W. “Jack” Higley, 84, of Atchison Kansas died Sunday, August 30, 2015 at his home following a lengthy illness.

Memorial services will be 10:30 AM on Friday, Sept. 4th, 2015 at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Ziegler officiating. Mr. Higley has been cremated and burial of his cremated remains will follow the services in the Evergreen Cemetery, Effingham, KS. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm on Thursday, Sept. 3rd at the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Christian Church or the Trinity Lutheran School Endowment Fund and may be sent in care of the funeral home. W. J (Jack) Higley was born on Nov. 20, 1930 in Farmington, Kansas the son of Clifton W. and Loie (Bowlin) Higley. Jack attended Farmington Grade School and graduated from ACCHS in 1949 and was an outstanding athlete, a star basketball and football player. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran serving in the Korean War, 1951-1955. He played basketball in the Air Force and also with several town teams before and after being discharged. Jack was manager of Lasater’s Men’s Store in downtown Atchison from 1956 until his retirement in 2001. He was a member of the First Christian Church, was a 60 year member of the American Legion Post # 6, and a Charter-Member of the Pineview Country Club. He had served on the Atchison Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. He was a huge KU Basketball fan, K-State Football, Royals, and Kansas City Chiefs fan. Jack was an antique collector with a collection of antique clocks, glassware, and furniture. He also was a lover of antique and classic cars including a pristine 1967 Camaro convertible.

He was married to Carol Dittemore in June 1952. They later divorced. He married Shirley Higgins Low in December 7, 1963. Mrs. Higley survives of the home. Additional survivors include a daughter, Jackie (Steve) Keck, North Kansas City, MO, son, Scott Higley, Atlanta, GA., step- son, Ross Low, Atchison, KS., and step-daughter, Kelley (Todd) Stillings, Atchison KS, a sister, Bobbie Outler, Loveland, CO, ten grandchildren, and eleven great grandchildren. His parents, an infant daughter, son, Mark Higley, step-daughter, Kathy Schneider, three brothers, Eston, Carl, and Donald Higley, and sister, Marjorie Botkin preceded him in death
