Obituary for Louise E Chew-Tharp (Weir)

Louise Elizabeth Chew- Tharp, 91, of Atchison KS died Wednesday, September 10, 2014 at the Atchison Hospital.
Funeral services will be 11:00 am on Monday, September 15th, 2014 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Burial will follow in the Sunset Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 9:30am until time of service on Monday at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Louise Chew Tharp Memorial Fund at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church or St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing Scholarship and may be sent in care of the Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home who is handling the arrangements. Louise E. Weir was born on February 19, 1923 in Beloit, KS, the daughter of Mason & Rae (Brown) Weir. She graduated from Beloit High School in 1941. She graduated from St. Luke’s Hospital School of Nursing in Kansas City in 1944. She was married to L. Milton Chew on October 3, 1944 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church. Mr. Chew preceded her in death on March 28, 1993. They moved to Atchison in Oct. 1947. Louise worked as a nurse at Atchison Hospital, Offices of Dr. W.L. Anderson and then for USD 409 as School Nurse for over 18 years. She was a member of the St. Mark’s Lutheran Church and served on the church Board and various church organizations, WELCA, Altar Guild, and church choir. She was a Charter member of the Atchison Coalition for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect, was a member of the Chapter J, PEO. She served on the Salvation Army Board, Community Concert Board, Chamber of Commerce Volunteer, and as a grandparent reading program for USD 409. Louise enjoyed spending time with family, traveling, sewing, playing golf and cards.

She was married to Vincent M. Tharp on July 25, 1998 at the United Methodist Church. Mr. Tharp survives of the home. Additional survivors include a daughter, Cynthia A. (Mike) Kersley, Atchison, KS., a son, Don (Sally) Chew, Lenexa, KS., two sisters, Marie Smith, San Antonio TX, and Arleta Liggett, Salina, KS., five grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Her parents, first husband, Milton Chew, brother, Bud Weir, and a sister, Mildred Gorton preceded her in death.
