Obituary for Carl Henry Sternsdorff

Carl Henry Sternsdorff, 83, of Effingham, KS died Tuesday, August 30th, 2016, at the Atchison Senior Village.

Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Tuesday, Sept 6th, 2016, at the St. John’s Lutheran Church, Lancaster, KS with Sister Mary Arie officiating. Burial will follow in the Lancaster Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:00 PM on Monday, Sept. 5th, 2016 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home who is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions be given to St. John’s Lutheran Church and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Carl was born on March 30, 1933, in White Cloud, KS the son of Gerhard W. and Hulda M (Nixdorf) Sternsdorff. At the age of 3 his family moved to the farm NE of Effingham where he resided the rest of his years. He graduated from ACCHS in 1951. He started farming at an early age and continued all his life. Carl was a member of the St. John’s Lutheran Church where he had served on the church council for many, many years. He served on several COOP boards, was a member of Farm Bureau and the ACCHS Booster Club. His passion was always farming but he did enjoy music, playing cards and visiting about farming with whoever happened his way. While he enjoyed following his children in their activities, he especially loved following his grandchildren’s sporting and school activities. In later years, he enjoyed bingo and visiting at the Town and Country Senior Center and singing in the church choir.

Carl was married to LaVerne Larson on July 22, 1956 at Zion Lutheran Church, Everest, KS. Mrs. Sternsdorff preceded him in death on March 24, 2014. Survivors include a son, David (Fay) Sternsdorff, Effingham, KS, four daughters, Susan (Jay) Duncan, Effingham, KS, Peggy (Rick) Kooser, Basehor, KS, Linda Bottorff, Lancaster, KS, and Donna (Robert) Korff, Bitburg, Germany, eleven grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. His parents, Gerhard & Hulda, step-mother, Matilda (Gigstad) Sternsdorff, wife- LaVerne, son-in-law, Mark Bottorff, brother, Horst Sternsdorff, and sisters, Gladies Theurer, and Goldie McVey preceded him in death.
