Thelma Irene Hoffman, 93 , formerly of Effingham, KS died Wednesday, November 26, 2014 at the Village Villa Nursing Home, Nortonville, KS.

Funeral services will be 10:30 AM on Tuesday, Dec. 2nd, 2014 at the Becker Chapel, in Effingham with Rev. Jeff Cochran officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery, Effingham. The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8: 30 pm on Monday, Dec. 1, 2014 at the Becker Chapel, 402 3rd St. Effingham, KS. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Evergreen Cemetery Effingham and may be sent in care of the funeral home. Condolences to the family may be left online at www.beckerdyer.com.

Thelma was born on Aug. 9, 1921 in Monrovia, Kansas the daughter of James Allen and Nellie Dunbar (Smith) Christie. She attended grade school in Effingham and graduated from Effingham High School in 1939. She received her Normal Teachers training from Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia, KS.
Mrs. Hoffman was a Elementary School teacher for many years in rural Atchison County and Jefferson Co. grade schools. She had also served as Principal for the Effingham Grade School. The Hoffman’s raised their family on a dairy farm near Effingham until 1986, when they retired. Thelma was a member of the Effingham Union Church and a member of the 48er’s Club. She enjoyed her family, cooking, and word search puzzles.

She was married to Mac LeRoy Hoffman on June 1, 1946 at the Monrovia Methodist Church. Mr. Hoffman preceded her in death on Oct. 7, 2009. Survivors include three sons; John (Laurie) Hoffman, Sioux Falls, SD., James Hoffman, and Jeffrey (Tana) Hoffman, of Effingham, KS, a daughter; Ann (Darrell) Christensen, Topeka, KS., thirteen grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Her parents, husband, Mac L. Hoffman, three brothers; Alvie, James Estel, and John Allen Christie, daughter-in-law Sandi (Pruitt) Hoffman and one grandson Benjamin Alan Hoffman preceded her in death.
