary Ann Barber on June 6, 1954 at the Carol Baptist Church, Atchison, KS. Mrs. Gripe survives of the home. Benjamin F. Green, 78, Redding, CA, formerly of Atchison, passed away peacefully April 10, 2009 at the Northern California Rehabilitation Center.

A visitation will be held in Atchison, Kansas on Friday, April 17 from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Interment will be at 12:30 PM in the Leavenworth National Cemetery. Ben, son of Charles and Clara (Walker) Green, was born in St. Joseph, Missouri on December 22, 1930. He was employed at a locomotive foundry in Atchison until going into the United States Army from 1953 to 1954 during the Korean War. He and Helen Jean Myers were married on July 5, 1958 in Atchison and moved to California from Atchison in 1960. He was employed at the University of California, Berkeley from 1961 to 1991 as a machine maintenance supervisor. Ben was an avid fisherman and especially liked to fish on the Sacramento River. He had many friends in the area, taught several classes on fishing and was known for the fishing rods he created and his fishing techniques. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and California Seniors in Retirement.

Surviving are his wife, Helen, Redding, CA; daughter, Katherine Martinez and grandson Zackary, Tracy; son Randall, Atchison. Four brothers, Gene (Sandy), Bill (Jerline), Andy (Sherry), and Jim Green, Atchison.

Deceased family members are his mother and father; two brothers, Charles and Adolph Green.

She formerly attended the Calvary Baptist Church, and enjoyed collecting and wearing head bands. Joy also enjoyed music, television soap operas, word search puzzles and jig saw puzzles, stuffed animals and her favorite color was yellow. She especially loved her nieces and nephews.

Bernice was born on Oct. 31, 1918 in Bern, KS, the daughter of Henry and Emma (Lear) Spellmeier. She graduated from the Fairview High School in 1937. Bernice was married to Nelson L. Welsh on Nov. 12, 1944 in Topeka, KS. Mr. Welsh preceded her in death on Nov. 27, 1984. They formerly owned and operated the Whiskey Rebellion Liquor Store, in Winthrop, MO for twenty-four years, from 1977 to 2001. Mrs. Welsh was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, Mission of Love Quilters and was a member of the Martha Circle of Trinity, and helped with funeral dinners. She was a past President and Treasurer of the Atchison Retarded Citizens Association, and past President, Treasurer for the Lutheran Women Missionary League (LWML). She was a past den mother for Cub Scout Pack 94, Trinity Lutheran and enjoyed her family.

Survivors include a son; Burdel (Cynthia) Welsh, Tonganoxie, KS, a daughter; Annette Welsh, Lawrence, KS., a brother, Emil Spellmeier, Fairview, KS, and two grandsons; Jim (Zila) Welsh, Lawrence, KS and Brian Welsh, Tonganoxie, KS. Marjorie was born February 7, 1918 in Monrovia, KS, the daughter of Clifton and Loie Higley (Bowlin). She graduated from ACCHS in 1936. Marjorie was a housewife and homemaker and was a member of the Farmington Christian Church where she was a Sunday school teacher for 55 years and Superintendent of Sunday school. She was also a member of the Home Demonstration Unit and the Ladies Aide. Mrs. Botkin also served as Superintendent of the flowers during the Effingham fair. She was an avid KU, Chiefs and Royals fan.

She was married to L.W. Botkin on December 3, 1940 in Platte City, MO. He preceded her in death in 1989. Survivors include three sons, Tom (RaeAnn) Botkin, Lakewood, CO, Rick (Janet) Botkin, Lawrence, KS and Terry Botkin, Farmington, KS, a daughter Sandra (Phil) Gordon, Tomball, TX, two brothers Jack (Shirley) Higley, Atchison, KS, Don (Edna) Higley, Lancaster, KS, one sister Bobbie (Ray) Outler, Loveland, CO, and an aunt; Susie Linscott, formerly of Effingham, KS, nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. Nina A. Schrick , 99 years of age, of Nortonville, KS, died Friday, March 20, 2009 at the Village Villa Nursing home, Nortonville, KS.

Nina was born on Jan. 12, 1910 in Easton, KS (a twin to sister, Ina), daughter of Peter and Ann (Nyhart) Beying. She graduated from the Easton High School, in 1929. She worked at St. Mary’s Academy in Leavenworth, KS for four years prior to her marriage. She was married to Raymond W. Schrick on April 30, 1935 in Easton, KS. Nina and Raymond lived in the Nortonville community all their married life where they raised six children, Delores, Jeannie, Harold, Donald, and twins Gerald and Janet. They were married 67 years. Nina was a homemaker who enjoyed her family, reading, quilting, sewing, gardening, canning, growing flowers, raising chickens and selling eggs, playing the piano and traveling. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church, a member of the Altar Society, and the home demonstration unit. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Raymond on June 28, 2002, her sister Margaret “Margie” and husband Leo Noll, formerly of Winchester, KS, her twin, Ina Uhlrich and her husband Joseph, formerly Easton, KS, her brother Eugene “Gene” and wife Cecelia Beying, formerly Easton, KS. Her sister Mildred and husband Fred Bowers, of Cowgill, MO, brother-in-law Albert Schrick and wife Martha, brother-in-law Theodore and Mary Schrick, brother-in-law- Francis Schrick and sister-in-law Ethel Naumann and her husband Henry and son-in-law Tom Taylor.

Thelma L. Jermyn was born on Feb. 22, 1919 in Hansboro, MS., the daughter of George and Mary Ellen (Peppard) Jermyn. She was married to Warren C. Duling on April 5, 1941. She moved to Eskridge, Kansas in the 1940’s with her husband. She worked as a nurse’s aid for the Flint Hills Manor, Eskridge, KS for many years. They move to Atchison, KS in 2004. Mr. Duling preceded her in death in Dec. 2005. Thelma was well known for her artistically crafted paper-mache’ decorations used for school proms, school mascot heads, and beautiful and elaborate parade floats and costumes. She enjoyed reading, and decorating her home for the holidays, particularly making sure her large handmade Nativity was properly displayed in the yard. She was a devoted Catholic, and former member of the St. John’s Vianney Catholic Church, Eskridge, KS.

Survivors include a son; Joseph Duling, Atchison, KS, two daughters; Mary and Charles “Chuck” Van Petten, Atchison, KS and Susan and Stephen Nolte, Ft. William D. Hinton was born on April 23, 1938 in Hiawatha, KS, the son of William James and Florence Irene (VanDelsem) Hinton. He graduated from Atchison High School, had served for couple of years in the National Guard. Mr. Hinton was a engineering supervisor for the Lansing Correctional Facility, retiring after 24 years of service. He was a member of the First Baptist Church, the Sesostris Shriners, Lincoln, NE, and a former member of the Moon Shiners. Mr. Hinton enjoyed woodworking, bird watching, trout fishing and hunting.

He was married to Jacqueline L. (Jackie) Dame on Sept. 19, 1957 in Atchison, KS. Mrs. Hinton preceded him in death on Dec. 1, 2003. His parents, one brother, Marvin Hinton, and a sister, Charlene Faymyer, also preceded him in death. She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, the Atchison YMCA, and was an artist and member of the Midwest Artist Association.

She was married to William Robert Peck in 1933. Mr. Peck preceded her in death in 1960. Her parents, a son, John R. Peck, and three brothers and three sisters also preceded her in death. Earnest W. Justus, 81, of St. Joseph, MO passed away Saturday, February 28, 2009 at his home.

Earnest was born May 29, 1927 in Rushville, MO the son of the late Van Durham and Lettie (Blakley) Justus. He was an Army veteran serving during the Korean War. Earnest worked in the Government Storage Caves for twenty years retiring in 1989. He enjoyed coyote hunting and archeological digs discovering many different Indian artifacts.

Mr. Justus is survived by a brother; Johnny Justus, St. Joseph, Mo, two sisters; Helen Stehwien, Rushville, MO, Beverly Williams, St. Joseph, MO and many friends.

He was preceded in death by a sister Alice Schrader and a brother Earl Justus.

She was a member of the First Christian Church, former member of the Atchison County Extension Unit, Christian Women’s Fellowship, Church Choir, Thursday Morning Sewing Club and PTA. Norma enjoyed sewing and knitting but loved to travel and grow her Voo-Doo Lillie’s, African Violets, various other flowers and always raised a garden.

Norma married Lawrence E. Kuhn on April 5, 1944 at the First Christian Church in Atchison. Larry preceded her in death on November 24, 2005. Survivors include a son; Lawrence A. Kuhn, Atchison, three daughters; Sandra and John Bentley & Linda and Bill Mosteller, both of Casper, WY, Marjorie and Al Ross, Robinson, KS, two brothers; Lloyd Criss, Escondido, CA, Myles Criss, Corvallis, OR, 6 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Ralph was born March 4, 1927 in Atchison, the son of Lloyd C. and Edith (Shugart) Cave. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1945 and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After returning home, Ralph began working for the former Midwest Solvents Company (now MGP) . He retired from MGP in 1989 as a supervisor after 43 years. Ralph was an active member of the Atchison United Methodist Church, where he served on many church boards and attended the GMC Sunday School Class. Ralph was a 50 year member of the Atchison Masonic Lodge #158 and the Moila Shrine in St. Joseph, MO. He enjoyed attending the Young at Heart class at the Atchison First Christian Church; was an avid fisherman and bird watcher, and enjoyed traveling and computers.

Ralph and Betty Steele were united in marriage on July 15, 1951 in St. Joseph, MO. Betty survives of the home. Additional survivors include one daughter, Janet (Steve) Johnston of St. Joseph; one son, Kirk (Doris) Cave of Carrollton, TX; three granddaughters, Jill (Nick) McKay of Lillington, NC, Ashley (Adrian) Gray and Megan Johnston, both of St. Joseph.

Ralph’s parents, two brothers, and one sister preceded him in death.

Lester was born on July 31, 1925 in Atchison, KS the son of Charles Lester and Velda E. (Cox) Marlatt. He graduated from Atchison High School in 1943. Mr. Marlatt was a World War II U.S. Navy veteran having served in the South Pacific. He was a farmer and owned and operated for over 53 years the Marlatt Construction Company, Atchison, KS. Mr. Marlatt was a member of the First Christian Church, was a lifetime member of the Fleming-Jackson-Seever American Legion Post # 6 and the VFW Post # 1175, both of Atchison, KS. He was a member of the Elks Lodge, the LICA (Land Improvement Contractors of America) and served for many years on the Mt. Vernon Cemetery Board. Mr. Marlatt enjoyed working, going to equipment auctions and especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was married to Ruthanna Hazell on March 1, 1947 at the First Christian Church, Olathe, KS. Mrs. Marlatt survives of the home. Additional survivors include two sons, Tom (Susie) Marlatt, Atchison, KS, Steven (Patty) Marlatt, Atchison, KS, a daughter, Mrs. Shirley (Charles) Cline, Atchison, KS, a daughter-in-law, Karen (Marlatt)Hardesty, Peoria, IL, a brother, Roy Marlatt, Effingham, KS, a sister, Mary Jeanne Hinnen, Merriam, KS, eight grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Mary Jane Robinson was born on December 4, 1919 in Atchison, KS, the daughter of Dr. Charles W. and Elizabeth Jane “Bessie”(Morris) Robinson. She attended Washington grade school, and graduated from Atchison High School. She graduated from Kansas University with a degree in fine arts. She was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church, where she served as a Sunday School Teacher and on the Altar Guild. She was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority, and a 60 year member of the Chapter J, PEO Sisterhood. During World War II, Mrs. Smith was a volunteer for several service organizations. Mrs. Smith was a homemaker, and she enjoyed cooking, gardening and especially her family and grandchildren. She was dearly loved and cared for by a wide circle of family and friends.

She was married to Fritz Smith on November 14, 1945 in Atchison, KS. Fritz survives of the home. Additional survivors include a son, Charles R. and his wife Iris Smith, San Antonio, TX, two granddaughters, Ashley N. Smith , Washington, DC, and Caitlin H. Smith, San Antonio, TX, and several nieces and nephews. Her parents preceded her in death.

Margie worked as a sales clerk for a gift shop in Salina, Kansas before moving back to Atchison in 1982. She was a member of the First Christian Church, Atchison, KS, and was a 50 year member and Past Matron of the Martha Washington Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star. She was a member of the Issi Shrine, Salina, KS. She enjoyed sewing, embroidery and crocheting.

She was married to Ralph L. Church on May 9th, 1933 in Atchison, KS. Mr. Church survives of the home. Additional survivors include a brother-in-law, William T. Church, Amazonia, MO, and a number of nieces and nephews. Her parents, five brothers, and five sisters also preceded her in death.

Felix Sovin 87, Atchison, KS died Tuesday, February 17, 2009 at his home.

Mr. Sovin was born on April 9, 1921 in Philadelphia, PA, the son of Michael and Anna (Vinyiek) Sovin. Mr. Sovin was a decorated U.S. Navy sailor in World War II having stayed with the USS O’Brien after a Japanese destroyer sank it. A retired welder, Mr. Sovin had lived in Atchison for 52 years, he was a Catholic, and enjoyed reading and walking.

Felix was married to Dorothy Stiles in 1942, she preceded him in death on Sept. 6, 1991. Mike was born on March 31, 1954 in Cody, Wyoming, the son of Malin B. and Wanda (Lloyd) Coulter. He attended Atchison High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1972. Mike enjoyed restoring wood floors in his historical home. He loved fishing along the Missouri River and was an avid hunter of arrowheads. He was loved by family and a great many friends who will miss him deeply.

He was married to Sherri Turpin on May 24th, 1975 in Atchison, KS and were together for 36 years. Mrs. Coulter survives of the home. Additional survivors include two sons; Steve (Jamie) Coulter, Ft. Calhoun, NE, and Kevin Vaughn, of the home. Blanche Amelia Tull , 94, of Effingham, KS, passed away Saturday, February 14, 2009 at her son’s home in Effingham.

Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Friday, February 20, 2009 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison, with Rev. Stephen Lucas, officiating. Blanche Amelia Justice was born December 14, 1914 in Bethany, MO the daughter of Thomas and Margaret (Hoover) Justice. She attended schools in Muscotah, KS and had worked at Wilson’s Poultry, Horton Garment Factory, Electra Company, Atchison Leather Products and Heep’m Up Ice Cream Store, all of Atchison. Blanche enjoyed crocheting, sewing and working on word puzzles. She was a member of Faith Bible Fellowship Church, Atchison, the Farmington Home Demonstration Unit, 48’s at Effingham and the Effingham Senior Citizens Club.

Blanche and Joseph Benjamin Tull were married on September 4, 1935 in Hiawatha, KS. Joseph preceded Blanche in death on December 8, 1983. She was also preceded in death by her parents; one son, Joseph ‘Don’ Tull; four brothers, Arthur, John, Clifford and Everett Justice; four sisters, Nora Endicott, Gladys Justice, Bessie Peek and Vesper Hinz; one granddaughter, Elicia Collins; one grandson, Ronnie Tull; one great grandson, Lamar Gable; one great-great grandson, James Reynolds III.

Survivors include her two sons, Howard Tull and William ‘Bill’ (Lourdes) Tull, both of Effingham, KS, two daughters; Lois (David) Wilbourn of Effingham and Sue (Monte) Minard of Atchison, two sister-in-laws; Pauline Tull and Susie Justice; 47 grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren.

Josephine Irene Denton ,92, of Atchison, passed away Friday, February 13, 2009 at Vintage Park of Atchison.

Josephine was born March 18, 1916 in Doniphan County the daughter of the late George Gambetta and Lucy (Neiderhouser) Gerardy. She was a homemaker and later became the baking instructor at the N.E.K. Vo-Tech where she worked until she was 80. Mrs. Denton was a member of the United Methodist Church in Atchison and was involved in the AUMC Women’s Circles. Josephine was a past Grand Matron of the Eastern Star and member of the N.E.K. Quilters Guild and Atchison Hospital Auxiliary. She enjoyed quilting and was in numerous card groups.

Josephine married Floyd Denton November 19, 1937 in Topeka, KS; he preceded her in death August 30, 1976. Survivors include three sons; Harold and Barbara Denton, Las Cruces, NM, Roger and Judy Denton and Steve and Linda Denton, both of Atchison, daughter; Linda and Robert Baum, Westerly, RI, sister; Mary Ann Denton, Atchison, son-in-law John Butter, Lawrence, KS, 10 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Denton, on December 2, 2007 and five brothers.

Brig. Gen., Ret. Charles E. 'Bud' Williams, II, 89, of San Antonio, TX, passed away Friday, February 13, 2009 at a hospital in San Antonio.

Private family services will be held in San Antonio with burial at Ft. Sam Houston National Cemetery.

Bud was born November 14, 1919 in the Mt. Pleasant Community, south of Atchison, the son of Ed and Nellie (Hicks) Williams. Bud graduated from Atchison High School in 1937, attended Texas Tech University for two years before joining the US Air Force. Bud served during WW II, Korea, and Vietnam, retiring as a Brigadier General. Following WWII, Bud enlisted in the Air Force Reserves and attended and graduated from Auburn Poly Technical Institute and had worked for the Humble Oil Company in Texas before being recalled to military service in 1951.

Survivors include his wife, Harriette Williams of San Antonio; one son, C.E. Williams III of San Antonio; one daughter, Martha Ann Colman of Racine, WI; two sisters, Margaret Sewell, Lancaster, KS and Ruth Godbey of Topeka, KS; many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.

Bud was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Tom Williams; one sister, Louise Dunnuck.

Dorothy Elizabeth Moore, 94 of Atchison passed away Wednesday February 4, 2009 at the Atchison Medicalodge.

Dorothy was born December 14, 1914 in Atchison the daughter of Howard and Elizabeth (Watke) O’Neil. She worked at Vick’s Bakery for 6 years before becoming a housewife and homemaker for her family. Mrs. Moore was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church of Atchison and enjoyed being part of the different organizations there. She especially enjoyed her family.

Mrs. Moore married E.D. Moore on July 20, 1934 in Plattsburg, MO. He preceded her in death in 1972. Survivors include two sons Frank and Alice Moore, Olathe, KS, and John and Gail Moore, Sedona, AZ, one brother Roy and RoseMary O’Neil, Topeka, KS and two grandchildren Jason and Yolanda Moore, Seattle, WA, Shannon and Brien Schuman, Olathe, KS and two great grandchildren.

Mildred M. Fuhrman was born on October 29, 1907 in Huron, KS the daughter of Ernest C. and Anna Mae (Green) Fuhrman. Mildred graduated from Atchison County Community High School, attended the Emporia State Teachers College and received her degree in Education from the Mt. St. Scholastica College. She taught school for 19 years for the Brown County School District in the Elementary Schools, then at Atchison County School’s for 27 years and the last 14 years of teaching at the Effingham Elementary School. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, Atchison, KS a 50 year member of the Alpha Delta Kappa Sorority, a 50 year member of Martha Washington Chapter, Order of Eastern Star, and the Social Order of Beaucants, former member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, Friday Afternoon Club, and the Atchison Area Retired Teachers Association. She enjoyed raising flowers, gardening, reading, fancywork, and being around people.

She was first married to Sadrak “Sod” Larson on June 27, 1929; Mr. Larson preceded her in death on Feb. 13, 1958. She was later married to Elmer Smith on Feb. 27, 1975. Mr. Smith also preceded her in death on Nov. 2, 1976. Her parents,a foster sister, Mary Louise White, a niece Bonnie Jeanne Albers, a nephew, David Ernest Miller, and a step-son, Dwayne Smith, also preceded her in death. Survivors include her nieces Mary Ann Miller, Rushville, Mo, and Margaret Wiar, Arlington, TX, a nephew, William Miller, Manilla, IA, three step-daughters; Doris Wenger, Whiting, KS, Phyllis Holmes, Shawnee, KS, and Nina Howes, Independence, MO, seventeen great nieces and nephews, and three great great nephews.

Joseph K. Julo ,48 years of age, of Atchison, KS died Monday, February 2nd, 2009 as a result of an accident at work in Atchison, KS.

Joseph K. Julo was born on Sept. 24, 1960 in Kansas City, Mo, the son of Earl C. and Beatrice (Generaux) Julo. He graduated from Ruskin Heights High School, Kansas City, MO, and attended Maple Woods College. Mr. Julo after many years of retail management began his 11 year career at Golden Star Inc. where he served as Vice President of Manufacturing. He was currently serving on the Board of Directors for the Atchison Area Chamber of Commerce, where he was instrumental in the Annual Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament. Joe and his wife Michelle founded and ran the Atchison Clubs for Kids, an organization designed to inspire kids to learn valuable characteristics through the game of golf, for more information about Joe’s passion go to www.atchisonclubsforkids.org. Mr. Julo was formerly involved with the Big Brothers/Big Sisters, in Kansas City. He enjoyed golfing, leisure traveling, and time spent with family.

He was married to Michelle Richardson on May 3, 1997 in Las Vegas, NV. Mrs. Julo survives of the home in Atchison. She enjoyed gardening, canning, bowling, feeding her fish, collecting watering cans but most of all spending time with her family.

Linda married James Bilderback in 1976 in Atchison, KS, he survives of the home. Additional survivors include three sons; Ronnie (Sheila) Bilderback, Cummings, KS, Donnie (Yvonne) Bilderback, Bon Carbo, CO, Jeff (Cheryl) Bilderback, Belton, MO, two daughters; Bonnie (Mark) Bilderback-Vess, and Connie (Mike) Shelton, both of Alda, NE, four brothers; Tom George, Gary George, both of St. Joseph, MO, Larry George, Palm Bay, FL, Charlie George, Everest, KS, four sisters; Loree Christensen, Topeka, KS, Faye Baker, Horton, KS, Wilma Bierbaum, St. Joseph, MO, Mary Wood, Geneseo, KS, 13 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Virgil Carson ,96 of Atchison, KS, passed away Thursday, January 22, 2009 at the Atchison Medicalodge.

Virgil was born June 7, 1912 in Shannon, KS the son of Riley and Ella (Andre) Carson. Mr. Carson was a lifelong resident of the Atchison community; he farmed as a young man and later drove a gasoline transport for Holton Transport in Holton, KS. He also worked for Consumer Oil in Atchison, until he retired some 15 years ago. Virgil was a past member of Eagles and served as president for two terms. Virgil was a well known Kansas trapshooter and a member of the American Trapshooters Association and was inducted into the Kansas Trapshooters Association Hall of Fame in 2000.

Virgil Carson married Florence Russell on October 15, 1931 in Troy, KS. She preceded him in death in 1986, a daughter Dorothy Brading, and a sister Mildred Phillips also preceded him in death. Survivors include two sons Virgil Lee (Butch) and Jackie Carson, Tracy, CA Robert and Wanda Carson, Lee’s Summit, MO, a brother Harold (Corky) Carson, Council Grove, KS, 15 grandchildren, 41 great grand children and 21 great great grandchildren and a dear friend Jo Shell.

Charles Ray Tull, 76, of Meriden, KS, passed away, Tuesday, January 20, 2009 at the Jefferson County Geriatric Center in Winchester, KS.

Charles was born November 21, 1932 in Atchison, the son of Charles Forrest ‘Bud’ and Esther Sophie (Henderson) Tull. He attended grade school at Weinmann School Dist. #61 in rural Atchison and graduated from Atchison High School. Charles served in the local 137th Army National Guard for eight years. He had worked for Berry’s Hatchery in Atchison before working for eighteen years as an overhead crane operator for the former LFM steel foundry of Atchison. He then worked from 1968 to 1992 for Contel Telephone Company as a lineman/repairman and he also serviced the backup generators in Contel’s main office. Charles helped organize and was a charter member of the Lancaster Saddle Club; he was a past president of NEKSAG; Lions Club of Osage City, KS; and Contel Retirement Club. He enjoyed his dog, 'Duke' and riding horses.

Charles and Beverly Ann Cawley were married on October 1, 1954 in Atchison. She preceded him death in 1974. Charles later married Darlene Haupt on March 17, 1978 in Osage City, KS. She also preceded him in death on November 12, 1997. Additionally Charles was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Forrest Tull, and one sister, Reva Boger.

Survivors include three sons, Charles Linn (Sandra) Tull, Atchison, Terry (Debbie) Robinson, Lancaster, Tim (Dorothy) Robinson, Lansing, KS; two daughters, Tami (Mike) Griffin, Rushville, MO, Trudy (Robert) Scott, Atchison; five brothers, James Tull, David (Peggy) Tull, Dick (Lisa) Tull, John Tull, all of Atchison, and Ronnie (Susan) Tull, Rossville; two sisters, Anita Lively, Cummings, and Martha Franzel, Huron; eleven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Lucy worked as a nurse’s aid for the Tri-County Manor, Horton, KS. for 25 years. She enjoyed going to the casino, playing the slots, and especially her grandchildren.

She was married to Walter Hayes on Sept. 5, 1959. Mr. Hayes preceded her in death on Dec. 28, 1989. Her parents Harold Lawless, and Catherine Lawless –Greiveldinger, a son; Fred Hayes, 1986, a daughter: Sally Hayes, 2002, also preceded her in death. Dorothy Jean Lanter, 86, of Nortonville, KS passed away, Thursday, January 15, 2009 at the Village Villa Nursing Home in Nortonville.

She was a past member of the Nortonville United Methodist Church. Dorothy enjoyed playing the organ and the piano, and will be missed.

She is survived by one niece; Lorna Lanter of Oklahoma City, OK and good friend Dee Willyard, Winchester, KS.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents and brother, Keith Lanter.
