Hazel M. Nelson, 90 , Atchison, KS passed away Saturday, June 20, 2015 at the Atchison Medicalodge.

Funeral services will be 11:00 am Monday, June 22rd, 2015 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with Rev. Cynthia Meyer officiating. Burial will follow in the Muscotah Cemetery, Muscotah, KS. The family will receive friends from 4:00 to 6:00 pm Sunday, June 21, 2015 at Becker Dyer Stanton Funeral Home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Atchison United Methodist Church or Muscotah Cemetery Association and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Hazel was born Sept. 15, 1924 at Monrovia KS the daughter of Clarence and Bertha (Glenn) Patton. She attended Monrovia Grade School, and graduated from Effingham High School in 1942. She and Melvin Nelson were married on November 8, 1943 in Lawrence, KS. She worked at Blish-Mize Hardware after graduating. After being a stay at home mom for twelve years and working part time at Horton Garment Factory and John May Attorney at Law she returned to full time employment. Hazel worked at the Atchison County Clerk’s Office, the Atchison City Clerk’s Office, and later retired from the Multi-County Health-Atchison County Health Department. She was a member of the Atchison United Methodist Church and taught Sunday school for several years. She was a Cub Scout Den Mother, and member of the UMW Circle and a Life member of the V.F.W. Auxiliary. Hazel enjoyed Square Dancing, dancing and playing cards, gardening and canning. During her retirement she and Melvin worked part-time for Phalen’s Car Agency.

Survivors include her husband, Melvin Nelson, of the home, a son; Charlie (Beverly) Nelson, Peachtree City, GA, two sisters; Alice Mawdsley, Topeka, KS, and Esther Molt, Wichita, KS., two grandchildren; Michael (Amy) Nelson, Peachtree City, GA and Kathryn (Paul) Worley, Calhoun, GA, four great grandchildren; Laura and Matthew Worley, Calhoun, GA, George & Evelyn Nelson, Peachtree City, GA and several nieces and nephews.
