Obituary for Joan C. Durkin (Hager)

Joan C. Durkin, 92, of Atchison, KS passed away Friday, March 1, 2013, at the Atchison Hospital.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 am on Thursday, March 7th, 2013 at St. Benedicts Church with Fr. Gerard Senecal, OSB as Celebrant. Burial will follow in the St. Louis Cemetery, Good Intent, KS. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 pm on Wednesday, March 6th, 2013 at Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home with a parish rosary recited at 8:00 pm. Joan was born November 3, 1920 in Good Intent, KS, the daughter of Frank and Anna (Held) Hager. She graduated from Mt. St. Scholastica before attending and graduating LPN School at Northeast Kansas Area Vo-Tech School. Joan had worked as a sewer at Saunders MFG, before working as Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) for Atchison Hospital and Cray Senior Manor Nursing Home retiring in Sept. 1985 after 22 years. She was a member of the VFW Post # 1175 Auxiliary, the Sacred Heart Quilting Club, the Monday Afternoon Card Club, St. Benedicts Altar Society, was a Eucharistic Minister and served as Secretary/Treasurer for Project Concern for several years. She enjoyed dancing, quilting, oil painting, playing the harmonica and cards, country western music at Branson, gardening and flowers.

Joan was married to Edgar Schneider on April 16, 1940. They were later divorced. Mr. Schneider preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 1985. She was later married to Joseph Durkin on December 7, 1973 in Atchison KS. Mr. Durkin preceded her in death on July 19, 2010. Survivors include five sons; James (Judy) Schneider, Atchison KS, Joseph (Norma) Schneider , Atchison, KS, Edgar (Debbie) Schneider, Atchison, KS, David (Connie) Schneider, Atchison, KS, Phillip (Debbie) Schneider, St. Louis, MO; three daughters, Aimee (Jim) Farrell, Ft. Collins, CO., Sr. Mary Schneider OSF, Richmond, Ontario, Canada, and Susan (Jeff) Sumpter Downs, KS; a sister; Mary Bowles, Kansas City, KS; three stepsons; Dwayne Durkin, Atchison, KS., Eddie Durkin, and Mike Durkin, both of Kansas City, Mo. ,two stepdaughters; Sharon Davis, Kansas City MO, and Mary Miles, Kentucky, twenty five grandchildren, four step grandchildren, twenty-nine great grandchildren and one great great grandchild and numerous step great grandchildren. Her parents, husband; Joseph Durkin, previous husband, Edgar Schneider, five brothers; Jack, Ted, Adolph, Joe and Frances Hager, and three sisters; Amelia Lollar, Helen Spinner, and Catherine Wheeler all preceded her in death.
