Obituary for Sister Mary Cecile Ihle, OSB

Sister Mary Cecile Ihle, OSB, 91, a Benedictine sister of Mount St. Scholastica, Atchison, Kan., died Friday, May 6, 2016, at the monastery. The vigil service will be Monday, May 9, at 7 p.m. in the monastery chapel, and the Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated there Tuesday, May 10, at 10:30 a.m.

Sister Mary Cecile was the second of three children born to Bernard and Wilhemina (Minnie) Kleba Ihle in Paris, Ark. After graduating from St. Scholastica Academy in Fort Smith, Ark., she earned a music degree at Mount St. Scholastica College. She made her monastic profession in 1948 and then taught in parish schools in Nebraska, Kansas, Colorado and Iowa. After receiving a master’s degree in Spanish from the University of Kansas, she taught Spanish at Donnelly College in Kansas City, Kan., from 1963 to 1971. She pursued further studies at universities in Spain and Mexico and the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Later she served as a parish minister and musician at Our Lady of Guadalupe in Topeka, Holy Cross in Overland Park, Kan., and St. Pius X in Mission, Kan. From 1984 to 1994, she was assistant director of the Intensive English Program at Donnelly College. After returning to the monastery, she was a piano instructor at the Mount Conservatory of Music for several years.

Sister Mary Cecile was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Robert Ihle and her sister, Sister Eugenia Ihle, O.S.B. She is survived by a niece, Janice Roark of Linn Creek, Mo., cousins, and her monastic family. Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home (www.beckerdyer.com) is in charge of arrangements.
