Obituary for Roger Darril Hammond

Roger Darril Hammond
Roger Darril Hammond, 1954-2015 It is with heavy hearts that family and friends report the sudden passing of Roger D. Hammond on the morning of Sunday, July 12, 2015.
A memorial service will be celebrated 11:00 AM Saturday, July 25, 2015 at United Methodist Church, Atchison, KS, with Rev. Nancy J Kollhoff officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Semper Fi Fund of Oceanside, California or Hillsdale College of Hillsdale, Michigan. Rock chalk Jayhawk. The Becker-Dyer-Stanton funeral home has been entrusted with arrangements. Online condolences may be left at www.beckerdyer.com.
Roger, the son of Marvin and Anne Hammond of Atchison, Kansas, was a true Jayhawk at heart. He studied Geology and Geochemistry at the University of Kansas and was an All-American javelin athlete, even participating in Olympic trials for the 1976 Olympics. After earning his masters' degree in Geochemistry, he moved to Houston and worked for Exxon for 31 years until his retirement. Roger's interests were widespread: he was an avid photographer, intrepid traveler, ardent sports fan, intense student of genealogy, and superb grill master. No one could cook a steak like Roger! Even more, he was a loving husband, father, son, and friend who will be greatly missed by those left behind.
Roger is survived by his devoted wife of 31 years, Rosemary Stein, his son Robert Kinkaid Hammond and his wife Christy Treat Hammond, and son Richard Warren Hammond, as well as his mother, sisters, Maryann Hammond and Susie Chapman, extended family and many friends.
